25、Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation?
UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition "depending on who needs it".
Nitrogen (氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all.
Simard talks about "mother trees", usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down "mother trees" with no awareness of these highly complex "tree societies" or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest.
"We didn't take any notice of it" Simard says sadly. "Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance." If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.
【1】The underlined sentence "the opposite is true" in Paragraph 2 probably means that trees .
A. compete for survival B. protect their own wealth
C. depend on each other D. provide support for dying trees
【2】"Mother trees" are extremely important because they .
A. look the largest in size in the forest B. pass on nutrition to young trees
C. seem more likely to be cut down by humans D. know more about the complex "tree societies"
【3】The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph refers to .
A. how "tree societies" work B. how trees grow old
C. how forestry industry develops D. how young trees survive
【4】We can learn from the passage that _______.
A. trees aren’t as complex as we think
B. Charles Darwin had the same opinion as Simard
C. if “Mother trees” are cut down, they won’t make difference to young trees.
D. trees can share resources with other ones by the underground fungi networks.
26、Nov. 21 is World Hello Day. It began back in the 1970s as part of an effort to make the world more peaceful. It was created by the United Nations just after the war between Israel and Egypt in 1973. Its aim is to encourage people to use communication rather than force to settle conflicts(解决争端)。 The philosophy (理念) behind it is: Say “Hello” and stop war.
It sounds like a fine idea, but most of us know that simple saying “Hello” won’t bring about world peace. Still, the simple act of saying “hello ”to someone can truly make a lot of difference. You raise your head to someone as you pass by , say “Hello’.It is such a casual (不经意的)thing and requires so little effort, but you might even make his day.
Although we might not realize it, a small thing like a greeting can mean a lot to a person. Some people are lonely because they’re shy. That leads to them feeling cut off.they find it difficult to communicate with people, even though they want to. They may secretly smile in their hearts after they hear your greetings. It’s a good idea, not just on Nov.21, but every day, to remember to say “hello”to as many people as we can.
No one said it better than the French writer Joseph Joubert: “Politeness is the flower of humanity(人性)’’. A “Hello” to a stranger is a small thing, and often neglected (忽视), but through it we can make the world better for another person.
【1】World hello day was created by ____

D. We can make the world better by greeting others.

Nowadays experience, like many other things, is becoming more and more .
Several days ago, I wanted to invite my friends to lunch. What we really needed was a good and quiet for some conversation, not a big meal, I chose one only for people like me who belonged to a particular club. What could be nicer?
When I a day before, I was asked whether I would eat a $20 or $50 lunch. I said, “$50 .” I didn’t realize until I was asked to pay after the lunch, that “$50” means “$50 for each person.” There were five of us that day. When the bill(账单)came , it was $310.40 (250 for food and the rest for drinks, fruits and air-conditioning). Though everybody was surprised, I paid the bill without a word.
What could I say? It was my own that made me pay the lunch bill of my life. On the whole, it was not so . We had a wonderful lunch and the place was beautiful. Besides, the experience was good and special, and will in later years. To support the logic(逻辑)of the lunch bill, I have developed my own way to explain it: $50 for the lunch and $260.40 for the .
