二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   The Independent Project at the Monument Mountain Regional High School in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, is attracting huge interest in the education field. The program is a new concept that has developed a wide variety of students’ abilities and excited their interest in education and self-directed learning. They are a group of students that, instead of being educated through the normal school courses, have created their own subjects and project-based interactive learning.

The students are almost completely independent. They choose a goal that they want to achieve and work on for the whole year. These goals have included some impressive attempts such as writing a novel, writing a play, learning the piano and more. Along with these larger attempts, the students meet every day to ask questions about other subjects like natural sciences, social sciences, etc. Although most of them say that they don’t like math, they did eventually develop an interest in math through this independent learning technique.

The education program, which has attracted a huge variety of students, allows the students to learn and develop research skills and questioning techniques and allows them to truly be interested in the subjects they are diving into. They also teach each other what they have learned, which allows them to develop different ways of presenting and gathering material that they have researched.

I wish that I could have participated in such a project during my high school career, like writing a novel. I am currently studying English as well as education to pursue a teaching degree. I would love to adapt independent driven projects into a classroom in the future.

This project also raises some significant questions. Do we need to rethink the structure of the education system itself? Are too many students being simply fed through a conveyor belt(传送带) that we blindly see as working toward their education? I think that the education system needs some improvements, and different learning styles need to be addressed immediately.

Individual differences in learning are huge keys to the functioning of a classroom. This project takes the idea to a whole new level. This is an extremely important event in the development of the American education system and I think everyone needs to keep an eye out for more programs like this.

【1】What can we learn about the Independent Project?

A.There is little involvement from teachers.

B.Normal school courses are also available.

C.The students meet every week to discuss their courses.

【2】By saying the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5, what does the author seems to imply ?

A.teachers are really important for students.

B.different learning styles should be encouraged.

C.the project works like a conveyor belt of information.

D.knowledge can be better conveyed in smaller classes.

    A.Suppotive.

    B.Cautious.

    A.The benefits of interactive learning.

    B.Individual differences in learning.

    C.A group of independent students.

    D.An unusual education program.

  • 27、While looking for local restaurants to enjoy when I was camping at Chadron State Park (CSP), NE, I found the interesting sounding “Just Love—Coffee Cafe”.

The coffee shop began with a couple, who, after spending too much while taking another two children without parents from Ethiopia into their family, began a cafe business, with part of the money they made from it going to support their big family. I enjoyed the good atmosphere, the attractive menu and a nice chat with the owner about the Cafe knowledge.

I decided to buy a gift card for the lifeguards at the CSP pool, where we went every day and even saw a rescue with our own eyes! And I also wanted to buy one for the hostess at the Trading Center, who cheerfully agreed to allow me to set up a paper art workshop next time we camped there.

While waiting in line to buy the gift cards, I had a brief conversation with a young mom who was at a point in life where everything seemed a struggle, but she was confident. “Her father,” she said, smiling at her daughter in the baby carriage, “is away at barber school in Arizona. It’s the fastest way of getting his certificate (证书). He’s Native American and his strong point is in braiding (编辫子). I work nights and have a babysitter for her during my work time, so I’m always tired. However, I’m sure that I can get over the hard days as soon as possible!”

Following that conversation, I bought another gift card and gave it to the hard-working young mom. And when I did, she reached out to hug me, with tears of surprise. As we hugged, I said softly, “Things will get better. Hold on...”

【1】Why did the couple open the coffee shop?

    A.To serve foreigners.

    B.To become wealthy.

C.To take in more poor children.

    B.To teach traditional skills.

C.To set up his own business.

    D.To make a living.

【4】What was the young mother’s attitude towards her present life?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Uncaring.

    C.Hopeful.

    D.Worried.

  • 28、I look in the mirror, and I'm not happy with what I see. I don't have a "perfect" face. I look in the magazines and all I see are girls with fair hair, blue eyes, and, of course, a pretty little nose. They're on the outside of the buses that I take home, the television programs I watch, and the billboards(广告牌) I walk under. Almost every advertisement I see shows this human physical "perfection". These billboards not only tell me what to drink, but also how to look.

Our society place more importance on a person's physical beauty, rather than their ability, honesty and character. We have influenced women to go through painful surgeries(手术)and starve themselves to become this society built physical model. To be a beautiful woman in the 21st century doesn't mean that you are a brilliant doctor or caring mother. It means you have the perfect jaw, eyes and lips. It means that you can be six feet tall and weigh one hundred and ten pounds.

But what about the women who are starting to leave their youth? Instead of looking at aging as a sign of wisdom, we try to prevent the aging process(过程). It's a kind of funny thing to want to look eighteen when fifty. Fifty is a relaxed age, when you can step back and look at all you've achieved (successfully complete something). It is when your hard work pays off. Unfortunately, our society just sees you as “old”. To stop the aging process, women buy wrinkle(皱纹) creams, do eye lifts and face lifts. They spend thousands of dollars to win the hopeless battle against age.

