二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、There are many fascinating aspects of ant life, but none may be a more practical lesson for us than their gift for avoiding traffic jams.

A new research paper published in the journal eLife reveals how ants keep traffic flowing by changing their behavior to meet changing conditions. For their experiments, researchers from the University of Toulouse and the University of Arizona focused on Argentine ants that frequently move from one colony (聚居地) to another depending on where the food is.

Exploring the Argentine ants’ gift for fast travel, the researchers built bridges connecting their colonies. The bridges varied in width from a fifth to three-quarters of an inch. The colonies, too, were of different sizes, ranging from 400 to more than 25,00 ants. Then they sat back and monitored the traffic.

To their surprise, even when those narrower bridges reached near capacity (容量), there were no 20-ant pile-ups. Indeed, there was never a hold-up. Traffic remained steady because ants were able to adjust to the change of road conditions. At some point, when the bridges got really busy, ants moved not so much as individuals but rather like water flowing in an ever widening stream.

“When the number of ants on the bridge increased, ants seemed to be able to assess the situation and adjusted their speed accordingly to avoid making the traffic flow stop,” the authors note in a news release. “Moreover, ants kept themselves from entering a crowded path and made sure that the bridge was never too crowded to cross.” Argentine ants are extremely effective in getting to where they need to be in a hurry.

The lesson for humans? The traffic problem may lie in our inability to adjust our driving habits for the good of the whole. “Traffic jams are everywhere in human society where individuals are pursuing their own personal objectives,” the authors write. “In contrast, ants share a common goal: the survival of the colony, thus they are expected to act cooperatively to optimize (优化) food return.”

    B.The purpose of the experiments.

With that in mind, you can prepare for the most common questions.

Last but not least, you will be asked when you can start. This is up to your unique situation. 【5】 If you need more time, you should not only state that, but also explain why in order to show that you're still interested in the position, but have other reasons for additional time.

A.You'd better do your research in advance.

B.Generally, a phone interview is the first step in the hiring process.

  • 28、   I'm not impressed with VR, or at least that was my first impression as my first foray lasted about 60 minutes. At the end of that time, I decided that it wasn't for me and Is old my headset for more than I paid for it. Experienced users say that you soon forget as you get involved in the experience. I knew that I wouldn't be able to.

That was a few years ago and the headset used was the PSVR. Yes, I could have gone for one of the more upmarket headsets but, at the time, my PC wasn't fit for it. I thought that quick win with a PSVR could satisfy my curiosity, but I was wrong.

Roll on to 2019, and with the appearance of a lot of new headsets, I decided that, maybe, it was time to try VR again. I chose to use the Bigscreen app, designed for watching movies as if you were at the cinema. What was interesting for me was not to see what the actual quality was like but, importantly, what kind of experience you could have. Yes, for someone who doesn't always like the movie-going experience, this could have turned out to be the best of both worlds. I didn't have to spend money on expensive snacks and parking and I didn't have to put up with bad smells.

I have to say that the whole VR experience has improved quite a bit. Yes, things have improved, but it's not perfect. In fact, I don't think we've reached the "good enough" stage yet. As for other VR apps, after seeing Minority Report some years ago, I told a well-known editor that cutting in VR was going to be possible. He just looked at me with a look that said, 'Never gonna happen" Well, the time has come, and you can actually do this now.

VR isn't for everyone, I understand, but it can be a choice for some. I'd like to think will that the next generation of headsets improve some of the problems that we're still seeing.

1What was the author's PSVR experience a few years ago?

A.He found it let him down. B.He wasted a lot of money on it.

C.He felt the headset uncomfortable. D.He quickly got involved in it.

2Why did the author choose the Bigscreenapp?

A.He was not a film lover. B.He could have snacks at home.

C.He didn't have to pay for the app. D.He didn't like to go to the cinema.

3What does the author think of his 2019 VR experience?

A.It is perfect. B.It is good enough in his eyes.

C.It has lived up to his expectations. D.It has achieved some improvements.

4What was the author's attitude towards the future of VR?

    A.Uninterested. B.Uncertain. C.Doubtful. D.Hopeful.

  • 29、Pharrell Williams takes a breath and considers how the past years have developed for him: ten Grammy Awards and a number of hit singles including a song that has caused countless fans to express how they are “happy”.

And the key, says the 43yearold known simply as Pharrell, has been taking advantage of audiences' (听众的) need for heartfelt personal stories.

“I think we've entered a new singersongwriter time” said the American singer and producer. “People want a story. They want a story they can connect to. It's not about what you have or what you don't have; it's more about your journey and your viewpoint that's important to people.”

Pharrell  said he noticed  a  change  in audiences' tastes over the past year in particular with the sudden success of his song Happy, which received little fanfare upon its release but has turned into an international hit. Countless videos populate sites like YouTube with people from Portugal and China to Abu Dhabi and Iran singing and dancing along to the song.

After seeing how far his song traveled, the singer broke down in tears during a televised interview with the famous talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

“It's just encouraging to people who have something to say, something to express” he said.

The success has made Pharrell realize that people are searching for personal and emotional links (情感纽带), perhaps as a means of getting away from the modern technological world we're living in today.

“People want to feel. There's too much thinking to deal with” the singer said. “We're different from what we were 15 years ago, The only thing we have left that reminds (提醒) us that we are humans is feeling. It' s the most important thing ever.”

    B. It became popular overnight.

    C. It changed audiences' tastes in music.

3How did Pharrell feel about the success of his song?

    A. It was caused by good luck.

    B. It was within his expectations.

    C. It gave him hope and confidence.

    D. It prevented him giving up making music.

4Why do people want to be connected to others emotionally?
