二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、 Children in the United States eat too much pizza that some researchers now argue the food should join the ranks of sugary drinks and fast food for the harm they do to health.

In a new study, the researchers found that pizza is a large source of calories, saturated fat(饱和脂肪)and salt in children’s diets.Children should not eat more than two slices of pizza for a meal.and should pair that with salad, rather than with another high-calorie food, the researchers concluded.

“Parents should aim to control pizza consumption(消费), particularly as a snack where it was shown to have a very adverse impact on children, and they should put their pizza dollars toward healthier brands.” said Lisa Powel, director of the Illinois Prevention Research Center.

Pizza has become a matter of focus in recent years for researchers who look at the meals children eat, rather than the nutrients within them.Studies have found pizza is among the greatest sources of calories for children.

“Since pizza remains a common part of children’s diet, we need to make ‘healthy’ pizza.”Powel said.To make pizza healthier, food producers should reduce its saturated fat and salt, and increase its whole grain content, she said.

Whether or not pizza is harmful enough to be picked out as an unhealthy food, the study attracts attention to a larger issue with the modern American lifestyle, said Alexis Tindall, who was not involved in the flow research. Many foods arc eaten too frequently and in large sizes.said Tindall. To solve the problem, people don’t have to give up eating pizza, but instead, they can eat smaller and healthier pizza, she said.

“Make it at home, instead of ordering it out where you don’t have any control over how it’s made.”Tindall said. “When we make it at home, we can choose healthier ingredients, increase the vegetables.reduce fat, and put in less cheese.Pizza doesn’t have to be just pepperoni(意大利辣香肠)and cheese.”

    【1】According to the research.children shouldn’t eat

A.more than two slices of pizza in a day

B.two slices of pizza for a meal

    C.more pizza with French fries

    D.pizza along with salad

【2】Powel suggests healthier pizza should be made

A.with less salt    B.with more ingredients

    C.in smaller sizes D.at home

【3】The last sentence of the passage implies that pepperoni and cheese

A.are not necessary ingredients of pizza

B.should be reduced by adding healthier ingredients.

C.should all be replaced with healthier ingredient.

D.are not the only healthy ingredients of pizza

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

    A.Pizza—a real junk food!

B.How to prepare better meals for your kids?

C.Bring in healthier pizza for Americans

  • 22、   The quality of patience goes a long way toward your goal of creating a more peaceful and loving self. The more patient you are, the more accepting you will be of what life is, rather than insisting that life be exactly as you would like it to be. Without patience, life is extremely frustrating. 【1】Patience adds some ease and acceptance to your life. It's important for inner peace.

【2】If you are stuck in a traffic jam, late for an appointment, being patient would mean keeping yourself from building a mental snowball before your thinking gets out of hand and gently reminding yourself to relax. It might also be a good time to breathe as well as an opportunity to remind yourself that, in the bigger scheme of things, being late is "small stuff".

Patience is a quality of heart that can be greatly enhanced with deliberate practice. 【3】 They are the periods of time that I set up in my mind to practice the art of patience. Life itself becomes a classroom, and the curriculum is patience. You can start with as little as five minutes and build up your capacity for patience over time. What you'll discover is truly amazing. Your intention to be patient, especially if you know it's only for a short while, immediately strengthens your capacity for patience. Patience is one of those qualities where success feeds on itself. Once you reach little milestone-five minutes of successful patience-you'll begin to see that you do indeed have the capacity to be patient, even for longer periods of time. Over time, you may even become a patient person.

Being patient will help you to keep your perspective. You will see even a difficult situation, say your present challenge, isn't "life or death" but simply a minor obstacle that must be dealt with.【4】.

A.An effective way that I have found to deepen my own patience is to create actual practice periods.

B.You are more easily annoyed and bothered.

C.It is generally believed that the quality of being patient is very difficult to develop.

D.Becoming more patient involves opening your heart to the present moment, even if you don't like it.

E.Without patience, you will see the same scene as an emergency complete with yelling, frustration, hurt feelings.

F.If you lack patience, you are destined to fail in what you are pursuing.

