  • 26、Owning a smart phone may not be as smart as you think. They may let you surf the Internet, listen to music and snap photos wherever you are... but they also turn you into a workaholic (工作狂). A study suggests that, by giving you access to emails at all times, the all-singing, all-dancing mobile phone adds as much as two hours to your working day.

Researchers found that Britons work an additional 460 hours a year on average as they are able to respond to emails on their mobiles. The study by technology retailer Pixmania, shows the average UK working day is between nine and ten hours, but a further two hours is spent responding to or sending work emails, or making work calls. Almost one in ten admits spending up to three hours outside their normal working day checking work emails. Some workers confess (坦白) they are on call almost 24 hours a day, with nine out of ten saying they take work emails and calls outside their normal working hours. Nearly two-thirds say they often check work emails just before they go to bed and as soon as they wake up, while over a third have replied to one in the middle of the night.

Ghadi Hobeika, marketing director of Pixmania, said, “The ability to access millions of apps, keep in contact via social networks and take photos and video as well as text and call has made smart phones valuable for many people. However, there are drawbacks. Many companies expect their employees to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and smart phones mean that people cannot get away from work. The more constantly in contact we become, the more is expected of us in a work capacity (容量).”

【1】The text is probably taken from __________.

    C. a newspaper   D. a travel journal

【2】The underlined word “drawbacks” in the last paragraph probably means __________.

    A. employees are supposed to be on call 24 hours a day

    B. the ability to access many apps made smart phones worthless

    C. smart phones might turn a person into a workaholic

    D. people cannot get away from work without smart phones

【4】What is the main idea of this passage?

    A. Smart phones are lengthening working hours.

    B. Smart phones are becoming valuable for many people.

    C. Britons work an additional 460 hours a year on average.

  • 28、The concept of sharing goods and services with your community as a means of economic transaction is ancient. But thanks to the Internet, the concept now has global scale at the click of a button. It’s called the sharing economy. At its most basic, the sharing economy, also known as the collaborative or peer-to-peer economy, is about connecting individuals with resources to others that want them. It often works through lending or borrowing but can also involve the financial transaction of goods or services.

While the concept of sharing economy has been round for some time, the coming of apps and smartphone technology means that it’s easier for individuals to participate in peer-to-peer sharing transactions in real time.

There are many reasons why people participate in the sharing economy, but here are some of the biggest ones:

Finding temporary accommodation while travelling can be stressful, especially if you’re looking for something on short notice. Thanks to the sharing economy, there are a few popular services that connect people looking to rent out their apartment or home with travelers for as little as a day or two.

Everyone who’s ever driven in a major city knows that finding parking can be a real pain.Limited parking spaces and higher fees have contributed to tech-based services that can help you find and even reserve an available parking space. Whether you’re pressed for time or need to find somewhere to leave the car for a day or two while visiting an unfamiliar city, parking is one more headache the sharing economy is helping alleviate.

For pet owners, leaving town on vacation can be a stressful experience. Finding a dog sitter on short notice can be a problem, and leaving your pet at a kennel might leave you worried about their well-being when you should be relaxing. Luckily, a little tech-inspired collaboration can offer an elegant solution. Partnering pet owners with willing hosts can give your dog a vacation of their own, with plenty of TLC “tender loving care” and space to roam in the home of a fellow pet lover.

Now it is true that apps empower you to exchange a variety of items.with people from all over. Whether it’s a bike, some tools you need for project, or anything in between, collaborative economies make it easier to access the things you need without cash.

【1】How can the sharing economy help people find temporary accommodation while travelling?

A.By checking the information on short notice.

B.By giving people much useful information.

C.By offering those in need some popular services.

D.By finding people who want to rent out their home.

【2】. What does the underlined word “alleviate” in Paragraph 5 mean?

    A.Improve,

    B.Handle.

    C.Disappear.

    D.Relieve.

