It’s no secret that many students do not like to say in classrooms and study all day. 【1】 Quite a lot of them don’t like outdoor PE classes either.
“Our three PE classes every week are all run, run and run. It’s for our High School Entrance Examination (中考),said Li Liangjing, 15, a junior 3 student from Xiamen.
【2】 . Two months ago, the Shanghai University of Sport made a survey from over 110,000 students and worked out teenagers’ physical index (指数). For junior high school students, their physical health score is 94.1, which is quite good. But this doesn’t mean they are active in sports, because their awareness (意识) and willingness (意愿) to do physical exercises only scores at 74.8. 【3】 , reported the Paper News.
Because of that, the Shanghai Education committee decided to put more importance on the general physical quotient (体商) of teenagers. This means that schools should pay attention to not only students’ health and sports test scores, but also their knowledge, skills and willingness to do exercises.
Thus, making PE classes more fun and growing students’ interests in sports seems necessary, according to the deputy director (副主任) of the Shanghai Education Committee, Wang Ping. 【4】 , such as throwing the handkerchief (手绢) and the eagle and the chickens. 24、 Once while being prepared for a television interview, I was chatting with the host about stay-at-home fathers. Why are we seeing more stay-at-home dads? I thought maybe it’s because a man doesn’t make more money than his wife. Many families now take earning (赚钱) power into consideration when deciding which parent will stay home.
At that point, one of the members expressed his opinion, “It should be the better parent who stays at home”. A lot of guys say things like that. I was a stay-at-home father for eight years, so what he said made me excited. It showed that our family’s choice could only have been correct if I was a “better” parent than my wife.
I suppose an argument could have been made that when I began staying home my wife was the “better” parent: She had spent more tune with our son, could read him better and calm him more quickly. And if he had a choice, he’d have picked her over me. But as she was the more employable (有人雇佣的) one, my wife went out to work and I looked after our son.
Because of the increased time I spent with him, I soon knew him well, understood what he needed and could look after him more or less as my wife could. Actually, the experience helped me unlock one of the world’s great secrets: Women are good at looking after the children because they do it. It’s not because of a mother’s instinct (本能)—which I think is mostly learned anyway. It’s because they put in the time and attention required to become good at the job.
Women are able to give birth and nurse, but over the long term experience is more important. When I got the experience myself, I was good, too. As good? I don’t know. Who cares? Children are not made of glass. Other people are able to look after them besides Mom.

If you saw her, you wouldn’t think she really looks the part, but she is stronger than Superman could ever be. Her name is Sandra Keierleber. I first met her at volleyball tryouts(选拔赛), but didn’t notice anything special at first. As the week passed, however, she showed she had more heart than anyone. She stood out because she never gave up, no matter what.
Sandra isn’t the tallest or the fastest-in fact, this was her first time playing volleyball and it showed-but that didn’t stop her. She was always the first to arrive and the last to leave. By the end of tryouts she had found a place in everyone’s heart. When the name list for new members was put up, we all waited nervously as she checked. When she stood at the door and smiled happily, all we could do was cheer.
After Sandra made the team, she worked even harder to improve her game. When she asked for help, we gladly taught her. She also became our fan, attending almost every school game and even joining us in the city games. We all like her, because she never thinks about doing things the easy way, or losing that smile. 27、My summer hols wr CWOT: B4, WE USED 2go 2 NY 2C my bro, his GF thr 3: @ KIDS FTF. ILNY, its gr8.
Can you understand this sentence? If you can’t, don’t feel too bad: neither could the middle school teacher in England who received this as homework. This is Netspeak: the language of computerized communication found on Internet or cellphones. To newcomers, it can look like a completely foreign language. So, what is the "translation of the sentence above? My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York, it’s great.
School teachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming the English language. Increasing spelling and grammatical mistakes can be seen in students' writing. They fear the language could become corrupted(面目全非的).
Everyone should just relax, say linguists(语言学家).They believe Netspeak is in fact more of a good thing. David Crystal, from the University of Wales, argues that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing has been picked up again. Geoffrey Nunberg, from Stanford University, agrees. " People get better at writing by writing, " he says. "Kids who are now doing text messaging, e-mail, and instant messages will write at least as well as, and possibly better than, their parents.”
Linguist James Milroy says, for centuries, it is believed without exception that young people are harming the language. And you can bet your bottom dollar that when today’s teenagers become tomorrows parents, they too will think this way. Milroy argues that languages do not and cannot become "corrupted", they simply change to meet the new needs
However, Netspeakers do agree that it is important to teach young people how to speak and write Standard(/E)English. Cynthia Me Vey says, I can understand Netspeak worries teachers and it's important that they get across to their pupils that text messaging is for fun, but that learning to write proper English is a must for their future.”
Perhaps, we should give teenagers a little more trust anyway. Erin, age 12, says, " I wouldn’t use text language in my homework. Text is just for fun.”
【1】What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To give an example of a foreign language.
