二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、What will our future look like? People have always been wondering about this question. Go on reading this text and you will know what will happen in the next fifty years.

How can we know what the future will look like? To be able to understand the future, you must know the past. What has taken us to where we are today and what has changed along the way? The world has changed a lot in the last 150 years, but we humans are driven by the same basic needs as we were 150 years ago. Will this change in the next 150 years? No.

What inventions have really made a difference in the last 150 years? In the past years, the inventions that have affected most people around the world for everyday living are the telephone, electricity, radio, television, computer, the car and the ability to communicate through the Internet. Then we of course have a lot of inventions that have made life easier, like new medicine, faster transports etc. In general, human beings have been working hard in the last 150 years to make the inventions so that they will be able to get control of the time and the world. Since there is still much to do in this area, this will be the focus at least for the next 150 years.

Why do we need to predict the future? Predicting the future is important for two reasons: first we need to start to think about what kind of what kind of future we would like for ourselves and to pass on to the next generation, and then we need to know what decisions we need to make today that will give the best result in the future.

【1】What does the author try to tell us in the second paragraph?

    A. Humans will no longer enjoy food in the future.

    B. The world will be completely changed tomorrow.

    C. The world is quite different from what it was.

    D. Our basic needs will not change in the future.

【2】Our past inventions have made __________.

    A. our daily life more stressful

    B. it easy for us to live

    C. us work less time

    D. our work easily done

【3】What will humans do in order to keep the world under control?

    A. To focus on making more inventions.

    B. To produce more cars for transportation.

    C. To spend more time working on the Internet.

    D. To work much harder to achieve their goals.

【4】What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

    A. What result we’ll receive in the future.

    B. The decisions we make for our future.

    C. The two reasons of predicting the future

    D. The importance of predicting the future.

  • 27、We’ve had weather forecasts for years. Forecasting our near-term health is far harder. Yet knowing early that we may be coming down with the flu could be greatly helpful. Wearable technology, such as smart watches, is beginning to provide just such early warnings.

A research team asked 49 volunteers to wear wristbands with sensors before and after they received a cold or flu virus. At least once per second, there wristbands recorded heart rates, body movements, skin temperatures and more. In nine out of every ten participants, these data showed signs of developing illness at least a day before symptoms(症状)appeared.

This early warning can help stop infections (传染) in the beginning. It may head off serious symptoms that otherwise would send weak people into hospital, allowing them to get some rest, reduce their stress and perhaps take drugs. And knowing you’re sick before you have symptoms can warn you to lay low so you can reduce the chance of spreading your disease.

However, these systems aren’t yet ready for the real world. One challenge is that many viral infections have similar symptoms. In fact, many things other than viruses cause the same symptoms. Examples include food poisoning, asthma or seasonal allergies. Similarly, heart rates respond to things that have nothing to do with infections, such as exercise and scary movies. What’s more, in real life, we don’t know who was exposed (暴露) to some virus and when, so that post-exposure time window won’t be known. Potentially infected people might be those whose data go beyond a certain value in any two-hour window. But the team has not yet tested how well the prediction model would work in this setting.

The study sounds exciting, but much work is left to do. Future systems will likely include other types of bodily changes that pinpoint developing illness. And researchers will be fine-tuning (微调) those systems by analyzing how well they predict effects in thousands of people.

【1】What is wearable technology used for in the research?

    A.Confirming positions.

    B.Predicting diseases.

    C.Forecasting weather.

    D.Refreshing the volunteers.

【2】How does early warning benefit weak people?

A.It greatly improves their physical condition.

B.It protects them from virus infections.

C.It reminds them to treat diseased earlier.

D.It can completely stop virus from spreading.

【3】What is paragraph 4 mainly talking about?

A.The various responses to the warning systems.

B.The similar symptoms for viral infections.

C.The main purposes of the prediction model.

D.The limitations of the early warning systems.

【4】What does the underlined word “pinpoint” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Show.

    B.Cure.

    C.Research.

    D.Cause.

  • 28、Eating healthier may be as simple as not going to the grocery store, one study revealed. Participants who ordered their groceries online spent less money on junk food compared to when they shopped in person, according to the study. Researchers tracked the spending patterns of 137 shoppers over the course of 44 weeks. People who shopped online spent on average about $2.50 less on unhealthy food purchases like candy and frozen desserts compared to when they did their shopping inside stores, said study author Laura Zatz.

The study did not examine why shoppers spent less money on unhealthy food when they shopped online, there are some likely reasons, such as a reduction in opportunities for impulse (冲动) purchases. “Online shopping allows shoppers to keep away from lots of in-store marketing and attractive food stimuli (刺激), which encourages us to add items to our basket that we didn’t plan to purchase,” Zatz said. “Those towers of junk food at the end of grocery store aisles don’t exist online.” Besides, many people have presaved grocery lists, or their food options are based on their dietary needs, she added. Who we shop with may also play a role in our purchase, said Stephanie Rogus, professor of human nutrition at New Mexico State University. When shopping in person, adults often bring along their children or other family members, who may ask for unhealthy food.

