The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe—C.S.Lewis

As a kid I read the book, watched the film and listened to the tape.I really couldn't get enough of the book. It's an exciting story set in a magical land called Narnia. When you're reading it,you'll feel like you're really there. You'll get caught up in the adventures of the four children and the characters they meet.I can't rate it highly enough.

  • 27、Breakdancing is close to becoming an Olympic sport after the organizers of the 2024 Paris Olympics announced that they would recommend four additional sports, including newcomer breakdancing and the other three sports: surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing to the Games in 2024.

“Breakdancing is a fantastic opportunity to be really in line with the story that Paris 2024 wants to tell. We want those Games in connection with creativity, connected with the youth, more urban, more out of the stadiums. We look forward to working with breakdancing to have a new experience.” Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet told the media.

Breakdancing is a sport played anytime and anywhere in cities and other environments. It has no previous appearance at the Summer Olympic Games, but was included at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in 2018.

“Right from the beginning, our aim was to offer Games that would have an effect and a part of surprise. This is why we have chosen to present the IOC (International Olympic Committee) with four sports that are as creative, attracting the youth and completely in line with our vision (愿景). We are sure that breakdancing, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing will contribute to strengthening our project,” Estanguet added.

The organizers try to follow three key rules in hosting the Games: sustainable (可持续的) and socially-responsible Games with the IOC’s new standards; Games in keeping with the times and inspiring new audiences and attracting young people; Games reflecting the identity (特征) of Paris 2024,which is brilliant, culture-related, engaging and accessible.

Under the new IOC rules, Olympic host cities can select sports and recommend them to be included in those Games if they are popular in that country and add to the Games’ attraction. But that still needs to agreed by the IOC, which is expected to make the final decision after the Tokyo Olympics.

  • 28、In some places, people collect honey from wild bees. This is common in many parts of the world, especially South Asia. Honey hunting is a local tradition in southern India but it is not an undemanding job. The bees in southern India can grow up to the size of the smallest adult human finger. And these giant honey bees build their hives (蜂窝) on the sides of mountains!

It takes many years for a honey hunter to learn to collect honey from these hives. From a young age the honey hunter learns everything about bees. He practices climbing hundreds of meters above the ground. Before the honey season, the honey hunter prepares for many days.

When the day of the honey hunt season arrives, the honey hunter goes to the edge of the mountain early in the morning. He climbs down with a rope and lights some dry branches (树枝) on fire. The smoke makes the bees leave the hive. With the bees flying around the honey hunter, he uses a long sharp stick to gently get pieces of the wax (蜜蜡) filled with honey. He then takes them back to the village in a box made of bamboo.

Usually the hunter takes some honey and leaves some of the hive on the mountainside. He does not take the part of the hive with the baby bees in it since he does not want to destroy the home of the bees. When the honey hunter returns, the village celebrates!

“They have been hunting honey in this way for more than 2,000 years. Honey was and still is an important part of their diet, cooking and medicine,” Simone Gie from the organization Slow Food International, said.

  • 29、Sharks are often regarded as cruel animals, hunting alone in the deep sea. But that is increasingly out of step with what scientists are learning about them. Instead, they say, sharks are social creatures who return day after day to a group of the same sharks.

Yannis Papastamatiou’s team studied the sharks living in’ the waters off Palmyra Atoll in the central Pacific Ocean. They put small location transmitters (发射机) on 41 sharks, which allowed them to record the animals’ movements.

After recording the sharks for four years, the researchers found that the same groupings of sharks — from a couple up to as many as 20 — returned to the same parts of the reef (礁) over and over again. They also found that some of the groups stuck together during the study period — longer than earlier studies have observed.

They point out that the sharks don’t cooperatively hunt, but say that as long as the group isn’t too large — which will raise competition — socializing appears to benefit the sharks. And that may be one of the things that leads to sociality in the species.

David Shiffman, who studies shark protection, says he was surprised to learn the sharks stuck together for so long. “Sharks are smart creatures,” Shiffman says. “In addition to knowing where to find food by watching others, some species of sharks can also learn to solve simple puzzles, just by watching other sharks solve them. Given their intelligence and social abilities, perhaps it’s time to drop misunderstandings about sharks.”

As for what to call a group of sharks, the name causes fear: it’s known as a shiver of sharks.

【1】What is the main finding of Papastamatiou’s research?

    A.Sharks cooperate to hunt.

    B.Sharks form social groups.

    C.Sharks hunt alone regularly.

D.Sharks take advantage of the reef.

【2】What did the researchers use to observe the sharks?

    A.Group technology.

    B.Sensing technology.

    C.Positioning technology.

    D.Information technology.

【3】How do the sharks benefit from their group members according to Shiffman?

    A.By following their example.

B.By sharing food with each other.

    C.By solving problems through cooperation.

D.By keeping themselves strong through competition.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Sharks Are Not Cruel Animals

B.See A Shiver of Sharks? Calm Down

C.Everyone Needs Friends — Even Sharks

D.Large Groups or Small Groups: Which Is Better?