I remember when I was about thirteen years old and going through teens, I had oily hair, and a half developed body. I hated the way I looked. I used to cry to my mother all the time, but she would just laugh and tell me that "you don't want anyone to like your appearance. It's your heart that is important, because beauty fades.(消逝)" I knew that she was right. If you work on your heart enough, people will start to see the beauty in you, which lasts and remains on even after you die.

【1】The main idea of the first paragraph is that ________.

    A. the author doesn't have a perfect face

    B. women have to look beautiful

    C. photos of beautiful girls can be seen everywhere

    D. there are too many beauties in daily life

2】What's the author's attitude towards being "old"?

    A. It's a pity that people have to get old.

    B. It's a fruitful and wise time.

    C. It's stupid to try to stay young.

    D. It's a pity that society looks down upon the old.

3】It is ________ that regard(s) the physical beauty as more important.

    A. women themselves      B. the author's parents

    C. newspapers and magazines    D. society

4】What's the author's opinion about beauty?

    A. The author doesn't like the beauties our society values.

    B. It is not important whether a person looks beautiful or not.

    C. It is a person's heart and inner qualities that are important rather than the physical beauty.

    D. The author feels appearance is important to a person.

  • 29、Teenagers in America know that they’ll possibly need technical skills to find good jobs, but a new survey reveals that interest in technology-related careers may be decreasing.

The percentage of boys aged 13 to 17 who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math or STEM careers dropped from 36 percent in 2017 to 24 percent this year, according to a survey by Junior Achievement USA. The amount of girls interested in STEM careers stayed unchanged.

But the 1, 000 survey participants still named technology as one of two key skills that will be necessary to prepare them for their future careers.

“Kids don’t understand how technology can be applied to careers in addition to computers, and maybe robotics,” said Tammera L. Holmes, president of aviation consulting firm AeroStar Consulting (航空咨询公司). “That’s all they know, so they can’t really translate that interest to career pathways.”

When Holmes was in high school, her mom sent her to an event that featured (以……为专题) the pilots from World War Ⅱ. One of the pilots took her for a ride and let her take the wheel. “Immediately that was the career for me,” she said.

Women remain outnumbered (超过) by men in fields like technology. For people working to increase the number of women in these areas, the lack of growth in girls, interest in STEM careers is concerning.

Teenage girls are more interested than their male classmates in running after careers in which they can help others, said Ed Grocholski from Junior Achievement. Even with all the programs aimed at increasing girls’ interest in STEM, “I don’t think we really talk that much about how we improve people’s lives through STEM,” Grocholski said.

Society needs to do better at making those connections for kids, said Katherine Latham, founder of an engineering firm. She used civil engineering as an example of a career that will continue to be important.

However, the fact that students know they will need tech skills in their future careers is encouraging.

The second skill they said they need is relationship-building.

“That’s going to be the new type of engineers,” Latham said.

【1】What is the passage mainly about?

A.Some successful examples of kids choosing tech careers.

B.Reasons behind teenagers’ decreasing interest in tech careers.

C.The difference in choice of jobs between boys and girls in America.

D.The popularity of tech careers among kids and its reasons.

【2】What is the reason behind kids’ losing interest in tech careers?

A.They see tech careers as boring.

B.They find tech skills less important than before.

C.They don’t think tech careers can bring rewards.

D.They can’t connect their tech interest with future careers.

【3】What can we learn from Grocholski’s words?

A.STEM careers have nothing to do with people’s lives.

B.Teenage girls are interested in running after STEM careers.

C.The relationship between STEM careers and the improvement of people’s lives isn’t explained enough.

D.Teenagers don’t know how to improve people’s lives through STEM.

【4】What aroused Holmes’ interest in her career?

    A.A summer camp for pilots.

    B.Her parents’ wish for her.

C.A report about the life of pilots.

D.Her flight experience with a pilot.

  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was evening and time for my little sister and me to take our showers and get ready for bed. As I passed the mirror in the bathroom, there it was—a wild hair right in the middle of my forehead, threatening to be the beginning of the third eyebrow (眉毛). I went into the shower trying to think of a solution, and then I spotted a razor (剃刀). I took it and started trying to shave off the savage hair.

Usually I would trust my mom’s advice about what to do in this sort of situation, but this was just too complicated for her—or so I thought. Well, while I was shaving that hair off, the razor slipped, and I ended up shaving off half my eyebrow! Then I did what any girl would do in this situation—I tried to even them out. When I was finished, I looked in the mirror. It was a disaster! I tried to figure out if there was anyway to fix this mess. Thankfully, I found a way to hide my mistake. I put my bangs over my eyebrows. It worked perfectly!

Just then my parents called me to come and say good night. Nobody noticed my eyebrows, but they did notice my little sister’s eyebrows! It turned out that while I was fighting the stray hair, she had found another razor in the drawer and began copying me. Now her eyebrows were completely missing! My parents were very confused until they finally noticed that half my eyebrows were gone as well. After a lot of questioning, I broke down and confessed (坦白) to what had happened.

I thought that my parents would be mad at me until my mom took me aside to tell me that when she was a pre-teen, she had done a similar thing. In her case, it was her underarms. While away at camp on a swimming day, she was extremely embarrassed because she had some long hairs in her armpits (腋窝).