Online grocery shopping is still relatively new, and Zatz said that marketing will evolve and influence shoppers to purchase unhealthy food online. Grocery stores may begin to advertise foods that aren’t selling as well in the form of pop-up ads or personalized recommendations to overcome reduced spending on certain items. If unhealthy foods are underselling, shoppers might start seeing ads for them.

Shoppers spent 44% more per transaction (交易) and purchased more items online versus in stores, researchers also found. Transaction fees could have influenced this trend, Rogus said. Many online grocery services have a transaction fee, so combining shopping trips to have fewer transactions could have saved the participants some money. At some stores, spending a certain amount could mean the fee is free. Most of the shoppers in this study were higher-income and could potentially afford to spend more money to avoid transaction fees or hit a required minimum payment for online orders.

The majority of food shopping was still done in person during the study’s time period, with participants shopping online just under 29% of the time. There is potential for online grocery shopping to reduce unhealthy food purchases, Rogus said, but the high percentage of times participants choosing to shop at a physical store means the full impact is unclear.

Online shopping can reduce the amount of money spent on unhealthy foods, but “people still need to make a wise decision to plan ahead and purchase a healthful and varied mix of foods consistent with a healthy diet,” Zatz stressed.

【1】Why do people tend to spend less on junk food when shopping online?

A.They long to save some money.

B.They want to protect the environment.

C.They aren’t attracted by online junk food.

D.They doubt the quality of online junk food.

【2】What opinion does Zatz want to express about the future situations?

A.Increasing advertisements will focus on healthy food.

B.People will spend less on junk food to keep healthy.

C.Online marketing will become more and more complex.

D.Marketing strategies influence people’s shopping behaviour.

【3】Which of the following is the disadvantage of online shopping?

    A.Internet access.

    B.The price of goods.

    C.The amount of waste.

    D.Transaction charges.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Online shopping is developing rapidly

B.How to get access to healthy food online

C.People reduce spending on junk food online

D.A comparison between two types of shopping

  • 29、With courses on David Beckham and Harry Potter on offer at famous universities, it comes as no surprise that students are now able to learn the art of the perfect selfie (自拍).

The concept of taking selfies gained great popularity. It soon exploded on the Internet, and people started crazily to take images that had them as the primary item of focus. The trend became so popular that it even inspired a song, “SELHE” by the Chainsmokers, which racked up 267 million views on YouTube. In fact, Twitter declared 2014 as “the year of the selfie”.

Just like the art of photography can be studied and improved, City Literary Institute, a well-known college in London, felt it needed to educate people on the fine art of taking the perfect selfie and officially started to offer a first-ever course on that.

The four-session course will cost £132 (£106 for seniors), but the fee wont even include a free selfie-stick, a tool that is rapidly gaining acceptance for serious selfie-takers. It is open to all enthusiastic and self-obsessed photographers.

As part of the new course, self-absorbed photographers will be taught “valuable life skills” to prepare themselves to face a world which could present a photo opportunity at any point. Apart from offering the much-needed but seldom-sought guidance on the best angles and lighting, the course promises to improve your critical understanding of the “selfie”. There will also be a brief exploration into the concepts of “identity,self-hood and memory” as well as the opportunity to “develop new ideas to you’re your photography more relevant to your aims.”

Most men and women feel that a dinner bill should be split down the middle, how fair is this it really? A new app aims to answer this question, and for others who fall 1 to income inequality, by dividing the check-up according to each person's race and gender.

Equipay uses Bureau of Labor Statistics and math to calculate how much is2 from each person , but it will only give you statistics about the wage3.

'Equipay helps you avoid the firm discrimination that exists in our society. It doesn't work out an equal split of the bill but a 4one.' the company's site says. 'You pay what you should to balance out the wage diversity.' The app is the brain child of Luna Malbroux, a diversity educator and comedian from California, who wanted to 'make the touchy subject' of racial and gender inequalities more 5, The problem is expected to catch people’s eye easily.

“I hope that this, more than anything, starts a discussion and helps people to start thinking a little bit differently about how we can use technology and innovation to6 inequality and wage inequality, ” Malbroux said.

The app has a built in 'diversity tool' that allows you to7 how diverse your friends really are, the list also displays the level of diversity for each person.

Type in the amount of the entire bill at the top, tip included, and the software will begin calculating the split based on who your8 is. Finally it will show you the list again, but now with how much each person owes.

Before paying your share, there is the9 to protest, in which the app will ask 'what's your excuse' and lists reasons for you to choose from. You can say 'I was a middle child' or 'I'm unaware of my privilege'.Equipay will find the best reply possible, whether it is facts regarding income inequalities or something seemingly10 but also makes you think twice before disagreeing with what you have to pay.
