21、Tech giants Apple and Google are teaming up to create a system that would let smart phone users know when they’ve come into contact with someone who has COVID-19.
The technology would rely on the Bluetooth signals that smart phones can both send out and receive. If a person tests positive (阳性) for COVID-19, they could inform public health authorities through an app. Those public heath apps would then warm anyone whose smart phones had come near the infected person’s phone in the previous 14 days. The technology could be used on both Google Android phones and Apple iPhones.
The companies insist that they will preserve smart phone users’ privacy and their technology will be used only by public health authorities to trace the spread of COV1D-19. Smart phone users can choose to use it. The software will not collect data on users’ physical locations or their personally identifiable information. People who test positive would remain unknown to the public, both to the people who came in contact with them and to Apple and Google. “Privacy is of greatest importance in this effort,” the companies said in a joint statement.
The American Civil Liberties Union has warned that using cellphone data to handle the pandemic carries risks of “destruction of privacy”. In a statement on Friday, ACLU cyber security counsel Jennifer Granick said, “The system also can’t work well if people don’t trust it”. She said that the joint Apple and Google project “appears to reduce the worst privacy risks, but there is still room for improvement.” She added that the contact tracing app should be used only for public health purposes and only for the duration of this pandemic.
Public health officials say the contact tracing—finding people who have been in contact with an infected person will be a key step in lifting shelter-in-place restrictions.
It would allow people who are known to have been exposed to the virus to isolate themselves, while letting others recover normal activities.

22、The remains of a gold mask are among a huge quantity of 3,000-year-old artifacts (文物) found at an archaeological (考古的) site in China’s Sichuan province.
Weighing about 280 grams and estimated to be made from 84% gold, the ceremonial mask is one of over 500 items unearthed from six newly discovered “sacrificial pits” (祭祀坑), according to the country’s National Cultural Heritage Administration.
The finds were made at Sanxingdui, a 4.6-square-mile area outside the provincial capital of Chengdu. Some experts say the items may shine further light on the ancient Shu state, a kingdom that ruled in the western Sichuan basin before 316 BC.
In addition to the gold mask, archaeologists uncovered bronzes (青铜器) and artifacts made from other materials such as bone. The six pits also contained an as-yet-unopened wooden box and a bronze container with owl-shaped patterning.
More than 50,000 ancient artifacts have been found at Sanxingdui since the 1920s, when a local farmer accidentally came upon some remains at the site. A major breakthrough occurred in 1986, with the discovery of two ceremonial pits containing over 1,000 items, including delicate and well-preserved bronze masks. Discoveries made at the site date back to the 12th and 11th centuries BC.
Sanxingdui has completely revolutionized experts’ understanding of how civilization developed in ancient China. In particular, evidence of a unique Shu culture suggests that the kingdom developed independently of neighboring societies in the Yellow River Valley, which was traditionally considered to be the birthplace of Chinese civilization.
Though not yet recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sanxingdui is on the organization’s list for possible future inclusion. Along with other Shu archaeological sites, it is credited by the UN agency as “an outstanding representative of the Bronze Age Civilization of China, East Asia and even the world.”

23、Courage is a highly admired virtue. When asked to describe courage, most people think of an individual running into a burning building, or maybe a hero saving the world. But there’s another form of bravery. It’s much more important because it comes up more often.【1】.
Moral courage is the ability that allows us to face our fears and to conquer our darkest fears. It’s the ability to face the future without knowing what is certain. It’s the ability to stand tall and confront those who oppose us and those who prevent us from realizing who we are and what we are.【2】, even though there are risks that stand in your way. Sara Anderson once said,” It takes great courage to faithfully follow what we know to be true.”
【3】. It was because of moral courage that Mahatma Gandhi was able to make India free from the British rule. He fought bravely against them without the use of any weapon by presenting great moral courage. In this way, he also became a great example for the people of the whole world. It is not that we remember Gandhi because of his body or beauty. 【4】.
Moral courage is essential not only for a noble life, but a happy one. Without moral courage, we have no control over our lives. Our fears destroy our spirit and make us trapped in depression. Mark Twain said, “Courage is not the absence of fear but the resistance to fear and the mastery (控制) of fear.” If our fears cause us to lose confidence in the power of virtue, we will lose something very precious.

24、Last September, Dobbs Ferry School District joined a small but growing number of schools around the US that have started pushing back their middle and high school start times in an effort to prevent students from being groggy.
Dr. Lisa Brady, the head teacher of the schools, tells Business Insider that in the past 2015-16 school year, middle school started at 8:15 a.m. and high school at 7:30 a.m. Under the new policy, each school now starts and ends 45 minutes later. Both schools have benefited a lot, Brady says.
Following a survey at the end of the school year, Brady says “it was clear from both the parents and the kids, that the mornings were just less stressful.”
Many of the kids reported having more time to eat breakfast and get ready for school, while parents said they didn’t have to drag kids out of bed or yell at them to hurry up. Once students got to school, they felt more active. At night, they tended to go to bed at the same time, even though the new schedule leaves them an extra 45 minutes.
Tony is also a math teacher, and he says, kids seem more relaxed now in the campus and his students already produce better work steadily, even though the schedule just a month old. Around the campus, kids seem more relaxed now that they’re not juggling as much work as early in the day.
Negative responses to later start times are rare, but they do happen.
Brady says some parents at Dobbs Ferry have found it harder to complete the necessary morning routines and get to work on time. Meanwhile, Tony says the problem for school is finding enough buses for kids. And some students say once they finally get home, many say they have less time for all the homework they’ve been assigned.
