二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Cars, cots and plastic chairs became temporary beds for hundreds of families who lost their homes in southwest Puerto Rico as a series of earthquakes struck the island; one of them is the strongest in a century. The magnitude (震级) 6.4 earthquake that struck before dawn on Tuesday killed one person, injured nine others and knocked out power across the U.S. More than 250,000 Puerto Ricans remained without water on Wednesday and another half a million without power, which also affected telecommunications (电信).

More than 200 people had taken shelter in a gymnasium after an earthquake on Monday, forcing them to sleep outside. Among them was 80-year-old Lupita Martínez, who sat in the dusty parking lot with her 96-year-old husband by her side. He was sleeping in a temporary bed, a dark blue coat covering him. “There’s no power. There’s no water. There is nothing. This is horrible,” Martínez said.

The couple were alone, feeling sad that their caretaker had disappeared and was not answering their calls. Like many other Puerto Ricans affected by the earthquake, they had children in the U.S. mainland who urged them to move there, at least until the earth stopped shaking.

In Guánica itself, “We are facing a crisis worse than Hurricane Maria,” said Mayor Santos Seda, referring to the 2017 storm that destroyed the island. Tuesday’s earthquake was the strongest to hit Puerto Rico since October 1918, when a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck near the island’s northwest coast, causing a tsunami and killing 116 people.

Dayleen Ortiz set up a speaker on the roof of her car to play energetic salsa music and provided crayons and paper for children and urged adults to shake their fears. One young girl tapped Ortiz on her leg repeatedly. “I want to play a beautician,” she said. Ortiz dug behind cases of water bottles, chairs and blankets in her car and produced eight small new nail polishes (指甲油) and the girl smiled wide. It was a trick she learned professionally to calm and entertain children and help them heal after Hurricane Maria hit.

【1】What is the main idea of the first paragraph?

    A.The number of earthquakes.

    B.The influence of power failure.

    C.The reactions of people affected.

    D.The damage the earthquake made.

【2】What do we know about Lupita Martínez?

A.Her house was destroyed by the earthquake.

B.Her husband passed out in the earthquake.

C.She was out of touch with her caretaker.

D.Her children urged them to move back home.

【3】What happened to Puerto Rico in 2017?

    A.A hurricane.

    B.A tsunami.

    C.An earthquake.

    D.A flood.

【4】According to the last paragraph, Dayleen Ortiz is most probably a(n) _________.

    A.artist

    B.beautician

    C.magician

    D.psychologist

  • 27、How Can I Fight Laziness?

Lazy people will never amount to anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.

【1】Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.

Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more active approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. 【2】

Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations(诱惑)that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness.【3】Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.

Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately.【4】Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people.

Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness.【5】That will enable you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.

A.To fight family laziness, set an example.

B.Knowing how to fight laziness is important.

C.One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep.

D.Enough exercise can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle.

E.With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal.

F.Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child.

G.Laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own life.

  • 28、   Advertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why they're always coming in for criticism. Their critics(批评家)seem to hate them because they have so much money to throw around. Why don’t they stop advertising and reduce the price of their goods? After all, it’s the consumer who pays.

The poor old consumer! He'd have to pay a great deal more if advertising didn't create mass markets for products. It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. Another equally important function is to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods is largely from the advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about. Supposing you wanted to buy a washing machine, it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance, price, etc., from an advertisement.

Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim may be seriously doubted. It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway byelaws while waiting for a train? A cheerful, witty advertisement makes such a difference to a dull wall or a newspaper full of the incidents and disasters.

We must not forget, either, that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programmers is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price!

Another thing we mustn't forget is the “small ads.” What a tremendously useful service they perform for the community! Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns. For instance, you can find a job, buy or sell a house, announce a birth, marriage or death in what used to be called the “hatch, match and dispatch” column(栏目) but by far the most fascinating section is the personal or “agony” column. No other item in a newspaper provides such entertaining reading or offers such a deep insight into human nature. It's the best advertisement for advertising there is!

【1】What is the main idea of this passage?

A.Advertisements steal money from our pockets

B.The critics get the wrong idea of advertisements.

C.Advertisers perform a useful service to communities.

    D.Advertisements are everywhere.

【2】What is the attitude of the author toward advertisements?

A.He appreciates the role of advertisements.

B.He doubts the effect of advertisements.

C.He believes what is said in advertisements.

D.He complains too many advertisements in daily life.

【3】Which of the following is Not True?

A.The personal or “agony” column makes us know more about human nature.

B.The only purpose of advertising is to sell goods.

C.A newspaper will cost us more if there is no advertisement on it.

    D.Advertisement makes our life colorful.

【4】Whicof the following shows the structure of the passage?

    ( ①=" Paragraph" 1, ②=" paragraph" 2,  ③=" paragraph" 3,   ④=" paragraph" 4   ⑤=" paragraph" 5)

    A.

  • 29、What makes a good scientist?

My name is Clara. I am a climate scientist studying tiny particles in the atmosphere which is a layer of gases that surrounds our planet. I have wondered about what makes a good scientist. 【1】.

    Patience

【2】. They have patience for others, patience for themselves and patience when things go wrong. A few years ago, when I worked on a NASA mission, we sent a spacecraft to bring back a sample of an asteroid, which are rocky objects that travel around the sun. The spacecraft reached the asteroid in 2018 and returned with a piece of the asteroid in 2021. Then scientists studied it.

Scientific discoveries do not take place overnight. Many are small and go slowly. Missions often take years to complete. 【3】.

    Being Open To Others

A good scientist has an open mind. It can be easy to ignore people you do not agree with. But we should be open to new ideas and ask people what they think. 【4】 . Moreover, we should learn from our mistakes. Success almost never comes quickly or easily. Chances are you’ll stumble many times first, but that’s OK because making mistakes is part of learning.

    Curiosity

Good scientists are curious, but we should also be curious in our daily lives. When we are curious about other people, we can care about them. We can become more understanding.

After all, it is easy to be kind. You can do it anywhere, and a kind action can make someone’s day. You don’t know what people are going through unless you find out. So, ask questions about everything. Ask your friends how they’re doing. Ask yourself what makes you feel alive. Above all, make sure to pay attention to the world and the people around you.

【5】. It is our superpower, and also what makes us human.

    A.A good scientist has patience

B.Don’t be ashamed of being curious

C.Sometimes being open can be very harmful

D.That is why having patience is so important

E.Ask your workmates to have lunch with you

F.To me, it is the same as what makes a good person

G.We should do this even when we do not agree with them
