21、Teenagers around the world are familiar with the great pain of boredom. And every parent is familiar with the sounds of groaning (咕哝的) kids, sulking (生闷气) in their room or pacing aimlessly around the house. But sometimes, it’s this very sense of boredom that can inspire creativity and create fast-growing trends.
This is true for pickleball (匹克球), now a popular sport in the West. According to the Mental Floss website, the sport was invented in the summer of 1965. At that time, Frank Pritchard, 13, had nothing to do in his family’s summer home in Washington, US. After complaining loudly, his father, Joel, suggested he make up a game. When Frank replied “Why don’t you?” his father gladly took up the challenge. Thus, pickleball was born.
Certain parts of tennis, badminton and ping-pong can be seen from pickleball. It’s a bat game played on a badminton-sized court with what looks like a wiffle ball (威浮球) over a low net. Only the serving team can score points, and all serves must be made with an underhand stroke (击球).
The popularity of pickleball has grown steadily over the last decade. According to Mental Floss, the number of pickleball courts has grown by an estimated 385 percent worldwide since 2010. One reason for its popularity is that it’s “a sport for everyone”. Anyone can play pickleball because it’s relatively easy to pick up. There are simple rules, and all people need is a couple of bats and a ball, which is affordable and accessible to all. Plus, pickleball is a sport centered around fun and friendship. The game lasts as short as 15 minutes, which means less running and stress for players.
Pritchard said that the game’s rapid rise in popularity was amazing, especially considering that a bad-tempered kid “inspired a sports craze by making a stink (吵闹) about being bored one afternoon 56 years ago”.
【1】What do we know about pickleball, according to the passage?

22、 Six Neanderthals who lived in what is now France were eaten by their fellow Neanderthals some 100,000 years ago, according to fearful evidence of the cannibalistic (食人的) event discovered by scientists in a cave in the 1990s. Now, researchers may have figured out why the Neanderthals , including two children , became victims of cannibalism (食人):Global warming.
While previous studies have examined Neanderthal remains to find proof of cannibalistic behavior, this is the first study to offer clues as to what may have led Neanderthals to become cannibals. Scientists found that rapid changes in local ecosystems as the planet warmed may have wiped out the animal species that Neanderthals ate, forcing them to look elsewhere to fill their stomachs.
The researchers examined a layer of sediment (沉积物) in a cave known as Baume Moula-Guercy, in southeastern France. In that layer , charcoal (碳)and animal bones were so well-preserved that scientists could reconstruct an environmental picture representing 120,000 to 130,000 years ago. They discovered that the climate in the area was likely even warmer than it is today , and that the change from a cold ,dry climate to a warmer one happened quickly .Maybe within a few generations, “study co-author Emmanuel said. As the animals that once populated the landscape disappeared, some Neanderthals ate what they could find-their neighbors.
Cannibalism is by no means unique to Neanderthals, and has been practiced by humans and their relatives “from the early Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age and beyond,” the study authors reported. The behavior adopted by the starving Neanderthals in the Baume Moula-Guercy should therefore not be viewed as “a mark of bestiality(兽性)or sub-humanity ”, but as an emergency adaptation to a period of severe environmental stress, according to the study. The findings were published in the April issue of the Journal of Archaeological Science.
【1】What does the study mainly focus on?
A.The social behavior of Neanderthals.
B.The climate change in southeastern France.
C.The reason for cannibalism among Neanderthals.
D.The influence of global warming on ancient animals.
【2】What was the climate possibly like in southeastern France 120,000 to 130,000 years ago?
A.It was cold and dry all the time.
B.It was first cold, dry and later warm.
C.It was first warm and later cold, dry.
D.It was warm all the time.
【3】Which of the following might the study authors agree with?
A.Neanderthals’cannibalism showed their bestiality.
B.Climate change drove some Neanderthals to cannibalism.
C.Neanderthals’cannibalism guaranteed their rule over other tribes.
D.Only Neanderthals were found to have cannibalism in human history.
