And there are many different ways of remembering them, too. Here are some of the things that we do to make sure that we don't forget our heroes.

Some countries have a special remembrance day, like the one every January in the USA for Dr Martin Luther King, the human rights leader.

When Lady Diana Spencer died in 1997, in Paris, many people left flowers and messages near the place where the car accident happened. Now there is a Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain in Hyde Park in London.

Sometimes places are named after famous people: for example, Liverpool, in England and Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil both have airports named after local musicians, John Lennon and Tom Jobim.

In Hollywood, The Walk of Fame has the names of film, TV and music celebrities in stars on the pavement(人行道). Very famous celebrities have their handprints, footprints and autographs in concrete (混凝土) at Hollywood's Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

    Expressing yourself

“Don’t fight with a French-learner!!!!!” “Over 40 degrees in summer, right?!!!! No heater in winter, right?!!!!”

Recently, you may have seen a lot of expressions like the above online. It is the latest popular style called “roaring genre”. It has short sentences, a complaining tone and a lot of exclamation marks.

Internet users say the style is just a way of letting out emotions, and in fact, it shows an active attitude towards life. But, at first, many of us think people who speak this way are quite angry. Sometimes we may feel afraid of the tone and the exclamation marks.

Why? Because on the Internet, we can’t see the face of a person when he or she posts a message. We can only guess if that person is happy or angry. And we could be wrong.

There are rules of behavior to follow when you’re online. It is important to remember that you are dealing with “real” people. So you should use the best manners —just like you would at home or in school.

For example, when you chat in English with someone online, you shouldn’t type in all capital letters, because this means you are shouting. It can easily upset people, even if you don’t do it on purpose. You can use asterisks, like *this* or lines, like _this_, to emphasize a word. Or, you can use emoticons to tell the person what you’re feeling.

Also, it is not polite to use short forms unless you are talking to your good friends. For example, use “see you later”, instead of “CU L8er”.

【1】The expressions in the first paragraph are called ________.

    A.complaining genre

    B.roaring genre

    C.ironic genre

    D.critical genre

【2】What’s the characteristic of the “roaring genre”?

    A.It has long sentences.

    B.It has a complaining tone.

    C.It has no marks.

    D.It has many words.

【3】Internet users think “roaring genre” shows________ towards life.

    A.an active attitude

    B.a negative attitude

    C.no attitude

    D.complaint

【4】We should be________ when we are online.

    A.mad

    B.active

    C.critical

    D.polite

【5】When we chat online, typing in all capital letters means________.

    A.we are polite

B.we don’t want to chat with others

    C.we are shouting

    D.we are happy

  • 24、   More than 1,000 different kinds of pieces of plastic, including 115 cups, 25 bags, four bottles and two pairs of shoes, have been found inside a dead whale(鲸鱼) in Indonesia, according to local officials.

When the whale was found on the island, it was already decomposing when animal doctors arrived. So they were unable to be sure if the plastic caused its death, said Lukas, the leader of the World Wildlife Fund in Indonesia. The plastic weighed about 6 kilograms, or 13 pounds, he said.

But pictures of the dead whale caused a warm discussion. The people in the country have started to realize that it is because of using too much plastic. So has the government. Indonesia, a nation of about 260 million people was the world’s second-biggest producer of plastic waste in 2018, behind only China.

If the whales eat too much plastic, they will have a wrong feeling. They think that they are full. And that will lead them to eat less food that provides all the good things they need, said Nicholas who is the leader of the Ocean Conservancy. Moreover, eating too much plastic can make them reduce their weight, their energy and slow down their swimming. As a result, whales are easier to be hurt by the sharks and many other dangerous animals in the sea.

More than 800 kinds of animals in the sea are affected by about 8.8 million tons of plastic which is thrown away freely in the ocean each year. Plastic can also stop the animals moving freely and sometimes they will cause them to die because they have to be under the water for too long. Some plastic can make a small hole in their stomachs after they eat it.

1What does the underlined word “ decomposing” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. 腐烂. B. 吸收. C. 凝固. D. 飘散.

2Which country produced most plastic waste in 2018?

    A. India. B. China. C. Indonesia. D. America.

3What happens to the whales after eating too much plastic?

    A. They will feel hungry. B. They will die at once.

    C. They will eat less healthy food. D. They will attack sharks actively.

4According to the passage, what can we infer?

    A. Pictures of the dead whale caught few people’s attention.

    B. People kill whales because they are dangerous animals.

    C. Plastic can stop sea animals moving freely, even cause them to die.

    D. Indonesia government will take action to stop the sea pollution.
