21、 The Ig Nobel Prize (搞笑诺贝尔奖) hands out awards for “achievements that first make people laugh, then make them think.” Sometimes the world of design can feel the same way: a pen that can detect cancer mid-surgery, for example. But a musical instrument engineered for zero gravity? Perhaps less so. Nevertheless, both are driven by the desire to improve lives.
The pen, musical instrument and more could be found at the Global Grad Show, which has rapidly become a regional networking opportunity with large commercial value, but that hasn’t stopped grassroots innovation from pushing through.
The graduate show, organized by author and designer Brendan MeGetrick, brought together 150 student projects from 100 universities including MIT and Harvard, and countries as diverse as Jordan. Chile and Pakistan. Schools, McGetrick told CNN, are “where one finds design in its purest and most potentially valuable form.”
“Free from the commercial pressures of professional life, the next generation of designers is channeling their craft to improve the world,” he added. “The next generations do not have the luxury to hope that the present issues will be solved. They anticipate the worst and see how they might channel their talents and training to invent tools that we will need before we urgently need them.
This year’s winner of the Global Grad Show, Mirjam de Bruijn said: “I think we should stop thinking that we can do it on our own. I think designers, scientists, technologists and entrepreneurs should start working together. As a designer, I see too many great solutions that are not being used because their design is bad, and I am sure that scientists or technologists think the same with some designs that look better than they actually work.”
【1】A pen and a musical instrument are mentioned to show ________.
A.some designs are ridiculous but meaningful. B.sone achievements are serious but useless.
C.some instruments are supernatural but handy. D.some surgeries are risky bout reasonable.
【2】How will the Global Grad Show benefit the graduates?
A.By leaching skills and knowledge.
B.By offering scientific researches.
C.By providing commercially valuable opportunities.
D.By inspiring the invention ol the urgently needed tools.
【3】According to MeGetrick, the next generation of designers ________.
A.wants to work out the present issues eagerly
B.hates to make their designs on their own
C.feels angry for those solutions not being used
D.tends to find design in its purest form
【4】Which or the following statements might Mirjam de Bruijn agree with?
A.Where there is a will, there is a way. B.Two heads are better than one.
C.Great minds think alike. D.Birds of a feather flock together.
22、 With obesity rats on the rise among Americans and their pets, two California women have come up with an all-in-one solution — a foggy boot camp where dog owners and their dogs work out together. Thank Dog Boot camp is the nation's first outdoor fitness program where both humans and dogs get a full-body workout while the dogs also learn basic skills. Founded two years ago by twins Jill and Jamie Bowers, the program has grown to include classes at various Los Angeles and Orange County locations and most recently in Northern California.
Classes begin as early as 6 a.m. With instructors yelling out commands in the traditional boot camp style. The difference here is that instructors are certified in both fitness and dog training, and each boot camper happens to have a four-legged partner by their side at all times.“People need to exercise, and dogs need to be trained and exercised,” said Jill Bowers.
The class takes place on a field in a public park with 30 minutes of running and 30 minutes of weight training. Each person has a mat. Their dogs have their own mats and water bowls beside their owner. Various squats, bends, jumps and dashes are combined for the humans. Meanwhile, dogs are told to engage in a series of numbered commands ranging from “sit” to “go” “to” “come”.
“A lack of exercise and training causes logs to have behavioral problem.” said Bowers. “If they don't have enough activities to exhaust their energy, they take it out on your favorite sofa of your designer shoes. With the boot camp, your dog is too tired to be bad.”
Attorney Taylor joined six months ago. “My dog always gets me out of bed,” said Taylor. “It's so used to going now that it's the one making sure I'm up and go out of the door. I've lost 15 pounds and have gained much confidence.”

23、Energy independence has a nice ring to it.Doesn’t it? If you think so, you’re not alone, because energy independence has been the dream of American president for decades, and never more so than in the past few years, when the most recent oil price shock has been partly responsible for kicking off the great recession.
“Energy independence” and its rhetorical (修辞的) companion “energy security” are, however, slippery concepts that are rarely though through. What is it we want independence from, exactly?
Most people would probably say that they want to be independent from imported oil.But there are reasons that we buy all that old from elsewhere.
The first reason is that we need it to keep our economy running.Yes, there is a trickle(涓涓细流)of biofuel(生物燃料)available, and more may become available, but most biofuels cause economic waste and environmental destruction.
Second, Americans have basically decided that they don’t really want to produce all their own oil. They value the environmental quality they preserve over their oil imports from abroad.Vast areas of the United States are off-limits to oil exploration and production in the name of environmental protection. To what extent are Americans really willing to endure the environmental impacts of domestic energy production in order to cut back imports?
Third, there are benefits to trade. It allows for economic efficiency, and when we buy things from places that have lower production costs than we do, we benefit. And although you don’t read about this much, the United States is also a large exporter of oil products, selling about 2 million barrels of petroleum products per day to about 90 countries.
There is no question that the United States imports a great deal of energy and, in fact, relies on that steady flow to maintain its economy. When that flow is interrupted, we feel the pain in short supplies and higher prices. At the same time, we obtain massive economic benefits when we buy the most affordable energy on the world market and when we engage in energy trade around the world.
【1】What does the author say about energy independence for America?
A.It sounds very attractive.
B.It ensures national security.
C.It will bring oil prices down
D.It has long been everyone’s dream.
【2】Why does America rely heavily on oil imports?
A.It wants to expand its storage of crude oil(原油).
B.Its own oil reserves are quickly running out.
C.It wants to keep its own environment undamaged.
D.Its own oil production falls short of demand.
【3】What does the author say about oil trade?
A.It proves profitable to both sides.
B.It improves economic efficiency.
C.It makes for economic prosperity.
D.It saves the cost of oil exploration.
24、Here’re some of the excellent inventions in 2023. Which one do you like most?
Whiter Paint
The paint on a white building reflects 80 to 90% of the sunlight that strikes it. The rest of the light warms the surrounding area, raising air-conditioning bills. But the Whiter Paint is made of chemicals that better reflect UV rays. It reflects up to 98% of the sunlight, which could reduce AC use by 40%. “The heat is reflected into deep space,” says Xiulin Ruan, who led the Purdue University team that created the paint.
Duolingo app
Now you can take music lessons on a smartphone, using this app, which uses an on-screen piano to teach basics such as harmony and beat. You learn by interacting with more than 200 popular pieces of music. Just match sounds to notes and play along. “You don’t need natural talent to learn music,” says Karen Chow, who’s a learning scientist at Duolingo.
Model A
Model A, developed by Alef Aeronautics, is a two-seat all-electric vehicle with a flight range of 110 miles. And it looks as if it were made to be parked in a garage. In July, 2023, the Federal Aviation Administration gave Ale f permission to take the vehicle on test flights. The company hopes to deliver the first Model A by 2026.
Moonwalkers
They’re actually battery-powered shoes with wheels. They let you walk normally—just faster and more easily. Moonwalkers, made by Shift Robotics, use AI to sense when you’re speeding up or slowing down, and adjust themselves accordingly. With it, you can walk at speeds up to seven miles per hour.
【1】What is special about Whiter Paint?
