二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Alan Naiman was known for being very careful about how he spent his money. But even those closest to him had no knowledge of the fortune he quietly gathered and the last act he had planned.

Naiman died of cancer at age 63 last January. The man from the American state of Washington gave most of his money to groups that help the poor, sick, disabled and abandoned children.

He gave them $11 million. The large amount of his fortune shocked the groups that received his gifts and even his best friends. That is because Naiman had been known to repair his own shoes with duct tape. He had sought deals to buy food from grocery stores at closing time and taken friends out to lunch at low cost restaurants.

Naiman died unmarried and childless. He loved children but also was intensely private. He saved, invested and worked extra jobs to gather money. He rarely spent the money on himself after seeing how unfair life could be for children who suffer most.

Naiman was a former banker who worked for the past 20 years at the state Department of Social and Health Services. He earned $67,234 a year and also took on side jobs. Sometimes, he worked as many as three at a time. He saved and invested enough to make several millions of dollars. He also received millions more from his parents after they died.

He left $2.5 million to the Pediatric Interim Care Center in Washington. The center is a private organization that cares for babies born to mothers who abused drugs and children with drug dependency. The center used the money to pay off its mortgage (按揭) and buy a new vehicle to transport the children.

Naiman gave $900, 000 to the Treehouse, where children without parents can choose toys and necessities for free. Treehouse is using Naiman’s money to expand its college and career support services Statewide.

1Why were Naiman’s best friends shocked at his donation?

    A. He left nothing to his relatives.

    B. He was dishonest in his economic conditions.

    C. He received wealth from his parents secretly.

    D. He used to be very careful to spend money.

2Naiman was greatly concerned about _________.

    A. his money B. his career

    C. children in trouble D. life after retirement

3What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?

    A. Why Naiman’s parents turned rich.

    B. Where Naiman’s fortune came from.

    C. How hard Naiman worked all his life.

    D. How clever Naiman was to gather money.

4How did Naiman’s money benefit the Pediatric Interim Care Center?

    A. It improved its transport system.

    B. It offered more toys to children.

    C. It sent more children to college.

    D. It helped more women give up drugs.

  • 22、   Prosocial behaviors are those intended to help other people. Behaviors that can be described as prosocial include feeling empathy(同感) and concern for others and behaving in ways to help or benefit other people.

Prosocial behavior has long posed a challenge to social scientists seeking to understand why people engage in helping behaviors that are beneficial to others, but costly to the individual performing the action. Why would people do something that benefits someone else but offers no immediate benefit to the doer?

Psychologists suggest that there are a number of reasons why people engage in prosocial behavior. In many cases, such behaviors are fostered during childhood and adolescence as adults encourage children to share, act kindly, and help others. Prosocial behaviors are often seen as being compelled by a number of factors including egoistic reasons (doing things to improve one's self-image), reciprocal benefits (doing something nice for someone so that they may one day return the favor), and more altruistic reasons (performing actions purely out of empathy for another individual).

Characteristics of the situation can also have a powerful impact on whether or not people engage in prosocial actions. For example, if you drop your purse and several items fall out on  the ground, the likelihood that someone will stop and help you decreases if there are many other people present. This same sort of thing can happen in cases where someone is in serious danger, such as when someone is involved in a car accident. In some cases, witnesses might assume that since there are so many other present, someone else will have surely already called for help. All the examples are what we call the bystander effect, the tendency for people to become less likely to assist a person in distress when there are a number of other people also present.

Why do people help in some situations but not in others? Experts have discovered a number of different situational variables that contribute to (and sometimes interfere with) prosocial behaviors. First, the more people that are present decreases the amount of personal responsibility people feel in a situation. People also tend to look to others for how to respond in such situations, particularly if the event contains some level of ambiguity. Fear of being judged by other members of the group also plays a  role. People  sometimes fear leaping to  assistance,  only  to discover that their help was unwanted or unwarranted. In order to avoid being judged by other bystanders, people simply take no action.

