24、A workmate of mine lives in the same street as me. He drives about 5 kilometres to work every day while I cycle the same distance almost every day. I must say that I occasionally(偶尔地)take the car if the weather is very bad, or I am very tired or in a hurry. Imagine my surprise when I cycled to work one day, went for a shower in the sports centre and saw my neighbor in the gym on the cycling machine after driving to work! I share an office with another workmate who lives near to me. She drives to work every day and, the end of the day, she drives to a gym. I don’t see the logic(逻辑). It would be much easier to cycle to work so that you have some exercise every day as part of your daily routine.
I try to advise them to cycle to work, so I did some research about the benefits of cycling to work. Of course, cycling has some advantages over driving. It is cheaper, it is better for the environment, and you don’t have to find a parking space. The point about the parking space is an important one as the car parks are often full. I know that my workmate sometimes spends 15 minutes looking for a parking space! It is true that cycling is a little slower than going by car, but at rush hour it doesn’t make much difference. The time it takes to cycle is generally easier to predict than the time it takes to drive. When there is heavy traffic, people on bicycles can get past, while people in cars have to wait.
There are clear health benefits to cycling. According to one expert, if you cycle regularly you should be as fit as a younger person. I am 47 and I still play football in a team,so I would say that his opinion is true. As well as being good for your health, cycling can reduce stress. I also find that when I can’t solve a problem at work, the answer often comes to me when I am cycling. Sometimes the harder you think about a problem, the harder it is to find the solution. And you really need to pay less attention to the problems. Cycling relaxes the mind.
I am going to say to my workmates “two wheels good, four wheels bad” every day until they get on their bikes!

26、When I looked at the grade on my math paper, my jaw(下巴) almost dropped to the ground: a big “65” in bright red ink.I had never received such a terrible grade before.
When I got home that afternoon, I lied to my dad.I told him I got 85 and that the report wouldn’t come until the end of the month. Dad smiled. His daughter would never lie about her grade, so he didn’t doubt my words.
A month later, Dad asked me again about the report at the dinner table. He looked right into my eyes and asked for an answer.Having no choice, I told him that I had in fact got just 65 in my math final.I had lied because I didn’t want to let him down.
For a moment, he just looked at me.I would have preferred a telling off than that silence. Finally, Dad said, in a hurt voice, “You have already let me down, with your lie.I am not disappointed at your math score. No one can be perfect all the time. But I am very disappointed in you.If you can’t be honest with your dad, who can you be honest with? It’s much easier to get a better grade than rebuild someone else’s trust(信任) in you.”
Dad’s words touched my heart.I could not forgive myself for having hurt his feelings.I took out the report that I had been hiding for weeks, handed it to him and apologized(道歉) sincerely.I realized that my honesty is not only important to me, but to those around me that truly care about me.
In one of Shakespeare’s plays, a person says, “No legacy(遗产) is so rich as honesty.” Now I understand those words.

It’s almost time for Science Night. I need a partner. Who should I ask? I have three friends who all want to help. How can I choose just one for the task?
My best friend Jule is fun to be around. But she’s as chatty as a bird. When she start to talk-just watch out! I can’t get in a single word.
Still, that might work for Science Night; She’d show our project to the crowd. Jule’s voice would boom out like a drum. I wouldn’t mind if she were extra loud!
And then there’s Dan, who’s really shy But wise as an owl—he’s so smart? He’d help with the thinking for the job. He wouldn’t talk, but he’d do his part. | But what about Shel, who’s good at art? He paints and draws and sculpts so well. Our project would look great no doubt! I’m sure I should be asking Shel.
How can I choose just one from three? I need them all! I’m feeling sick. I’m as dizzy as a spinning top. When trying to choose. I just can’t pick!
But wait—why not ask them all to help? A group of four is better than one. I’d love to work with all my friends. In such a group, we’d have such fun!
The work could be shared by four of us. Be me and Shel and Dan and Jule. We’d fit together like puzzle pieces. And take the grand prize in the school! |
