二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Despite the fact that motherhood has not been easy, Maxi Aubi believes that her son, Gianluca, has taught her much.

Gianluca was born 13 years ago with Angelman Syndrome(天使综合症), a genetic disease. Maxi was never afraid about the fact that she did not know what this condition was about. She had to get out there and face the music. “When he was a newborn baby, he used to cry all day long. He wouldn’t eat or sleep. It was an endless cycle. We ran some tests and doctors told us his progress depended on us. But it was clear that something was wrong with him. So we visited several doctors and ran some other tests until he was five,” she explains.

Despite all of this, Maxi designed a treatment plan for Gianluca. It did not matter what he was suffering from; she believed love was the “medicine” that could cure him. She formed a group of ten people of different ages outside her family who were willing to help Gianluca’s development. These people would come to her house in shifts from 9 AM to 7 PM with only one goal: to show Gianluca that he could achieve whatever he wanted. “We started encouraging him with games. During those two or three years, he learnt how to walk and he made huge progress,” she remembers.

Learning about her child’s diagnosis(诊断) was a starting point for Maxi. To help relieve the pain of parents whose children suffered from the same condition, she created the Association for Parents coping with Angelman Syndrome (APSA) which currently has about a hundred families. Living with these children is very enriching. This is why the association is not only working to provide support and guidance for the families of children with this condition; it also wants to tell people that they can also learn from these children. “We want them to come and experience what we learnt from our children,” she says.

  • 27、   The Caballero family from Tempe, Arizona were outside on their regularly scheduled walk with their dog named Olive when they were joined by a tiny baby gray fox. Now, apparently, the fox mistook Olive for her mother and started following them around the neighborhood.

The fox was about 20 centimeters in length and had a gray coat. They later found out that she was just 6 weeks old at that point. The tiny fox followed them home, where the sprinklers were on at that moment, so she ran to have a drink, which is when Rosalyn noticed how thirsty she was as she couldn’t stop drinking.

Considering that the fox was far away from home and her mother, alone-something that is not typical of foxes, the family decided it would he best to get in touch with Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center for help.

They found a box and captured the baby fox so that she wouldn’t wander off into danger. They got the fox inside the box without touching her. The kids were quick to name her Foxy.

The fox was soon brought to the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center. She was first fed using syringes(注射器), but now has learned how to eat on her own from a bowl.

"She appears to be doing quite well. She was a little dehydrated(脱水)when we got her but otherwise healthy. She was already eating solid food, so we’ve manager to fatten her up a hit in the short time she’s been at Southwest Wildlife. She’s likely to grow up into a strong, healthy girl," explained Jim Mitchell of the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center.

Foxy is now in good hands, being taken care of. They are hoping to bond Foxy with some of the other foxed that came to the center recently to return to the wild once they are strong enough.

【4】When will Foxy go to the wild?

  • 28、When young, I loved going on trail (小路)runs. It was my favorite way to escape stress. So, When I was back in my hometown after a tough first year of my Ph.D. program, I thought a trail run was just what I needed. But instead of helping me relax, the run did just the opposite.

After I moved to the city for college, where my runs were on flat concrete paths instead of winding dirt trails, I used a GPS watch. When I went on trail runs again in the country, it constantly reminded me of the fact that I wasn’t keeping up with my usual pace. I turned my watch off, thinking that would allow me to enjoy my surroundings and find the peace I expected, but I worried I was underperforming. Why cant I let go and just enjoy myself? I wondered. But after some introspection(反省), I realized why I was struggling ——both on trail runs and in graduate school.

Going into my Ph.D., I had thought that my solid undergraduate track record would set me up for instant success. To my surprise, I was wrong. I lacked confidence in my research abilities which I thought stopped me performing well and I constantly felt my progress was too slow. Other students’ self -confidence and their excellent results made me feel insecure. Finally, one day I broke down in tears in my adviser’s office.

Then came my visit home: I was having trouble because I hadn’t properly adjusted my expectations to the differences between an urban run and a trail run.

A Ph. D. is like a trail run: Sometimes you can run fast. Sometimes you might find yourself climbing up a steep, winding trail at a snail’s pace. And that’s OK. Barriers are unavoidable and success looks and feels different on a challenging trail than it does on a smooth, flat path. Sometimes it’s best to take a deep breath and do your best to meet the challenge.

【1】How did the author feel when he was on trail runs again?

    A.Relaxed

    B.Tired

    C.Anxious

    D.Happy

【2】What resulted in the authors poor performance in Ph.D.?

    A.His lack of confidence

    B.His lack of hard work

    C.His poor research abilities

    D.His poor track record

【3】What does the author want to tell us?

A.Failure is the mother of success

    B.Working out regularly is beneficial

C.It's important to make necessary adjustments

D.It's vital to turn to others for help

  • 29、It is never easy to cope with all the unwanted bullying (恐吓) even when you have done nothing wrong. 【1】 Keep the following tips in mind to stop the situation from getting worse.

【2】When bullies confront you, it may be hard to stay calm, but this is key to ignoring them. Avoiding showing emotions that you are upset or feel hurt discourages the bully. When you do not react to what they say or do, they start to lose interest in you. And they will naturally stop bothering you.

Ask them to stop. If walking away doesn't work, tell the bully to stop in a calm, unemotíonal voice. Sometimes when we do not speak up for ourselves, the bullies may think of us as easy targets and continue with their behavior. 【3】

Be accompanied. If you are with your friends, or if you are in the company of someone, it is least likely that the bully will disturb you. 【4】 That is not asking you to make a huge circle of friends. Sometimes, all it takes is one loyal friend who will stay by you no matter what happens.

Talk to someone you trust about the bullying. 【5】Being the target of bullying is not your fault and you don’t have to go through it alone. Your friends, family members, teachers, and school counselors do not want this for you. Tell them what’s going on so they can help you and support you.

    A.Be calm and avoid reacting,

B.Know what to say to the bully.

C.Bullies usually hunt for people who are alone.

D.Keeping the bullying in secret is what the bully wants.

E.Furthermore, there is no point in talking openly about bullying.

F.But doing nothing in return will only result in more intense bullying.

G.However, raising our voice or responding angrily can make things worse.
