二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Almost everyone knows the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”, which means you should not guess the worth or value of something based on how it looks. That message was clear at a recent event called the Human Library Project. The event took place at the Northern Virginia, or NoVa, Community College, outside of Washington. D.C.

The Human Library began 19 years ago in Denmark. It grew from a youth organization called “Stop the Violence”. Today, it is a worldwide movement. At the NoVa event, students got the chance to learn from a person — a “human book” — instead of a library book.

Patricia Cooper organized the event. She said that human books celebrate variety by telling their life stories in an easy-going setting. The goal of the human library is to talk to people in your community who you may otherwise not speak to because you have your own prejudices and hopefully to break down some of these barriers.

This is the third year that NoVa has held such an event. The collection of human books included a civil rights activist, a scientist from the American space agency NASA, and an opera singer.

Artist Brian Dailey was a human book. He spoke about his travels to 113 countries in seven years. Dailey said that, during his travels, he asked people whom he took pictures of for a one-word answer to a series of other words-such as love, freedom and war. He discovered that people in different countries often had very different reactions to the same word.

When Dailey asked people in Africa about the word “war” they used words like justice, liberation and peace. When he asked the same question to people in Syrian refugee (难民) camps, the answer was: “tears, hunger, fear, destruction”.

  • 28、   There are plenty of health benefits of spending time in the great outdoors. According to a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research, people who grew up with access to nature may have better mental health as adults than those who did not.

To test their hypothesis (假设) ,researchers sent questionnaires to 3, 585 adults aged 18 to 75 in four European cities on topics such as how often they visited natural spaces as children and now as adults. Participants were also given psychological test to determine the state of their mental health in the last month. Adults with low levels of nature exposure during childhood saw “significantly worse” mental health issues and did not view natural spaces as much importance in adulthood as those who spent more time growing up outside.

Researchers say that their findings show the importance of childhood exposure to natural spaces as it relates to developing an appreciation of nature and healthy psychological state in adulthood.

This is particularly significant, because almost three-quarters of Europeans currently live in urban areas with little access to green spaces. That number is expected to increase to 80 percent in the next three decades. Mental health has been shown to be negatively influenced by urban environments due to exposure to noise, crowds and a lack of green spaces among other things. Children who lead inactive lifestyles are more likely to have a lower quality of life and physical health.

“Many children in Europe lead an indoor lifestyle, so it would be desirable to make natural outdoor environments available, attractive and safe for them to play in," said study author Mark Nieuwenhuijsen, director of ISGlobal's Urban Planning, Environment and Health Initiative. "We make a call on policymakers to improve the availability of natural spaces for children and green schoolyards."

【1】What inspiration do researchers take from their findings ?

    A.the health of children's psychology.

B.the state of children's mental health.

    C.the development of nature appreciation.

D.the importance of childhood exposure to nature.

【2】What can we infer from Paragraph 4 ?

    A.Europeans prefer an inactive lifestyle.

B.European Children are in good physical health.

C.Europeans lack access to natural spaces.

D.European Children probably suffer lower quality of life.

【3】What in the future is the study most likely to influence according to the last paragraph?

    A.Urban planning.

    B.Economic policies.

    C.Child education.

    D.Local tourism.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.Indoor Activities Are Good for Children's Growth

B.Living in Urban Areas Harms Psychological Health

C.An Inactive Lifestyle Means a Lower Quality of Life

D.Childhood Exposure to Nature Benefits Mental Health

  • 29、Perhaps you have seen them, those who fall asleep on the subway and then, somehow, wake up exactly at their stop. Perhaps you are one of them. How is this possible? We spoke to two doctors, who offered their insights about it.

It is possible that your body gets used to waking up at a certain point each time during your commute, said Dr. Marc I. Leavey, a primary-care specialist in Maryland. That holds especially true if you commute at the same time every day. This suggests that if you were to get on at a different time, or if the journey were delayed, your internal clock might not wake you up at your stop. It is an interesting theory, but Dr. Ronald Chervin, director of Michigan Medicine’s Sleep Disorders Centers, does not fully buy it. He is skeptical that circadian rhythms can also explain why you wake up after a brief nap.

You are also likely to wake up for your particular stop because of an oral cue, such as the conductor stating the name of the subway stop over the public-address system. Such cues alert your brain that you have arrived, explained Dr Leavey. According to a study published in the Public Library of Science, during sleep, our brain reacts differently when we hear our own name and other people’s names, noted Dr Chervin. This suggests that your brain does not turn off during sleep, which makes it possible to pick up on the announcement of your stop.

Another reasonable possibility: You may wake up at each stop, check if it is yours, and go back to sleep, all without having remembered it, added Dr. Chervin. He sees this in cases where patients are suffering from sleep apnea. They may wake up as many as 200 times during a single night, without having remembered a single instance. That’s because they fall right back asleep before their brain has time to process their experience into long-term memory. Similarly, you could be waking up every time you hear a new stop called. But you just don’t remember such instances even after you fully come awake for your stop—leading you to believe that you have slept the whole way through and miraculously woken up at the right time.

【1】According to Dr Leavey, which of the following might wake you up at your stop?

    A.Sense of time.

    B.Sleep apnea.

    C.Internal clock.

    D.Oral communication.

【2】What does the underlined expression “doesn’t fully buy it” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.He can’t agree more.

    B.He can’t catch it well.

C.He doesn’t like it at all.

    D.He doesn’t totally believe it.

【3】How will our brain react when we hear our name called during sleep?

    A.Actively.

    B.Passively.

    C.Differently.

    D.Casually.

【4】How does Dr. Chervin explain his findings in the last paragraph?

    A.By introducing a concept.

In the United States, a company is working on a project that could change the way we think about public transportation. Its1system would move people around in steel tubes. Those passengers would be traveling at speeds of up to 1, 200 kilometers per hour.

The futuristic steel tube transportation system is called Hyperloop. Workers plan to test the system next year in a 2built community called Quay Valley. The town will be powered.3by energy from the sun.

The Hyperloop transport system is the idea of businessman Elon Musk. Dirk Ahlborn is head of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies. He says his company has taken Mr. Musk's idea and is4a system that will be safe, environmentally friendly and fast.

“It's 100 percent solar5. We're not going to get up to 760 miles per hour, but we believe we can actually break the records that exist right now.”

This means that a four-hour drive from Los Angeles, California to Las Vegas, Nevada, could someday take only 30 minutes by Hyperloop.

The system involves a series of capsules that6inside a long tube. These containers would not need to travel along a pathway or track. . The system-has been designed to operate above or below ground.

“Inside the tube you create a low7environment very similar to an airplane that's at high altitudes. So now the capsule travelling inside the tube doesn't meet with as much8, and therefore can travel really fast with very little energy.”

Dirk Ahlborn and his company will use an eight-kilometer track in Quay Valley to find the best way to set up passenger traffic and repair capsules. A larger system will cost a(n)9six to $10 billion to build.

If Mr. Ahlborn and his company succeed, we may one day see these very fast Hyperloop capsules 10through tubes around the world.
