24、Hi George,
Many thanks for sending the information of the 165 participants (参加者) coming to our company’s sales meeting in November. Here is my report on the plans that will be necessary.
Hotel
In the past few years we have used the Transocean Hotel. We have always had good feedback ( 反馈 ) from participants about the Transocean. However, it’s hard for participants to walk from there to the meeting center, and they have also increased their prices recently. As a result, I am going to get the prices of the Beach View this year.
Meeting Center
In relation to numbers, the hall seats 200 people, so there shouldn’t be any problems. But if we get a lot of late bookings (预定) we may need a bigger hall. I will monitor the situation closely (密切的). On another point, we need to make sure that the amplification system(扩音系统) is working well, as last year several participants said that the sound was too low at the back of the hall.
Speakers
All four speakers are outside speakers, and they will come for sure. The well-known writer Sandra Brett has agreed to give a talk on “Social media marketing: where next?”, and I’m sure it will be very well received.
Food and Drink
Last year this was a problem. The participants were not sure whether they should stay in the meeting center for lunch or go outside. In fact, if people do want to go outside and get some fresh air, it is not a problem. So this year I am going to get some new food companies, and l’ll ask them to provide some simple cold food. Participants can have this on the day. Or they can buy their own lunch if they wish, and I’ll make it clear that this is possible.
I think that’s all. Let me know if there’s anything else, especially if you suddenly get a lot of late bookings.
Cathy

26、For thousands of years, people have lived with dogs. Ancient paintings on the walls of caves show people living with dogs. Almost a third of the homes in the United States and England have dogs, and these dogs come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.
The largest dog in the world was a dog named Zorba. When Zorba, a mastiff, was seven years old in 1989, he was 94 centimeters (37 inches) tall. In other words, Zorba was more than half as tall as an adult man. At his largest, Zorba weighed more than a heavy weight boxer at 156 kilograms(343 pounds).
In comparison, the smallest bog was a Yorkshire terrier from England. This dog was only the size of a matchbox, measuring 7.1 centimeters(2.8 inches) tall and 9.5 centimeters (3.75 inches) from nose to tail. It weighed about half as much as a common book, and even a young child could easily pick it up with one hand. It passed away in 1945 when it was only two years old.
Some dogs are wonderful, not for their sizes, but for their brains. One incredible (难以制信的)dog is Endal, the companion (陪伴) of a man named Allen Parton who has used a wheelchair since a car accident in 1991.
In 2001, Parton was hit by a car while crossing a road with Endal, and thrown out of his chair. Endal quickly moved Parton into the recovery place, covered him with a blanket(毯子), and pushed his mobile phone close enough for him to reach. Then, once he saw that Parton was all right, Endal ran back and forth to a nearby hotel, barking until people came out to help.
Endal was rewarded for his bravery by being awarded a medal, and he has been the subject of a number of TV documentaries.

27、 China is a nation with a rich culture in handwriting. “Even though the computer is widely used today, Chinese people should not forget the skill of writing with hands,” said a Chinese government official(官员).
Nowadays, the computer has become a very useful tool to help people to write. As people use computers more often than before, many people have forgotten how to write Chinese characters (字). People often make a lot of mistakes in writing.
At present, China is trying to help pupils and teachers to improve their writing with the help of information technology. With the technology, it is hoped that teachers can write their teaching contents (内容) on the blackboard and students can respond by writing, too.
The Chinese character test shows that nowadays, many college students’ handwriting has become worse. Many college students do not know how to form words or sentences in Chinese character in the right way. Not only kids, many adults also have met the same problem. They might be able to tell the general form of a certain character. However, if you ask them to spell out the character in detail ( 详 细 地 ), they can’t. On the other hand, they can easily type out the character on a computer.
