二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Deep in a forest of France’s Burgundy region, a group of enthusiasts have been building a castle with tools and methods from the late 13th century since 1995. Some of those working here are very skilled heritage people, and others are history lovers. But all of them share a deep respect for nature and a desire to return to simpler times.

The idea to build the castle was born in 1995 among three residents of the region. One of them, Maryline Martin, owns a nearby 17th-century house and is involved in work to restore different castles in the area.

“We thought that it would be amazing to imitate (模仿) how people did things in the past,” Martin tells public radio station France Culture. “We decided to use other ancient castles in this area as examples and get inspiration from descriptions in old books.”

On the construction site, the workers are all dressed in ancient clothing. The smell of fire is coming from a nearby blacksmith’s shop, where 20-year-old Matisse Lacroix is burning a piece of iron in a stove to make tools needed to build the castle.

“The temperature in the stove is around 1100℃, so the iron can be softened to make these nails,” Lacroix explains to a group of fourth-graders, who are watching him bending and shaping the iron into nails.

“Part of the project’s mission is to rediscover and pass along skills and knowledge from the past,” Martin tells reporters. “That learning aspect of the project is one reason why its construction is taking so long.”

Initially, the project was funded by European Union. Now it is financed through more than 300,000 visitors a year who pay between 12 and 15 euros each. The income is more than enough to cover the construction costs and payments for the 100 staff members.

As for the project’s future, Martin says it could take 10, 15, or even 20 more years to build. “But we’re OK with that. It’s not about finishing the project. It’s about the things we learn and discover while building,” he says. “I believe the way we’re working here is more sustainable. The future is low tech.”

【1】Which of the following best describes the castle-builders?

    A.Famous historians.

    B.Enthusiastic conservationists.

    C.Housing developers.

    D.Professional heritage researchers.

【2】What is the third paragraph mainly about?

    A.Maryline Martin’s background.

    B.The project’s influence.

    C.The inspirations for the project.

    D.The history of the castle.

【3】Why has it taken so long to build the castle?

A.The owners don’t have enough money.

B.The workers don’t have proper equipment.

C.The French authorities fail to provide timely support.

D.The participants want to explore the ancient building skills.

    【4】What is Maryline Martin’s attitude to high-tech?

    A.Skeptical.

    B.Unclear.

    C.Approving.

    D.Objective.

  • 22、Comfort is comforting, but it might narrow our experience at work — and beyond.

In our modern world, discomfort is considered a terrible thing. If not terrible, at least a thing of the past. Dishwashers, washing machines, computers, remote controls—yes, they add convenience, but also a level of comfort our forefathers did not enjoy.

As pain of any kind discourages happiness, we tend to reason, anything that compromises our ability to feel good must be bad. And that’s also particularly true for our careers. Success makes us feel great, not terrible. Such a view, however, is a matter of personal opinion. And it may blind us to hidden opportunities.

Artists throughout history have tried to experience suffering, instinctively if not consciously, to produce works that explore the darker hidden sides of the human condition. This was done, in part, because pain is a reality of life for everybody in some form at some time. Pain is something everybody can relate to. And pain makes a person very present. For such artists, to relieve or to deny pain would be to block the creative thinking, which drives them to explore and express. In fact, Germans have a term for this melancholia, “Weltschmerz”, which means “suffering from the world.” Writers, from Lord Byron to Kurt Vonnegut, have used the term to describe the psychological pain encountered along life’s roller-coaster journey. It was not to be avoided; it was to be understood, investigated and employed.

So I propose that discomfort is good for us. Or, put another way, it tells us that something needs to be addressed. It stretches us by forcing us to view our circumstances through a wholly different lens. Because we’re drawn to safety and security, we do our best to create pleasant comfort zones for ourselves and our loved ones through the cars we drive, the homes we live in, and the places we work. But by resisting discomfort, we deny ourselves an important opportunity: the chance to shake ourselves out of our predictable perspectives and allow ourselves to make knowledgeable observations we could not possibly have made before. Discomfort gives us fresh eyes.

【1】Which of the following is NOT a reason why artists throughout history have been exploring sufferings?

    A. Pain is a mirror that can reflect the life of everybody.

    B. Pain is something that no one can escape from.

    C. Pain can help them to avoid the creative thinking.

    D. Pain can strengthen the feeling of existence of a person.

【2】The term “Weltschmerz” couldn’t be used to describe something like __________.

    A. social inequality B. mass killings

    C. racial discrimination  D. great achievements

【3】The author believes that by challenging discomfort, one may _________.

    A. lose an important chance to make a big fortune

    B. feel upset and fail to think calmly

    C. judge and think about the world in a new particular way

    D. control the situation properly when things go unsteady

【4】By writing this passage, the author tries to __________.

    A. criticize a world full of comfort

    B. explain why discomfort is good for us

    C. persuade people to lead a life full of discomfort

    D. blame those who enjoy an easy life

  • 23、Women are still underrepresented in top academic positions. One of the possible explanations for this is the increasing importance of obtaining research funding. Women are often less successful in this than men. Psychology researchers Dr. Romy van der Lee and professor Naomi Ellemers investigated whether this difference also occurs at the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and examined potential explanations.

