  • 26、Let’s learn about some of the most interesting abandoned settlements, from ancient ruins to modern ghost towns.

    Angamuco, Mexico

The city of Angamuco in North America, built around AD 900, is thought to have had 100,000 citizens and included pyramids, road systems, vegetable gardens and ball courts. It was a major center for the Purepecha, competitors to the Aztec peoples. Both of their cultures were destroyed in the 16th century when Europeans introduced bad diseases there.

    Termessos, Turkey

Alexander the Great once compared this great city — located 1,000 meters up a mountain — to an eagle's nest. And despite surrounding it in 333 BC,the failed to take it. The most famous site of this city was a Roman-style theater. The city was abandoned around 200 AD because of a big earthquake.

    Gedi, Kenya

Lying on the Indian Ocean coast, among thick forests, this settlement is thought to have been founded around the 13th century. Gedi had running water and flushing toilets. Scientists have also found vases from the Ming Dynasty and Venetian glass on the site. Its abandonment several centuries later still remains a secret.

    Mohenjo-daro, Pakistan

Founded around 2500 BC, this Indus Valley city had a street system and a complex drainage (排水) system. The city developed successfully, with up to 40,000 settlers living off the floodplain which was rich in good soil, and traded with Mesopotamia. However, the cause of its decline from 1900 BC still puzzles scientists today.

    Priyat, Ukraine

After reactor No.4 at Chernobyl exploded in April 1986, giving off deadly radiations (放射物) into the atmosphere, several nearby settlements were moved elsewhere. Among them was Priyat, once a city built to house nuclear (核能) workers, Three decades later, this place had been repopulated by deer, wolves and other animals. You can now tour the town and get a radiation screening when you leave.

At last, you have grown up. At least you are no longer a child. They call you “young lady”. You then enjoy the pleasure of being a young lady. You are proud of being a grown-up teenager. People welcome you-this young lady-heartily. You are glad that your prayer has been answered.

But there is always something that troubles you a lot. You say; “Papa and Mama, give me some money please. My pocket money is all gone already.”

  • 29、The parents of a young man with Down Syndrome (唐氏综合症) have made an incredible move to set up his future after he faced constant rejections when looking for work.

After graduation, Anthony, 19-year-old, should have faced multiple career choices about which door to open, but when he actually tried those doors, one after the other, it was locked. Danijela and John Vrkic, from Canberra, were genuinely concerned about their son's future. It was rather difficult for people with a disability, especially those with an intellectual disability, to find any type of work. Inspired by their son, they decided to leave their respective careers behind to build a business.

Mrs. Vrkic got to work armed with her traditional family recipe for "krofhe', or doughnuts (甜甜圈),which dates back over four generations. She tested the market by sharing her homemade krofne at her previous office with colleagues and friends. Fortunately, it proved to be a hit. After four years in business, there are Krofine Canberra pop-up shops at a number of shopping centres, and an online store is also available.

Today, Krofne is a much loved, disability-inclusive family business and a social enterprise in Canberra. Employment opportunities for people with special needs have been generated. The specially designed KINECT program has highlighted how important it is for people with a disability to feel valued and included in the community. Mrs. Vrkic is an incredibly passionate advocate for inclusivity. She feels if somebody has a disability, it doesn't necessarily mean that they can't work. What she would like to see is for Australia to be inclusive—that every organisation understands and employs the disabled. That is her goal.

On the International Day of People with Disabilities, Mrs. Vrkic was invited to speak at Parliament House. She said, “We're a very small fish in the sea, if our business can do it, why can't other people ?”

【1】What did the parents do incredibly?

    A.They made doughnuts to sell.

    B.They raised a child with a disability.

C.They quit their jobs to help their son.

D.They weren't discouraged after losing jobs.

【2】Why were Mrs. Vrkic's doughnuts popular?

A.Because she drew the inspiration from her son.

B.Because she followed the recipe passed down in her family.

C.Because she applied the technique learned from her previous job.

D.Because she got assistance from her previous colleagues and friends.

【3】Which of the following words can best describe Mrs. Vrkic?

    A.Caring and ambitious.

    B.Elegant and determined.

    C.Humorous and brave.

    D.Passionate and curious.

【4】What can be inferred from Mrs. Vrkic's saying?

    A.Her success can be followed.

B.Her business needs to be expanded.

C.Every business can succeed with united efforts.

D.Every business can offer the disabled assistance.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in each blank with a proper word given in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one more word than you need.

    New Year’s Resolutions (决心)

It’s January 1, the day when many people around the world announce their New Year’s resolutions. In theory, a new year should be the time when people change their habits. In  1, it doesn’t work that way.

There are some advantages to choosing January 1 to start new habits. For one thing, it comes right after several holidays. And for many people, holidays are  2with food, often food that isn’t very healthy. After a month or so of lots of eating, people begin to realize that they need to 3. It’s no wonder that losing weight is one of the most 4resolutions every year!

While many people’s 5to change is real, most New Year’s resolutions don’t last all year, or even all month. One survey indicated that the average resolution only lasts three and a half weeks! For many, an honest resolution might be: “I will eat healthy food until I start longing for dessert, and then I’ll go back to eating 6.”

One common problem with New Year’s resolutions is that they aren’t specific enough. Maybe you 7to eat healthier or be friendlier. But if you don’t have a plan, how will you know if you’ve reached your goal? Generally, resolutions tend to fade (渐弱) out of your  8. They’ll

return again the next year when you start 9about resolutions again.

Resolutions often 10, but don’t be discouraged. If there’s something you want to change about your life, it won’t hurt to try. And if you fail now, don’t worry. Lunar New year is right around the corner!

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I have always loved libraries ever since I was a boy. Over the years I have read more books than I can count and I have visited the local libraries more times than I can remember. Now in the age of the Internet and with so many faces in screens instead of books, I am concerned that places like these will begin to fade away and we will lose all the joy they bring.

I stopped at the library nearest my home just the other day. It was right off from the local grade school and had been my home since I was young. I opened the door and walked inside. The librarian, David, greeted me warmly, “Good afternoon, Jane. Welcome to the library again.” On the desk next to him sat a beautiful, black cat. “Good afternoon, Mr David. What a cute cat!” I patted the cat gently on the head and smiled.

I gave David a book I wanted to donate and then wandered into the back room to look at the books for sale. The black cat had returned to the room. She stretched. She sharpened her claws for a moment on the furniture. Then she jumped up on the shelf. She meowed (喵喵叫) and let her head up against my hand hoping that I would start petting her again. I smiled and petted her head, and spoke sweetly to her while she rolled on her back.

I thought that if only we could let our guard down as easily and openly as this cat then this world would be a lot more beautiful. I gave my new furry friend some food and then walked out. Then I picked out a book about animal protection, where I learned a lot. The world is full of life, wisdom and love. Let’s benefit from people, nature, books and libraries, and occasionally friendly cats.

    1.续写词数应为150左右;
