    Guide to Film Festivals

    Cannes Film Festival

    Cannes, France in May

    Top prize: Palme d`Or

History: The first Cannes Film Festival was scheduled to take place in September 1939, but the outbreak of World War II forced its cancellation. It didn’t open for the first time until after the war. The Palme d`Or prize was introduced in 1955. The festival became established during the 1960s and is now known as the world’s most important film festival.

Did you know? About 20 feature films compete each year for the Palme d`Or. Previous winners include Michael Moore and Quentin Tarantino. Unlike the Oscars, the top prize is frequently shared between two films. Famous films that have won the Palme d`Or include Apocalypse Now, Taxi Driver: La Dolce Vita and The Third Man. The festival attracts more than 40,000 people every year.

    Venice Film Festival

    Venice, Italy in August/September

    Top prize: Golden Lion

History: The Venice Film Festival is the oldest film festival. The film festival started in 1932 and it attracted over 25,000 people. The festival did not appear again until 1934, when there was a competition between 19 countries. The festival was held three times during World War II and has been held almost every year since then.

Did you know? Films at the 61st Venice Film Festival in 2004 were nominated for 16 awards at the Oscars—the highest ever for the festival. These films included Vera Drake, Shark Tale, Collateral and Finding Never land.

    The London Film Festival

    London, UK in October/November

    Top prize: Non-competitive

History: The London Film Festival started in 1956 when a group of film critics led by the famous Dilys Powell, the film critic for The Sunday Times, got together over dinner. They discussed the festivals at Cannes and Venice, and they agreed that London needed one, too. They wanted to give people the opportunity to see films from around the world that were not being shown in the cinemas. The first festival showed 20 films at the National Film Theatre on the South Bank.

Did you know? The festival is one of Europe’s largest public film events, screening about 280 films from 60 countries. Although it is non-competitive, the British Film Institute awards the Sutherland Trophy to the most original and imaginative feature film screened at the festival.

  • 27、I’ve been reading 100 books per year on average during the past decade. So obviously I get the usual question of what books I recommend. Well, here’re my top 4 favorite books of all times, which influenced me into who I am today.

    1. Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. One of the biggest bestsellers of all times. Napoleon Hill spent two decades analyzing over 500 successful men like Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and John D. Rockefeller to discover how they did it. The result of Hill’s research is in Think & Grow Rich—13 steps to achieve your goal, whatever it is. All other self-help books are just copies of Hill’s book first published in 1937.

    2. Psychocybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. Another bestseller and the only self-help book you’ll need next to Think Grow Rich. Maxwell Maltz was a plastic surgeon who was amazed that some patients still felt ugly after surgery (外科手术). That’s when he discovered they also needed reconstruction work inside—their “self-image”. Everything about how to use the “mind-body” connection to achieve your goals, and how to feel confident about your body is inside this book.

    3. Talent is Overrated by Geoff Clovin. This book drives the point home that success in any field is not determined by genetics or talent but deliberate practice. Colvin uses examples from world class achievers like Tiger Woods, Jack Welch, Warren Buffet, Mozart to prove that they all got theirs through years of practice—the 10,000 hours rule. You’ll reexamine your beliefs about what it takes to succeed and supercharge your motivation after reading Colvin’s book.

    4. Mastery by George Leonard. This book also stresses that practice is the secret of success in anything. Leonard explains that mastership never ends—you will never have perfect technique and be able to stop. Instead you’ll keep learning, improving, and hitting plateaus. The big point in Mastery is that plateaus are vital for improving your skills and that you therefore must start enjoying them instead of getting impatient or quitting like most guys do.

【1】What is the book Think & Grow Rich mainly about?

    A.Successful men’s stories

    B.A research on being rich

    C.An analysis of famous people.

    D.Instruction on how to succeed

【2】What do Talent is Overrated and Mastery both mention?

A.The steps to achieving the goal

    B.World class achievers’ achievement

C.Practice’s key role in achieving success

D.Genetics and talent’s influence on being successful.

【3】Which book can best explain the saying “Live and learn”?

