Training is over for the day, but one Boston Celtics basketball team coach is still working. Assistant coach Kara Lawson is on the team's court helping new player Carsen Edwards improve his game. He gets the ball into the basket several times and then runs over to her. “Thanks coach” Edwards says before exchanging a high-five with Lawson.

Lawson is one of a record high 11 women serving as assistant coaches among the 30 NBA teams.

“It's not a fad (一时风潮),” said former professional basketball player Nancy Lieberman. “It's opportunities going to very accomplished women who have given their life to the game.” Lieberman herself has broken down barriers as a player, as a coach in the WNBA, as head coach in an NBA minor league and as an assistant in the NBA. She says she quickly learned that building relationships was critical to easing gender (性别) barriers in the organization.

Players respect the women assistant coaches for their experience and knowledge of the game. Kara Lawson was a basketball star at the University of Tennessee and later won a WNBA championship with the Sacramento Monarchs. She also won a gold medal with the U.S women's basketball team at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing China. She retired from play in 2015. Earlier this year, she joined the Celtics as a coach.

One female assistant coach, Kristi Toliver, does double duty. She plays for the WNBA'S Washington Mystics. She also serves as an assistant coach to the NBA'S Washington Wizards team. “The biggest thing learned is to share your voice and what you’ve learned,” Toliver said. “Doing that has helped me communicate with my guys.”

Along with the record number of female assistants, five female referees (裁判) will be working NBA games this season. It's believed the NBA will soon have its first female head coach. Such a move would go a long way toward putting even more women in position to make decisions in the sport.

1What's the relationship between Carsen Edwards and Kara Lawson?

A.Player and coach. B.Student and teacher. C.Son and mother. D.Brother and sister.

2The underlined word “barriers” in Paragraph 3 means________ in English.

B.things that prevent or control progress or movement

C.quicker ways of doing something in order to save time or effort

D.abilities to control your fear in a dangerous or difficult situation

3The best title for this passage is________.

A.The more you know WNBA B.A woman assistant coach

C.Women work better than before D.Women serving as assistant coaches

4The women assistant coaches win the hearts of players for their________.

A.two roles of both a player and a coach

B.experience and knowledge of the games

C.kindness and being members at the Olympics

D.communication and positions to make speeches to the games

  • 25、   When I was in the 7th grade my family traveled to Florida for winter break by car. All was going well while we were driving back, until we stopped at a gas station in Kentucky at 4:00 a.m., just hours away from home. As my sister and I hopped()out of the car, my diary fell out onto the cold, dark sidewalk. And my deepest darkest 7th grade secrets lay there for the whole world to read. But I didn't even notice. Instead I hopped back into the car, and we drove away. When I got home I was very angry at my stupidity. For weeks, I could only imagine the possible results of my forgetfulness; strangers were talking about a silly girl's secrets.

Until one day, something amazing happened. I went to school and my name was called on the school radio—I had gotten a package from New York. I opened the yellow paper, and inside was my diary! Although the cover was dirty, it was there, and had been sent from the town in Kentucky to New York where it was then shipped me.

Along with the diary was a note from a man. He said after picking up my diary, he found my report card in the back, and shipped it to the address of my school. He also told me that he did not invade(侵犯) my privacy(隐私) which made the stone fall away from my heart.

To this day, I am moved by his unbelievable thoughtfulness and kindness—seeing my diary, taking time out of his day and money out of his pocket to sent it to me. I realize that it is to be considerate(考虑周到的)of others.

The Great Wall of China is called the "Ten thousand Ii Great Wall" in Chinese. In fact it' s more than 6000 kilometers long. It winds its way from west to east across deserts over mountains through valleys till at last it reaches the sea. It is one of the wonders of the world.

The Great Wall has a history of over twenty centuries. The first part of it was built during the Spring and Autumn Period. During the Warring States Period more walls were put up to defend the borders of the different kingdoms. It was during the Qin Dynasty that the kingdom of Qin united the different parts into one empire. To keep the enemy out of his empire Emperor Qin Shihuang had all the walls joined up. Thus the Great Wall came into being.

The Great Wall is wide enough at the top for five horses or ten men to walk side by side. Along the wall are watchtowers where soldiers used to keep watch. Fires were lit on the towers as a warning when the enemy came.

It was very difficult to build such a wall in the ancient days without any modern machines. All the work was done by hand. Thousands of men died and were buried under the wall they built. The Great Wall was made not only of stone and earth but of the flesh and blood of millions of men.

Today the Great Wall has become a place of interest not only to the Chinese but to people from all over the world. Many of them have come to know the famous Chinese saying: "He who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man."

  • 27、   Cabin hospitals save more lives

Feng Bangli, from Wuhan, Hubei, began to have a fever at the end of January and suspected that he had been infected with the virus. He tried several times to be admitted to a hospital but failed. He finally gave up and stayed at home, taking drugs given by doctors.

“At that time, too many patients were waiting to see doctors at every hospital, and it was not possible for me to get a bed,” said Feng. Days later, with the community staff’s help, Feng tested positive for COVID-19 and was sent to a makeshift hospital (临时医院) for treatment.

“Without such makeshift hospitals, many COVID-19 patients like me may never have found a bed,” said Feng.

Like Feng, over 12,000 COVID-19 patients in Wuhan received treatment and care at 15 makeshift hospitals. These hospitals were mainly used to receive patients with mild symptoms (轻症).

“Building makeshift hospitals was a key decision made in such an important moment when Wuhan was facing a formidable task of epidemic (疫情) control, and it has played an important role in both prevention and treatment of the disease,” he said.

“Makeshift hospitals have greatly eased pressure and made it possible to treat and isolate people in need,” said Xu Junmei, vice-president of Wuchang makeshift hospital.

Makeshift hospitals have now been copied in other countries. Eight makeshift hospitals are being built in Tehran, Iran, to fight against the virus. The one changed from the Iran Mall, the largest shopping mall in the country, is expected to have a total of 3,000 beds, according to People’s Daily.

On March 29, New York changed a grassy meadow in Central Park into a makeshift hospital, where it will provide 68 hospital beds.

“Considering the ways we can increase hospital capacity right now is very important,” says Dr Andrew Ibrahim, a surgeon at the University of Michigan told Architecture. “If hospitals can’t receive more patients, new facilities need to be built up.”

1What does the writer want to tell us by using Feng Bangli’s example?

A.COVID-19 has infected a large number of people in a very short time.

B.Hospitals should always be prepared for any unexpected situations.

C.The COVID-19 outbreak happened suddenly without the slightest warning.

D.Makeshift hospitals have played an important role in the fight against COVID-19.

2What does the underlined word “formidable” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A.new B.basic C.tough D.strange

3What did Dr Andrew Ibrahim think of Tehran’s and New York’s new makeshift hospitals?

A.They wasted resources. B.They were greatly helpful.

C.They were not practical. D.They would not be as useful as China’s.

4What is the main purpose of the article?

A.To praise China’s quick response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

B.To call on other countries to copy China’s method of fighting the virus.

C.To show the value of building makeshift hospitals to fight COVID-19.

D.To compare the measures different countries have taken to deal with COVID-19.