Experts have suggested that some key things must happen in order for a person to take action.

1What can we learn from paragraph 2?

A.Social scientists feel it hard to understand why helping behaviors exist.

B.Helping behaviors are costly to people who receive the action.

C.Social scientists have been researching on prosocial behavior for quite long.

D.It is quite challenging for people to perform helping behaviors.

2Prosocial behaviors are motivated for all the following reasons EXCEPT ______.

A.empathy for another individual B.instant benefits of helping others

C.parental influences in the early life D.the desire to better one's self-image

3Why does the author use the examples in paragraph 4?

A.To show that some people are in need of immediate help.

B.To indicate that some people think their help is not needed.

C.To suggest that some people perform helping behaviors quickly.

D.To demonstrate how the situation can impact helping behaviors.

4Which situation can be described as the bystander effect?

A.When hearing an injured lady crying for help, the neighbors didn't take action.

B.Seeing an old man slipping on the icy road, many people volunteered to help.

C.A woman had a heart attack on the train and you were the only doctor there.

D.On the scene of your colleague's traffic accident, you called the police for help.

5After the last paragraph, the most possible topic could be ______.

    A.possible benefits of prosocial behavior

    B.various reasons for prosocial behavior

    C.situational influences on prosocial behavior

D.skills and knowledge to provide assistance

  • 24、Our supposedly shrinking attention spans are a hot topic these days—as you may have seen on TV or heard on a podcast or read on Twitter or glimpsed on your watch. A 2018 Microsoft report claimed the average human attention span had shrunk from 12 seconds in 2008 to eight seconds in 2018 (even shorter than the nine seconds of focus maintained by the easily distracted goldfish), most likely on its way to zero.

Yes, this sort of warning is as old as the hills. An 1897 article in The American Electrician worried that a growing dependence on the telephone would turn us all into “transparent heaps of jelly”. But while the idea of addiction to smartphones is controversial, numerous studies have found that compulsive phone use can lead to separation anxiety, chronic fear of missing out and a painful thumb condition.

Yet blaming smart phones for our distraction feels too easy—human attention has always been fleeting. A study conducted several years before the first iPhone was released found that workers spent an average of just two minutes using a particular tool or document before switching to another. Moreover, interruptions may have an advantage. Many workers who prevented themselves from distraction by website-blocking software became more aware of time’s passage and were able to work for longer stretches—but also reported higher stress levels as a result of their sustained focus.

For those seeking to exercise greater control over their attention span, science has some suggestions. A 2016 study found that mindfulness meditation (正念冥想) led to short-term improvements in attention, and that the long-term benefits of frequent mindfulness were significantly large among heavy multimedia multitaskers.

Ultimately, it’s worth asking: How long do we really want our attention span to be? A little mindfulness can be beneficial, while too much sustained focus can elevate our stress levels. What’s lacking these days, then, may not be attention so much as self-control in the face of countless distractions that are inviting and diverting (有趣的). In the end, it seems like our only hope as a people, as a civilization, really, is to... to, um—sorry. Lost my train of thought.

【1】What does the author want to tell us by referring to The American Electrician?

A.Humans will be reduced to be heaps of jelly.

B.Smartphone is the contributor to mental diseases.

C.Anxiety over electronic devices has existed long before.

D.New media create a serious disturbance to people’s attention.

【2】What does the underlined word “fleeting” refer to?

    A.Easily-blocked.

    B.Hard-bitten.

    C.Short-lived.

    D.Long-lasting.

【3】Which of the following may extend our attention span?

    A.Heavy multitasks on websites.

    B.Regular mindfulness practice.

    C.Greater control over meditation.

    D.Short-term improvements in focus.

【4】What can be learned from the last paragraph?

    A.Short-term mindfulness is more practical.

B.Great self-control is essential in modern life.

C.Sustained focus results from higher stress levels.

D.He was very sorry for losing his train of thought.
