In the Spring and Autumn Period, the whole country was divided into different small kingdoms and people suffered from the wars. At that time, Suzhou was the capital of the Wu Kingdom. Strong walls were built to protect Wu people. All of the people stopped worrying about the war, except for the Prime Minister Wu Zixu. He told his entourage(随从), “The strong wall is a good protection, but if the enemy fights with us, they can’t go inside, but we can’t go outside, either. If we eat up all the food, we will die from hunger. So remember to dig a hole under the wall.” Many years later, after Wu died, his words came true.
During the war, the army did what Wu Zixu had told them before and found that the wall under the earth was built with special bricks(砖) made from glutinous rice flour(糯米粉). This food saved many people from hunger. These bricks were the earliest niangao.

25、Many people thought that U.S. President Calvin Coolidge always lived in the White House. However, he sometimes lived in the nearby Willard Hotel.
Once, in the middle of a night, the President woke up to see a thief searching his clothes. Coolidge calmly spoke up from the darkness, "I wish you wouldn’t take that watch."
"Why?" asked the shocked man.
Coolidge answered, "Take it near the window and read what is engraved(雕刻) on the back of it."
The man read, "Presented to Calvin Coolidge, Speaker of the House, by the Massachusetts General Court." He was very surprised!
"Are you President Coolidge?" he asked. He had never thought he would find the president sleeping in a hotel!
"Yes, I am." Coolidge said. Then he asked, "Why are you doing this, Son?"
The young man explained that he and two friends traveled to Washington during their college vacation. They spent all of their money and had no money to pay the hotel bill and the train tickets back to school.
Coolidge added up the cost. It came to $32. That may not sound like much now, but it was a big number then. "I’ll give you the $32 as a loan(借款)," the President said, "And I expect you to pay me back."
The young man thanked him. Coolidge left him with this warning: "Son, you are a nice boy, you are better than you are acting. You are starting down the wrong road. Just remember who you are."
It wasn’t until after the death of Mr. Coolidge that this story was allowed to come out. It was first published in the newspaper Los Angeles Times. 26、 When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelons were expensive. One of my father's friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St.Paul.
Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie's place. We'd sit on the edge of the dock(码头), and got ready for a big meal.
Bernie would take out his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we'd bury our faces in watermelons, eating only the heart-the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, and most seed-free part-and throw away the rest.
Bernie was my father's ideal of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie's wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon.
What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. If you don't take the time to dangle(摇摆)your feet over the dock and enjoy life's small pleasure, your work will probably hurt your life.
For many years, I forgot that lesson I'd learned as a kid on the dock. I was too busy making all the money I could. Well, I've relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That's the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away.

A.He was just a rich businessman. B.He worked hard all the time.
C.He lived a rich but healthy life. D.He knew how to make money.
【4】What do the underlined words "the heart of the watermelon" in the last paragraph refer to?
A.The best part of the watermelon. B.The writer's busy life.

I wanted to say, “Tina, I was just joking!” But she _____ , continued the poem and she finished the rest perfectly.
When she finished, a student asked, “Tina, why did you do that? It’s not an important assignment!” “Because I want to be like you guys! To be ____ .” Tina said.
Silence fell on the whole room when another student cried out, “Tina, we’re not normal! We are teenagers! We get in ____ all the time.” “I know,” Tina said as a big _____ spread across her face. The rest of the students laughed, too.
