二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、The world’s largest paper airplane in history had a length of 45 ft. It had a wingspan of 24 ft. Its weight was 800 lb.

A 12-year-old boy named Arturo Valdenegro first created this design on a small scale and he won the contest organized by Pima Air & Space Museum. In the contest, children competed with each other to decide whose airplane was the farthest flyer.

A team of the Great Paper Airplane Project decided to build a much larger version of the winning airplane. They initially built a 5-ft model for trial. The trial model for the desert eagle project was fitted together by hand. This was done to determine how well the project design would perform on a grander scale. The next part of the project involved the building of a slightly larger model of the desert eagle. This model was a 15-ft plane. The team experimented with this model on the back of a pickup truck that was moving fast. For the final model, a type of corrugated (波纹状的) cardboard was used.

The team managed to free the airplane with the help of a Sikorsky S-58T helicopter. Initially, it was planned that the paper airplane would be released at a height of 5000 ft. However, some difficulties arose. The airplane was swaying (摇晃) heavily because of the surrounding wind. In this situation, it might be perilous for the helicopter. Thus, it was released at a height of about 2700 ft.

The paper airplane flew a distance of 59 ft. Even at a reduced height, it was able to glide (滑翔) for a period of about 10 seconds. It flew at a speed of at least 100 miles per hour even at a lower height. Although it crashed after that, it was considered a big step forward.

The project was conducted for a reason. It aimed to draw bright young minds to the engineering and the aviation industry (航空业). It seems to have been successful, at least to some extent. Young ones like Valdenegro have shown interest in the industry.

【1】Why did Arturo Valdenergro most probably design the paper airplane?

A.To inspire children to design inventions.

B.To show his talents for paper arts.

C.To make friends with a pilot.

    D.To compete in a contest.

【2】How did the team test the performance of Arturo Valdenegro’s airplane on a larger scale?

A.By comparing with that of the other paper airplanes.

B.By studying Valdenergro’s design for a long periods.

C.By using different types of helicopters.

D.By creating different models for trial.

【3】What does the underlined word “perilous” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?

    A.Unattractive.

    B.Dangerous.

    C.Useless.

    D.Costly.

【4】What is the project expected to do?

A.To fuel young people’s interest in the aviation industry.

B.To remind people of children’s overall development.

C.To popularize basic knowledge of airplanes.

D.To show people the potential use of paper.

  • 27、Robots really are taking over the world. They’re writing novels— the first was 1 the Road, a cyborg’s homage to Jack Kerouac published in 2018. And they’re making lunch: The California restaurant chain Cali Burger is trying out a robot that can flip 2, 000 burgers a day. What human can compete--especially given that robots don’t complain, ask for raises, or get drunk at the office Christmas party?

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the invention of the word robot by the Czech playwright Karel Capek, we thought it would be fun to take a look at another side of robotkind, one that’s all too human. Here’re two failed attempts by robots to replace us flesh-and-bone types.

A few years back, the Hennna Hotel in Nagasaki, Japan, hired 243 robots to cover positions ranging from receptionists to bellboys. Unfortunately, the check-in robots had trouble answering guests’ questions and photocopying passports, while bellboy robots kept banging into walls and tripping over curbs. One in-room assistant sprang to attention every time a lodger snored, saying, “Sorry, I couldn’t catch that. Could you repeat your request?” Not long after the experiment began, the hotel "fired" half of the malfunctioning robots. And they didn’t get their tips, either.

Facial recognition software has one problem— it can’t always recognize faces. The American Civil Liberties Union proved that point when it used the Amazon Rekognition software to match mug shots of criminals to 28 members of Congress. But what about soccer ball recognition? During a match last year, the Scottish soccer team Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC unveiled AI-programmed video cameras designed to automatically follow the ball. Alas, the cameras constantly mistook the referee’s bald head for the soccer ball. One helpful viewer called the team to suggest supplying the referee with a cap.

【1】Why did the hotel fire as many as half of the robots they had hired?

A.Because they cost much more than they earned.

B.Because they didn’t answer their guests’ questions.

C.Because they often disturbed their customers.

D.Because they failed to do their jobs as expected.

【2】What does the underlined word “unveiled” in the fourth paragraph probably mean?

    A.borrowed

    B.introduced

    C.purchased

    D.invented

【3】What did the author take a soccer match as an example to show?

    A.His protest against the cameras.

B.His deep love for soccer matches.

    C.Some failure attempted by robots.

D.The great success achieved by robots.

【4】Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?

    (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2, ③=Paragraph 3, ④=Paragraph 4)

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

  • 28、LONDON — A smart toilet could offer a mini health check every time you take a seat, scientists said recently, but privacy campaigners and potential users said the idea sat uncomfortably with them.

The device would identify users through an anal scan using a camera fitted under the seat before checking their waste for disease markers, including early signs of cancer, says the US-led team who developed the prototype.

“We know it seems strange, but as it turns out, your anal print is unique,” said Sanjiv Gambhir, a radiology professor at Stanford University, who led work on the project. "The smart toilet is the perfect way to make use of a source of data that’s typically ignored,” Gambhir said. “Everyone uses the bathroom - there’s really no avoiding it - and that enhances its value as a disease-detecting device.”

A set of devices fitted inside the toilet bowl identifies the users and monitors their waste for signs of ill health which could be shared with their doctors, researchers said in the scientific journal Nature Biomedical Engineering. Such devices could become common place in homes, said Gambhir, as consumers accept health monitoring tools like smartwatches and internet- connected home devices. But many were concerned about releasing their privacy, the researchers found following a 300-person survey to assess acceptance. Three in ten respondents said they would not want to use a smart toilet, with only about half reporting they would be “somewhat” or “very” comfortable with it. The most commonly reported concerns were over privacy and data security, found researchers, who said information gathered would be stored in a secure, cloud- based system.

Despite those assurances, privacy campaigners expressed fears about security problems. “Health data contains the most sensitive and revealing information about anyone,” said Edin Omanovic, advocacy director at London-based charity Privacy International. “Linking it to someone’s biometric ID risks exposing private details to third parties, either through data sharing or security drawbacks which leave back doors exposed.”

【1】What does this smart toilet use to detect disease?

    A.A smartwatch.

    B.A seat.

    C.A cloud-based system.

    D.A camera.

【2】What can we know about the disease-detecting devices?

    A.They are widely accepted.

B.Gambhir has confidence in their future.

C.Their function has been improved recently.

D.Signs of illness can be removed through them.

【3】What can we infer about health data from the last paragraph?

    A.It should be taken seriously.

    B.It will be treated properly.

C.It may not be shared publicly.

    D.It can be exposed illegally.

【4】Which of the following could be the best title for the text?

A.The use of a smart toilet

B.The value of a smart toilet

    C.A smart toilet without privacy

D.A smart toilet with good intention