【3】What is probably the author’s attitude towards the sharing economy?

    A.Neutral.

    B.Positive.

    C.Negative.

    D.Indifferent.

【4】What’s the structure of the passage?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

  • 29、Entering the main office of the Anderson Center, it's not uncommon to hear music, since the property has long served as an artists’ community.

But recently, the sounds ringing through the building began to sound unlike others. The music was from the center's art gallery, where Jarrelle Barton practices his guzheng.

Although the ancient Chinese instrument is popular worldwide, guzheng players are rare in Minnesota, and Barton is the first one to participate in Anderson's residency program, “He was chosen because of his technical capabilities, as well as his potential,” said Stephanie Rogers, the center's director.

Most kids of Barton's age are more likely to take up the piano or guitar. But as his grandmother described him, Baton is a “special person”—a little quiet, but with very deep feelings. When he first saw a picture of a guzheng, he tried to make his own out of a wooden tea tray and guitar strings. But the instrument he made was very different from a guzheng. It was light, and it didn't sound great.

Barton begged his grandmother to buy him a guzheng. She agreed, but added that he had to really practice and become a good guzheng player.

Acquiring the instrument proved less complicated than learning to play it. Barton couldn't find any textbooks in English, and the online courses he found were in Chinese too. So, he started teaching himself Mandarin (普通话). At the same time, he accustomed his body to “feeling” guzheng music.

Barton recently uploaded his videos to the social media platform Sina Weibo. They soon went viral, with viewers making comments such as “Great!” or “This foreigner can play our music.”

Music goes beyond nationality. You can learn an instrument regardless of what language you speak. You can learn any instrument you'd like and create music to share with people.

【1】Why was Barton the first one to participate in Anderson's residency program?

    A.His grandmother insisted.

B.He was the first to play guzheng.

C.His skills and talent were impressive.

D.He was one of the few who could play guzheng.

【2】How did Barton feel when he first saw a picture of a guzheng?

    A.Puzzled.

    B.Excited.

    C.Disappointed.

    D.Anxious.

【3】What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably mean?

A.Music is the best way to communicate.

B.Music can be spread far and wide.

    C.Music is a universal language.

    D.Music can go further.

【4】What is the purpose of the text?

    A.To promote a music program.

    B.To advertise the Anderson Center.

C.To persuade foreigner to play guzheng.

D.To introduce the great power of music.

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Claudia’s mom first saw the advertisement in a newspaper. The advertisement told of an AmeriCorps-sponsored workshop to train 100 teenagers in leadership skills and community service. Claudia sent in her application and was one of the teenagers chosen to go to Fort Devens, Massachusetts, in the summer when she was 16.

During the leadership training, Claudia worked with a team of 10 kids. Together they surveyed, planned, and set up a meeting for minority business owners to find out how crime and safety affected them. After surveying more than 150 people, Claudia and her friends provided information to businesses about alarm systems and other safety measures.

At the end of her AmeriCorps training, Claudia was one of only two teens chosen to attend a Sumner of Safety National Forum. She received more training there and returned home with enthusiasm.

That’s when her mom told her about a problem at the day-care center where she worked. All day long, kids from a nearby housing project would press their noses against the windows of the center, knocking and begging to use the playground. But the playground was always locked, and only children whose parents paid for day care were allowed to use it.

“That’s when it hit me,” Claudia remembers. “I had really developed my leadership skills and a desire to serve by helping those small businesses. So I went to a teacher at Framingham High School and made a proposal for an after-school program for those children living in the low-income housing project.” Claudia received lots of support from about 20 other teens in a service club at the high school.

The project wasn’t easy. First, Claudia struggled to find a place to house the program. The Framingham Housing Authority finally agreed to donate a facility next door to the day-care center. Claudia immediately organized her friends to collect donations of crayons, paper, scissors, and supplies from teachers and day-care centers. Then she made a flyer (传单) and distributed it around the housing project.
