  • 24、Drugs(药物)come in different ways. However, can you imagine that drugs come in chicken eggs? A team of scientists from England say that it can come true. They have developed special chickens that lay eggs with drugs inside. These special drugs can help with some kinds of illnesses. Until now, they have made two kinds of drugs. One drug can deal with skin problems and the other can deal with a nerve disease(神经性疾病).

Certain drugs are produced by the special chickens inside their egg whites. These drugs are made of proteins which can be found in animals’ skin, hair, milk and meat. The scientists also use DNA technology to make sure that the drugs are only inside the egg whites. In this way, the chickens can stay healthy.

Besides egg whites, drugs made of proteins come in milk of cows and sheep. Compared with cows and sheep, the special chickens have ascendancy over them. First, they are cheaper to raise. Second, they need less room and grow faster.

These special chickens can pass on their drug-producing ability. So far, five generations of the special chickens have appeared. But scientists may need more time to make the drugs perfect. It’s said that scientists will realize their dream in five to ten years.

1What is the passage mainly about?

    A. It’s mainly about a serious illness.

  • 25、The game of telephone is a classic ice breaker and party game. It’s easy to set up and a lot of fun to play. You and your friends will try to pick a word or phrase, “pass it on” by whispering(耳语) it to someone next to you, and have fun seeing how much it changed during the game. All you will need to play is a couple of friends, a word or phrase, and a whisper.

    Get everyone in place.

Although the game of telephone is simple to play, you will need to arrange(安排) the players in a way that supports the game. Have everyone stand in either a line or a circle. Players should be spaced far enough apart that they won’t overhear the word when it isn’t their turn. Proper position is important when playing telephone.

    Start the game.

Choose a person to start the game. Make the person think of a word or give a certain word to him or her. And he or she should whisper it to the person next to them. The pronunciation of the word should sound like many others’ as the idea is to see how much it changes by the game’s end. Once the word has been told to the next person, they will whisper it to the person next to them.

    Continue whispering the word.

Players continue listening to the word and repeating what they think they heard to the person next to them. This is done until the last person in the line or circle is told the word. Every person should have heard the word or phrase by the end of the game.

See how much the word changed.

Once the last person hears the word or phrase, they will say what they think they heard out-loud. This is compared to the original word that the game started with. This is the moment when all the players get to learn just how much the word or phrase changed through their “telephone line”.

  • 26、I had hidden the long black bag in the garage(车库) for the past two days. Tonight, in the dark, I would finally take it away. If everything went OK, it would be done by morning. But I had to be sure no one, not even my wife, saw me.

It was more difficult to get away from the party than I expected. I said that the children were tired and needed to get to bed. It was partly true. But the main reason for leaving was that I wanted to complete my plan.

First I had to get the kids to sleep. That was never easy at any time and tonight it was even more difficult. The eldest one wanted to know why we left the party early. I told him 10:30 pm was not early. As usual, I read them a bed-time story, but I had to stop myself reading too quickly or they would learn my secret.

Silence finally came, and feeling like a thief in the night, I went out of the house and into the garage. Taking one end, I dragged the bag out from its hiding place and took it into the garden. I was worried that my neighbors might hear me and call the police.

It was already eleven o'clock. By the light of the moon I started working, trying to make as little noise as possible. And that was not easy with a saw (锯子) and a hammer(铁锤).

After much effort, my work was finally completed. I looked down at my watch. It was exactly 4:00 am. Then I went inside to have a shower and get a few hours of sleep. It wouldn't be long now before the kids would rush into my room and wake me up to tell me about the new tree-house Father Christmas had brought them this year.
