二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a clothes addict,” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled.” Today David wears casual clothes-khaki pants and sports shirt to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I’m working harder than ever,” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.”

More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday(but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing.” said business consultant Maisly Jones.

Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale(士气). Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”

【1】David Smith refers to himself as having been “a clothes addict,” because _______.

    A. he often wore khaki pants and a sports shirt

    B. he couldn’t stand a clean appearance

    C. he wanted his clothes to look neat all the time

    D. he didn’t want to spend much money on clothes

【2David Smith wears casual clothes now, because _______.

    A. they make him feel at ease when working

    B. he cannot afford to buy expensive clothes

    C. he looks handsome in casual clothes

    D. he no longer works for any company

【3According to this passage, which of the following statements is false?

    A. Many employees don’t like a conservative dress code.

    B. Comfortable clothes make employees more productive.

    C. A casual clothes code is welcomed by young employees.

    D. All the employers in the U. S. are for casual office wear.

【4】In this passage, the following advantages of casual office wear are mentioned in the passage except _______.

    A. saving employees’ money

    B. making employees more attractive

    C. improving employees’ motivation

    D. making employees happier

  • 27、Picture this: two new kids show up at school one day. One is dressed in sport trousers and a dirty T-shirt. The other looks like someone out of a fashion magazine. Which one is more likely to make friends on their first day?

Everybody knows the saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. But let’s not pretend that style isn’t important. Other people pay attention to how you look. They are much more likely to like you if you are well-dressed. What’s more, when we look good, we feel more confident in ourselves.

You may think you have to wear a school uniform. That’s true, but there are still plenty of chances for you to show your style.

Put on your favourite dress and you will feel more outgoing and energetic. Wear something you don’t like, and see how much you feel like talking to someone you are fond of. Put on a nice suit like one that celebrities might wear and watch your posture change. Roll out of bed in yesterday’s dirty clothes and you will never feel like a winner. What you wear on the outside reflects the way you feel on the inside. Good style can even put you in a better mood.

That’s why it’s important to find a style that fits your personality. Different people look good in different things. It’s important to understand that style doesn’t mean just one thing. Some people may wear elegant dresses, while others like a more casual style. Some guys may feel comfortable in a suit, while others may just want to relax in jeans and a T-shirt. What is your style?

  • 28、As one of the biggest topics of the last decade, sustainability has become the beacon (灯塔) of hope to protect the planet. From supermarkets taking action on plastic packaging to the zero was to movement that can be practised from your kitchen, changes made by individuals and organizations across the globe have had an impact on the way we think shop and live.

So what does that mean for the world of technology? You’d be forgiven for thinking that the words “sustainable” and “technology” don’t usually go hand in hand. E-waste is, after all, one of tho planet’s biggest contributing waste streams. Not only that, but the materials that go into technology products are also part of the problem.

But with a challenge comes an opportunity, and there’s already some brilliant progress happening —great news for those of us wanting to be more sustainable with our technology. Firstly renewed products are having its moment. While consumers would previously turn their noses up the idea of a second-hand device, there’s been a huge surge in demand for renewed technology products. The second major step in tackling the problem of e-waste is a change in attitudes from owning a product to subscribing for one. A subscription for a smartphone might sound like a foreign concept, but it’s already gaining momentum. At the forefront of this movement is a London-base technology startup, which offers a subscription service for the latest smartphones. As customer aren’t paying to own the phone at the end of their contract, the monthly price is significantly low than average.

Studies show that extending a phone’s lifespan from one to four years can decrease environmental impact by about 40%. So the next time it comes to refreshing your device-whether a smartphone, laptop, tablet or something else-consider the more environmentally friendly options that are at your fingertips.

【1】What’s the purpose of paragraph 1?

A.To change the way we think shop and live.

B.To introduce the topic of sustainability in technology.

C.To tell us what people have done to protect the planet.

D.To call on people to do something for the environment.

【2】What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

A.High-tech products are in short supply.

B.E-waste contributes to the biggest waste streams.

C.The two sustainability problems in technology.

    D.Ignoring sustainable technology is unforgivable.

【3】What is present consumers’ attitude towards a second-hand device?

    A.Supportive.

    B.unacceptable.

    C.Sympathy.

    D.Doubtful

【4】How can we become sustainable in technology according to the text?

  • 29、What do you want to be when you grow up? A teacher? A doctor? How about an ice-cream taster?

Yes, there really is a job where you can get paid to taste ice-cream. Just ask John Harrion, an “Official Taste Tester” for the past 21 years. Testing helps manufacturers to be sure of a product’s quality. During his career Harrison has been responsible for approving large quantities of the sweet ice cream — as well as for developing over 75 flavors (味道).

Some people think that it would be easy to do this job, after all, you just have to like ice cream, right? No — there’s more to the job than that, says Harrison, who has a degree in chemistry. He points out that a dairy or food-science degree would be very useful to someone wanting a career in this “cool” field.

In a typical morning on the job, Harrison tastes and assesses 60 ice-cream samples. He lets the ice cream warm up to about 12℉. Harrison explains, “You get more flavor from warmer ice cream, which is why some kids like to stir it, creating ice-cream soup.”

While the ice cream warms up, Harrison looks over the samples and grades each one on its appearance. “Tasting begins with the eyes,” he explains. He checks to see if the ice cream is attractive and asks himself, “Does the product have the color expected from that flavor?” Next it’s time to taste!

Continuing to think up new ideas, try out new flavors, and test samples from so many kinds of ice cream each day keeps Harrison busy but happy — working at one cool job.

【1】What does the “cool field” refer to according to the passage?

    A.chemistry experimenting.

    B.Ice-cream manufacturing.

    C.Ice-creaming tasting.

    D.food science researching.

【2】According to John Harrison, to be a qualified taster, it is helpful to ________.

    A.keep a diary of work

B.have a degree in related subjects

    C.have new ideas every day

D.find out new flavors each day

【3】What does Harrison do first when testing ice cream?

    A.He stirs the ice cream.

B.He examines the color of the ice cream.

C.He tastes the flavor of the ice cream.

D.He lets the ice cream warm up.
