二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Today is National Superhero Day, according to the Marvel universe. But the everyday heroes covered by Newsweek don’t wear capes(斗篷)or feature in Marvel films.

National Superhero Day is so popular after the Twitter page for Vought International posted an image of the Soldier Boy character in a World War II uniform. According to the fictional story, a 1945 order was drafted to make April 28 “Soldier Boy Day”, but the character humbly changed it to “National Superhero Day”.

In reality, the annual occasion was created by Marvel Comics employees in 1995 to celebrate real heroes. Newsweek has covered all manner of everyday heroes over the years, with many of them on the small screen.

In October 2021, dash-cam footage(行车记录仪)captured a Florida policeman saving a 1-year-old girl. The girl was choking and unresponsive when her parents turned to Reginald Mathieu, who happened to be nearby. He raced to the girl’s rescue and performed repeated back blows until she regained consciousness.

One month earlier, five U.S. Marines came to the aid of a woman whose vehicle got stuck in floodwater in Washington, D.C. The men happened to be driving by after a Marine funeral. With the physical strength, they jumped into the knee-high water in clean and clear clothes and pushed the lady’s car out of the flood. “This is so cool. I should say they are superheroes in uniforms,” the woman said in her TikTok video of the rescue.

Humans are not the only everyday superheroes—dogs have also pulled off remarkable lifesaving moments. Mali, a British special-forces dog, was awarded the Britain’s Victoria Cross in 2017.

【1】Why was a 1945 order drafted according to the fictional story?

    A.To celebrate real heroes.

    B.To advertise the Marvel Comics.

C.To make April 28 a Soldier Boy day

D.To introduce the National Superhero Day.

【2】How long has the National Superhero Day existed?

    A.At least 26 years.

    B.Exact 22 years.

    C.Only 28 years.

    D.More than 76 years.

【3】What does “This” underlined in Paragraph 5 refer to?

    A.The Marine funeral.

    B.The girl’s rescue.

    C.The clean and clear car.

    D.The help from the Marines.

【4】Where is the text probably taken from?

    A.A news report.

    B.A book review.

    C.A hero’s story.

    D.A diary entry.

  • 22、A team of scientists from University of Freiburg in Germany are developing a shoe with a sensor to automatically tie its laces(鞋带)that could be taken off when users click their heels together.

Its been 26 years since we saw them magically tightening Marty McFlys Nike boots in the film Back to The Future.

Now,self-tying shoelaces could actually become a reality this year, proving right one of the films fantastical predictions for what 2015 would be like.

Engineers have designed a shoe that can automatically lace up,adjusting itself to the shape of your foot.

Simply slip the controller on and pressure sensors will tell the ‘smart shoe’ when your foot is in position, triggering(触发)a tiny motor in the heel that pulls the laces tight.

When you want to take off the shoes, you click your heels together twice and the motor will release a spring(弹簧)in the shoes tongue, which loosens the laces enough for you to slip them off.

And the invention doesn’t even need to be plugged in to charge or have its battery replaced because it runs on power generated by the swing of your foot as you walk.

Engineer K1evis Ylli,of the Institute for Micromachining and Information Technology in southern Gemany, said the shoes could help a variety of different people.

One focus is that it could be used in shoes for elderly people who have mobility problems,he said. But it could also work for children,or as a lifestyle product.

The design, which is still in a prototype(雏形)stage, cleverly gets the energy of the foots swing when opposing magnets in each shoe move past each other. It then uses that power to charge a battery. An hour of walking is enough to tighten the laces once, and it requires no energy to undo the shoes because that relies on the spring alone.

【1】Which of the following can be the best title of the text?

    A.A fantastical prediction

    B.A great invention in Germany

    C.A shoe with self-tying laces

    D.A popular lifestyle product

【2】What can we learn about the shoes?

    A.They can automatically take off.

B.They can adjust themselves to your foot.

C.They need to be charged once.

D.They have been in design for 26 years.

【3】From the last paragraph we can know ____________.

A.the shoes have been put into use

B.the shoes need power to take off

C.the shoes promise to be popular

D.how the shoes work to produce energy

  • 23、C

People laugh and people cry.But it is thought that emotions such as anger, or joy, typically make Americans feel uncomfortable and embarrassed. The shedder of tears 落泪者 is likely to apologize, even when a great tragedy was the cause. The observer of tears is likely to do everything possible to put an end to the emotional tears. But judging from recent studies of crying behavior, both those responses to tears are often inappropriate and may even be counterproductive 适得其反).

