  • 26、There have been few positives during the Covid pandemic but British academics may have spotted one: People look more attractive in protective masks.

Researchers at Cardiff University were surprised to find that both men and women were judged to look better with a face mask covering the lower half of their faces. They also discovered that a face covered with a disposable-type surgical mask (一次性外科罩) was likely to be considered the most attractive, which may be a blow for producers of fashionable coverings and the environment.

Dr Michael Lewis, a reader from Cardiff University’s school of psychology, said research before the pandemic had found that medical face masks reduced attractiveness because they were associated with illness.

“We wanted to test whether this had changed since face coverings became popular,” he said.

“Our study suggests faces are considered most attractive when covered by medical face masks. This may be because we’re used to healthcare workers wearing blue masks and now we associate these with people in caring or medical professions. At a time when we feel weak, we may find the wearing of medical masks secure and so feel more positive towards the wearer.”

The first part of the research was carried out in February 2021 by which time the British population had become used to wearing masks in some places. Forty-three women were asked to rate on a scale of 1 to 10 --the attractiveness of images of male faces without a mask, wearing a plain cloth mask, a blue medical face mask, and holding a plain black book covering the area a face mask would hide.

The participants said those wearing a cloth mask were much more attractive than the ones with no masks or whose faces were partly covered by the book. But the surgical mask- which was just a normal, disposable kind-made the wearer look even better. Lewis said it was also possible that masks made people more attractive because they directed attention to the eyes. He said other studies had found that covering the left or right half of a face also made people look more attractive, partly because the brain fills in the missing gaps and beautify the overall effect.

The results of the first study has been published in the journal Cognitive Research: Principles and Implications. A second study has been carried out, in which a group of men look at women in masks; it has yet to be published but Lewis said the results were probably the same.

【1】Why were protective masks not welcome before the pandemic?

A.Because it reminded others of diseases.

    B.Because the masks wore uncomfortably.

C.Because only doctors had the right to wear them.

D.Because some wearers couldn’t take a smooth breath.

    A.Those with cloth masks.

    B.Those with surgical masks.

D.It’s recognized that masks can hide facial imperfections.

  • 27、Everyone wants to be regarded as a reliable person. Being reliable is really necessary when it comes to maintaining(维系)friendships and doing well at work. Read on for ways to be more reliable.

Try not to over-promise. 【1】But it could lead to bad results when you take on too much, and then can't keep it. So next time you are asked to do something, weigh the pros and cons (权衡利弊)and take time before you respond.

【2】If you’re uncertain about hanging out with someone, say so sooner rather than later. Nothing is worse than showing up to meet someone, only to put them off five minutes before they should arrive. Don't be this person. Offer an apology, and cancel the plan well ahead of time.

Don't demand credit. People who demand praise for the things they've done often lose the goodwill that comes from the help they provided. 【3】So there's no need to post it on Facebook or go fishing for praise.

Respect everyone's time. The biggest rule of reliability is to have respect for other people's time. If you tell someone you can meet at a certain time, you've made a promise. 【4】When you're late, you're wasting other people's time at will. And you may therefore give others an impression of being untrustworthy!

Be as truthful as possible. If you failed to finish the work on time, say so. If you don't understand the task, be honest about it. Don't hide or bend the truth and avoid spreading unreliable information. 【5】

    A.Change plans in advance.

B.Hang out with other reliable people.

C.It' s impolite to say "no" to a friend's request.

D.Your friends and co-workers know that you helped out.

E.Being on time shows others that you are a person of your word.

F.Saying "yes” to everything seems to be agreeable and thoughtful.

G.Telling the truth will let people come to see you as a person of reliability.

  • 28、Hospitals employ many therapeutic (治疗的) methods,   such as medication (药物治疗),   massage (按摩) therapy and music therapy. And music therapy is growing in popularity.

Sandra Siedliecki is a Senior Scientist at the Nursing Institute of Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. She says music is a low-cost treatment. And she says scientists have done a lot of research on music’s effect on pain. Dr. Marian Good did a lot of studies looking at surgery (外科) patients and the use of music. In her studies,   patients just listened to relaxing music. Dr. Good found that her surgery patients took fewer painkillers after they listened to music. Music had a good effect on short-term pain. However,   chronic pain,   the kind that recurs (复发) continually,   changed little under the effect of music.

Dr. Linda Chlan was studying something different. She was not interested in patients’ pain,   but instead,   their anxiety. She spent a lot of time with people who were in the hospital because their anxiety was so great that they couldn’t breathe. People with this condition often have to use breathing machines. Dr. Chlan said that the machines sometimes did little to improve their condition. Sometimes they even made things worse. The patients would become more anxious. Dr. Chlan let nurses tell patients that music was a good choice to make them feel better. They also placed signs near the patients’ beds—Listen to your music at least twice a day. The people who listened to music had a reduction (减少) in the amount of medication they received. In addition,   their anxiety reduced by about 36 percent.

Both doctors had similar explanations for why music was so helpful. Music can be a very powerful distracter (干扰) in the brain when we’re listening to music that is pleasing and then it interrupts stressful thoughts.

【1】Dr. Marian Good’s studies show that music therapy .

    A.can help patients recover fast

B.cannot take the place of medication

C.doesn’t work well on all patients

D.is cheaper than massage therapy and medication

【2】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Dr. Good and Dr. Chlan didn’t agree with each other on music’s effect.

B.Patients will forget their illnesses completely while listening to music.

C.Patients with great anxiety would not recover after taking medicine.

D.Listening to enjoyable music is a good way to relieve anxiety.

【3】What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.The brain.

    B.Music.

    C.Stress.

    D.Medicine.

【4】What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?

A.To show that music therapy is useful.

B.To encourage all patients to listen to music.

C.To tell how to reduce pain and anxiety.

D.To explain how music reduces pain and anxiety.

  • 29、Some American parents might think their children need better educations to compete with China and other countries. But how much do the parents themselves need to change? A new book called" Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother" by Amy Chua has caused a debate about cultural differences in parenting. Ms. Chua is a professor at the Yale Law School in New Haven, Connecticut, and the mother of two daughters. She was raised in the American Midwest by immigrant Chinese parents.

In the Chinese culture, the tiger represents strength and power. In her book, Ms. Chua writes about how she demanded excellence from her daughters. Ms. Chua told NBC television that she had a clear list of what her daughters, Sophia and Louisa, were not permitted to do.

Many people have criticized Amy Chua. She also admits that her husband, who is not Chinese, sometimes disagreed with her parenting style. But she says that was the way her parents raised her and her three sisters.

Ms. Chua makes fun of her own style of parenting. She says she eased some of the pressure after her younger daughter rebelled and shouted "I hate my life! I hate you! " But she also says American parents often have low expectations of their children's abilities. “One of the biggest differences I see between Western and Chinese parents is that Chinese parents assume strength rather than fragility. ”

Stacy DeBroff, who has written four books on parenting, says, "The stirring of this intense debate has to do with what it means to be a successful parent and what it means to be a successful child. "Ms. DeBroff says Amy Chua's parenting style is not limited to Chinese families. She says it represents a traditional way of parenting among immigrants seeking a better future for their children. But she also sees a risk. When children have no time to be social or to follow their own interests, they might not develop other skills that they need to succeed in life. Stacy DeBroff advises parents to develop their own style of parenting and not just repeat the way they were raised.

【1】Which of the following might be on the list of what Amy Chua’s daughters are no permitted to do ?

    A.Taking an extra course.

    B.Getting A’s in exams

    C.Getting up on schedule.