    A.Think& Grow Rich

    B.Psychocybernetics

    C.Talent is Overrated

    D.Mastery

  • 28、   San Francisco has its cable cars. Seattle has its Space Needle. And, Longview has its squirrel bridge. The bridge, which has attracted international attention, is now a local landmark(地标).

The Nutty Narrows Bridge was built in 1963 by a local builder, Amos Peters, to give squirrels a way to cross the busy road without getting flattened by passing cars.

The original bridge was built over Olympia Way on the west edge of the library grounds. Before the bridge was built, squirrels had to avoid traffic to and from the Park Plaza office building where office staff put out a nutty feast for the squirrels. Many times, Peters and others who worked in and near Park Plaza witnessed squirrels being run over.

One day Peters found a dead squirrel with a nut still in its mouth, and that day’s coffee break discussion turned into squirrel safety. The group of businessmen cooked up the squirrel bridge idea and formed a committee to ask the blessing of the City Council(市政会).The Council approved(赞同), and Councilwoman Bess LaRiviere named the bridge “Nutty Narrows.”

After architects designed the bridge, Amos Peters and Bill Hutch started Construction, They built the 60-foot bridge from aluminum and lengths of fire hose(消防水带). It cost 1,000.

It didn’t take long before reports of squirrels using the bridge started. Squirrels were even seen guiding their young and teaching them the ropes. The story was picked up by the media, and Nutty Narrows became known in newspapers all over the world.

In 1983, after 20 years of use, Peters took down the worn-out bridge. Repairs were made and crosspieces were replaced. The faded sign was repainted and in July 1983, hundreds of animal lovers attended the completion ceremony of the new bridge.

Peters died in 1984, and a ten-foot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge in memory of its builder and his devotion to the project.

  • 29、   Americans wear black for mourning (哀悼) while Chinese wear white. Westerners think of dragons as monsters. Chinese honor them as symbols of God. Chinese civilization has often shown such polarities (对立)with the West, as though each stands at extreme ends of a global string. Now in the University of California, Berkeley, a psychologist, has discovered deeper polarities between Chinese and American cultures—polarities that go to the heart of how we reason and discover truth.

His findings go far toward explaining why American cultures seem to be aggressive and Chinese cultures so passive, when compared to each other. More importantly, the research opens the way for the peoples of the East and the West to learn from each other in basic ways. The Chinese could learn much from Western methods for determining scientific truth, said Kaiping Peng, a former Beijing Scholar, who is now a UC Berkley assistant professor of psychology. And Americans could profit enormously from the Chinese tolerance for accepting contradictions in social and personal life, he said.

“Americans have a terrible need to find out who is right in an argument,” said Peng. “The problem is that at the interpersonal level you really don’t need to find the truth, or maybe there isn’t any.” Chinese people, said Peng, are far more content to think that both sides have advantages and disadvantages, because they have a whole awareness that life is full of contradictions. They do far less blaming of the individual than do Americans, he added.

In studies of interpersonal (人际的) argument, for example, when subjects were asked to deal with contradictory information resulting from conflict between a mother and a daughter or a student and a school, Peng found that Americans were “non-compromising (折中), blaming one side—usually the mother—for the causes of the problems, demanding changes from one side to attain a solution and offering no compromise” in dealing with the conflict. Compared to this angry, blaming American method, the Chinese were paragons (模范) of compromise, finding fault on both sides and looking for solutions that moved both sides to the middle.

1In Paragraph 1, the author sets examples in order to ____.

A.expose the contradiction between Chinese and Americans

B.show the differences between Chinese culture and American culture

C.find the reason for the differences

D.generalize the main idea of the passage

2In the opinion of Peng, compared with Americans, Chinese are____.

A.likely to find the truth in life

B.unwilling to admit their own failure

C.unwilling to have a general idea of things

D.likely to know advantages and disadvantages of things

    3The studies show___.

A.an American treats his or her mother badly

B.different ideas of treating the aged

C.different personality of Chinese and Americans

D.different hobbies of Americans and Chinese

4The main idea of the passage is___.

A.polarities between American and Chinese cultures

    B.extreme ends of the string

    C.different attitudes towards the aged

    D.different manners in social occasions