Humans are the only animals clearly known to shed emotional tears.Since evolution has given rise to few purposeless physiological responses, it is logical to assume that crying has one or more functions that increase survival.

Although some observers have suggested that crying is a way to ask for assistance form others (as a crying baby might from its mother), the shedding of tears is hardly necessary to get help.Vo-cal 出声的 cries would have been quite enough, more likely than tears to gain attention. So, it appears that there must be something special about tears themselves.

Indeed, the new studies suggest that emotional tears may play a direct role in easing stress.  University of Minnesota researchers who are studying the chemical composition of tears have recently separated two important chemicals from emotional tears. Both chemicals are found only in tears that are shed in response to emotion.Tears shed because of exposure to cut onion would contain no such substance.

Other researchers are looking into the usefulness of tears as a means of diagnosing human ills and monitoring drugs. At Tulane University's Teat Analysis Laboratory Dr.Peter Kastl and his colleagues report that they can use tears to detect drug abuse, to study the causes of "dry eye" syndrome 综合症)and the effects of eye surgery, and perhaps even to measure exposure to environmental pollutants.

1What does the phrase "both those responses" in Paragraph 1 refer to ?

A.Crying out of sorrow and shedding tears for happiness.

B.The embarrassment and unpleasant feelings of the observers.

C.Linking illness with crying and finding the chemical composition of tears.

D.The tear shedder' s apology and the observer' s effort to stop the crying.

2It is known from the first paragraph that____.

A.shedding tears gives unpleasant feelings to Americans

B.crying may often result in tragedy

C.crying usually wins sympathy from other people

D.one who sheds tears in public will be blamed

3What does the author say about crying?

A.It is a pointless physiological response to the environment.

B.It must have a role to play in man' s survival.

C.It is meant to get attention and assistance.

D.It usually produces the desired effect.

4From the passage we can infer that____.

A.it is unnatural for people to shed tears

B.we can reduce our stress by shedding tears

C.shedders of tears can' t get help by crying loudly

D.unlike animals, humans can shed tears for survival

As we grow old, we realize that we have so little time to read and there are so many great books that we’ve yet to get around to. Ye re-readers are everywhere around us. For certain fans, re-reading The Lord of the Rings is a conventional practice annually. One friend told me that Jane Austen’s Emma can still surprise him, despite his having read it over 50 times.

New sudden clear understandings can be gained from the process of re-reading. Journalist Rebacca Mead, a long-time Englishwoman in New York, first came across George Eliot’s Middlemarch at 17. Since then, she has read it again every five years. With each re-reading, it has opened up further; in each chapter of her life, it has resonated (引起共鸣) differently. Mead evidenced the large number of ways in which really good books not only stand the test of repeat reads, but also offer fresh gifts each time we crack their spines. These kinds of books grow with us.

Scientists have also recognized the mental health benefits of re-reading. Research conducted with readers in the US found that on our first reading, we are concerned with the “what” and the “why”. Second time round, we’re able to better appreciate the emotions that the plot continues to express. As researcher Cristel Russell of the American University explained, returning to a book “brings new or renewed appreciation of both the great book and its readers.”

It’s true that we often find former selves on the pages of old books (if we’re fond of making notes on the pages). These texts can carry us back to a time and place, and remind us of the kind of person that we were then. We’re changed not only by lived experience but also by read experience by the books that we’ve discovered since last reading the one in our hand.

More so than the movie director or the musician, the writer calls upon our imaginations, using words to lead us to picture this declaration of love or that unfaithfulness in life. A book is a joint project between writers and readers, and we must pour so much of ourselves into reading that our own life story can become connected with the story in the book.

Perhaps what’s really strange is that we don’t re-read more often. After all, we watch our favourite films again and we wouldn’t think of listening to an album only once. We treasure messy old paintings as objects, yet of all art forms, literature alone is a largely one-time delight. A book, of course, takes up more time, but as Mead confirms, the rewards make it adequately worthwhile.

1The two books are mentioned in Paragraph 1 mainly to __________.

    A. attract the attention of readers

    B. introduce the topic of the passage

    C. provide some background information

    D. show the similarity between re-readers

    A. reading benefits people both mentally and physically

    B. readers mainly focus on feelings on their first reading

    C. we know ourselves better through re-reading experience

4The purpose of the passage is to __________.

    A. call on different understandings of old books

    B. focus on the mental health benefits of reading

    C. bring awareness to the significance of re-reading

    D. introduce the effective ways of re-reading old books