The researchers were assigned by NWO to carry out this study as part of the broader evaluation of NWO’s procedures and its gender diversity policy. The aim was to gain more insight into the causes of the differences in awarding rates for male and female applicants for research funding. The analysis addressed an important “talent programme” of NWO, the Veni grant. “Whoever receives this grant has a greater chance of obtaining an important appointment at a university, ” says Naomi Ellemers.

Van der Lee and Ellemers investigated all the applications submitted by male and female researchers over a period of three years: a total of 2823 applications. Under the direction of NWO these applications were assessed by scientific committees consisting of men and women. The results demonstrate that the awarding rates for female applicants (14.9%) are systematically lower than those for male applicants (17.7%). “If we compare the proportion of women among the applicants with the proportion of women among those awarded funding, we see a loss of 4%,” said Ellemers.

The study reveals that women are less positively evaluated for their qualities as researcher than men are, “Interestingly the research proposals of women and men are evaluated equally positively. In other words, the reviewers see no difference in the quality of the proposals that men and women submit,” says Romy van der Lee.

In search for a possible cause for the differences in awarding rates and evaluations, the researchers also investigated the language use in the instructions and forms used to assess the quality of applications. This clearly revealed the occurrence of gendered language. The words that are used to indicate quality are frequently words that were established in previous research as referring mainly to the male gender stereotype (such as challenging and excellent). Romy van der Lee explains: “As a result, it appears that men more easily satisfy the assessment criteria, because these better fit the characteristics stereoty-pically associated with men.”

In response to the results of this research, NWO will devote more attention to the gender awareness of reviewers in its methods and procedures. It will also be investigated which changes to the assessment procedures and criteria can most strongly contribute to more equal chances for men and women to obtain research funding. This will include an examination of the language used by NWO. NWO chair Jos Engelens said, “The research has yielded valuable results and insights. Based on the recommendations made by the researchers we will therefore focus in the coming period on the development of evidence-based measures to reduce the difference in awarding rates.”

【1】Van der Lee and Ellemers carried out the research to find out whether _________.

A.women are less successful than men in top academic positions

B.female applicants are at a disadvantage in getting research funding

C.NOW’s procedures and gender diversity policy enhance fair play

D.there are equal chances for men and women to be admitted to a university

【2】Van der Lee and Ellemers’ study shows that _________.

A.grant receivers were more likely to get appointments at universities

B.men applicants for research funding outnumbered women applicants

C.the research proposals of women are equally treated with those of men

D.the reviewers have narrow, prejudiced conceptions of women candidates

【3】What might be the main cause for the differences in awarding rates and evaluations?

A.The words used in the instructions and forms.

    B.The reviewers’ preference to applications.

C.The methods and procedures for evaluation.

D.The vague and unclear assessment criteria.

【4】What will NWO probably do next in response to the results of this research?

A.Eliminate possibilities for difference in awarding rates.

B.Design a language examination for all the reviewers.

C.Emphasize the importance of gender awareness.

D.Improve the assessment procedures and criteria.

  • 24、Energy independence has a nice ring to it.Doesn’t it? If you think so, you’re not alone, because energy independence has been the dream of American president for decades, and never more so than in the past few years, when the most recent oil price shock has been partly responsible for kicking off the great recession.

Energy independence” and its rhetorical (修辞的) companion “energy security” are, however, slippery concepts that are rarely though through. What is it we want independence from, exactly?

Most people would probably say that they want to be independent from imported oil.But there are reasons that we buy all that old from elsewhere.

The first reason is that we need it to keep our economy running.Yes, there is a trickle(涓涓细流)of biofuel(生物燃料)available, and more may become available, but most biofuels cause economic waste and environmental destruction.

Second, Americans have basically decided that they don’t really want to produce all their own oil. They value the environmental quality they preserve over their oil imports from abroad.Vast areas of the United States are off-limits to oil exploration and production in the name of environmental protection. To what extent are Americans really willing to endure the environmental impacts of domestic energy production in order to cut back imports?

Third, there are benefits to trade. It allows for economic efficiency, and when we buy things from places that have lower production costs than we do, we benefit. And although you don’t read about this much, the United States is also a large exporter of oil products, selling about 2 million barrels of petroleum products per day to about 90 countries.

There is no question that the United States imports a great deal of energy and, in fact, relies on that steady flow to maintain its economy. When that flow is interrupted, we feel the pain in short supplies and higher pricesAt the same time, we obtain massive economic benefits when we buy the most affordable energy on the world market and when we engage in energy trade around the world.

【1】What does the author say about energy independence for America?

    AIt sounds very attractive.

    BIt ensures national security.

CIt will bring oil prices down

DIt has long been everyone’s dream.

【2】Why does America rely heavily on oil imports?

AIt wants to expand its storage of crude oil(原油).

BIts own oil reserves are quickly running out.

CIt wants to keep its own environment undamaged.

DIts own oil production falls short of demand.

【3】What does the author say about oil trade?

AIt proves profitable to both sides.

    BIt improves economic efficiency.

    CIt makes for economic prosperity.

DIt saves the cost of oil exploration.