23、Death is natural, but do you have any idea of the process of dying? Modern scientists divide the process of dying into two phases --- clinical or temporary death and biological death.Clinical death occurs when the vital organs, such as the heart or lungs, have ceased to function, but have not suffered permanent damage. The organism can still be revived(复活).Biological death occurs when changes in the organism lead to the “breaking up” of vital cells and tissues.Death is then unchangeable and final.
Scientists have been seeking a way to prolong the period of clinical death so that the organism can remain alive before biological death occurs. The best method developed so far involves cooling of the organism, combined with narcotic sleep.By slowing down the body’s metabolism(新陈代谢), cooling delays the processes leading to biological death.
To illustrate how this works, scientists performed an experiment on a six-year-old female monkey called Keta. The scientist put Keta to sleep with a narcotic. Then they surrounded her body with ice-bags and began checking her body temperature. When it had dropped to 28 degrees the scientists began draining blood from an artery. The monkey’s blood pressure decreased and an hour later both the heart and breathing stopped: clinical death set in.For twenty minutes Keta remained in this state. Her temperature dropped to 22 degrees. At this point the scientists pumped blood into an artery in the direction of the heart and started artificial breathing. After two minutes Keta’s heart became active once more. After fifteen minutes, spontaneous(自发的)breathing began, and after four hours Keta opened her eyes and lifted her head. After six hours, when the scientists tried to give her a penicillin injection, Keta seized the syringe and ran with it around the room. Her behavior differed little from that of a healthy animal.
【1】For a person who suffers from the clinical death, _________.
A. his most important organs are damaged.
B. he still has the possibility of getting back to life.
C. he can not avoid final death.
D. he is still very much alive
【2】Scientists try to make the time of clinical death longer in order to __________.
A. slow down the body’s metabolism.
B. bring vital cells and tissues back to active life.
C. cool the organism.
D. delay the coming of biological death.
【3】 How did the scientists put Keta into clinical death?
A. By putting her to sleep, lowering her temperature and draining her blooD.
B. By surrounding her body with ice-bags and draining her blood.
C. By lowing her blood pressure and stopping her heart from beating.
D. By draining her blood, lowering her blood pressure and stopping her breathing.
【4】 All of the following indicate that the monkey has almost restored to her original physical state except the fact that__________.
A. her heart beat again.
B. she regained her normal breath.
C. she rejected a penicillin injection.
D. she acted as lively as a healthy monkey.
24、The moon hasn’t had an easy time over the years. Since the beginning of the solar system 4.5 billion years ago, its gray and lifeless surface has been repeatedly hit by space rocks, leaving behind a landscape full of broken stones. Beneath this surface, however, hide the moon’s most attracting secrets for human explorers, from a large amount of ice for producing drinking water to rocket fuel. More importantly, mapping the moon’s subsurface can show some hidden periods of solar system history. This is confirmed by fresh results from a Chinese rover (月球车).
The latest results come from the Chang’e-4 mission, run by the China National Space Administration. Launched in December 2018 and reaching the moon in early January 2019, the mission became the first to land on the far side of the natural satellite, targeting a region near the lunar south pole called the South Pole-Aitken Basin. The Chang’e-4 rover is still operational today and has been slowly moving across this region, traveling a few hundred meters since it landed.
Using a radar instrument on Chang’e-4, researchers have found that the rover is likely sitting on different layers of ejecta ( 喷 出 物 ) and a very clear order of layers can be seen. The rover’s radar instrument was able to enter up to 40 meters below the surface of the moon, more than twice the distance achieved by the former, the Chang’e-3 mission, which landed on the moon near side in December 2013. Data from the latest mission show three different layers beneath the rover. It is not currently possible to date the layers under Chang’e-4. But they do provide some information about lunar history dating back about four billion years.
The rover is continuing to move across the surface, making regular stops to take measurements and use its instruments.
【1】What is the most important purpose of human’s exploration of the moon?
A.To seek fresh drinking water.
B.To find hidden rocket fuel.
C.To study different layers of ejecta.
D.To uncover the hidden history of solar system.
【2】What do we know about the the Chang’e-4 mission?