  • 23、In 2008, Michael Goodfellow, a scientist at Newcastle University, was handed a soil sample taken from Chile’s Atacama Desert—the world’s driest desert, once considered a dead zone. “Quite frankly, we didn’t expect to isolate (使分离) anything,” Goodfellow admits. But to his surprise, he was able to grow a diversity of bacteria from the sample.

A 2018 review counted a total of 46 new molecules (分子) that have been isolated from the Atacama bacteria so far, many of which show antibiotic (抗菌的), antiviral or anticancer properties (特征). It was the type of bacteria living in the Atacama that proved particularly exciting: actinobacteria (放线菌).

Take streptomyces griseus for example, a species of actinobacteria you might find in soil. A sample of streptomyces, when placed among mycobacterium tuberculosis (结核杆菌), will release a chemical which stops its bacterial neighbors from growing the proteins they need to survive. When scientists at Rutgers University managed to isolate this chemical in 1944, they accidentally found the first antibiotic treatment for tuberculosis, saving countless lives.

Today, there is general agreement on the need for the development of new antibiotics because our most trusted drugs began to fail—bacteria have learnt how to survive our antibiotic attacks. Sometimes, a potentially useful chemical can be found right in environments around us. But many scientists argue that we should also be exploring the natural world for novel biochemistry, an approach known as “bioprospecting”.

“70% to 75% of all antibiotics come from nature,” notes Marcel Jaspars, a natural product chemist at the University of Aberdeen. “It strikes me that we should be looking more deeply into how nature makes these molecules and how we can actually find antibiotics.”

【1】What did Goodfellow think of the sample at first?

    A.It was lifeless.

    B.It was man-made.

    C.It was of great value.

    D.It was of doubtful origin.

【2】Why does the author mention scientists’ achievement in 1944?

A.To compare two species of actinobacteria.

B.To explain the major cause of tuberculosis.

C.To explain the purpose of antibiotic treatments.

D.To show the potential of the Atacama actinobacteria.

【3】Which of the following best describes Jaspars’ attitude to “bioprospecting”?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Supportive.

    C.Tolerant.

    D.Conservative.

【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A.Antibiotics are bound to fail.

    B.Effective treatments come from nature.

C.Fun facts are listed about the Atacama Desert.

D.The desert soil could save lives.

  • 24、A new guidebook showcasing Hainan, China’s southernmost province, to English-speaking readers was launched on Sept. 9 at The Commercial Press head office in Beijing.

Produced by the award-winning international team of writers and editors behind The World of Chinese, this book Hainan: Jade Cliffs to Ocean Paradise dives deep into the natural, cultural and humanistic sides of an island lately associated with retirees and real estate.

“Most travel guides stop at telling you where and how to visit,” said Chu Dandan, chief editor of The World of Chinese, at the book’s launch event. “Our book tells you why you should visit.” What moves readers are “more than just sea and coconuts,” Chu said, “but the people and the stories in between.”

From Hainan’s famous beach resorts to its backcountry interior, the book’s writers went across the province in search of little-told tales — trekking(跋涉) up its primeval(原始的) hills and through its rainforests, sipping tea and coffee with locals, visiting the homes of fishermen and ethnic minorities and discovering the passions of marine archaeologists, conservationists and surfers.

These personal experiences and first-hand conversations are reflected in each of the book’s chapters on Hainan’s ecology, history, culture, leisure, food, sports and economy. These topics are then brought to life by original photographs, hand-drawn maps, interviews with naive authors and scholars and profiles(轮廓) on colorful individuals and communities.

“One of the things I was not expecting to find was a quaint little fishing village. Inevitably, modern elements permeate(渗透) the beauty of ancient elegance. The village has been quietly half-occupied by a growing modern surfing community,” Sam Davies, one of the writers, told the audience about visiting the village of Houhai in Sanya.

“I was able to talk to some locals and others about how the village has changed, what it has meant for people’s lives, and how surfing is just starting to develop in China,” Davies said.

“Our aim is to create something that will go far,” Gu Qing, general secretary of The Commercial Press, said at the book launch. “I believe Hainan’s development will exceed even the predictions in this book, and we hope this book and Hainan will go out into the world together.”

For more information about the book, please leave messages below.
