  • 24、   For his seventh birthday, Rashard was given a gift that would define his life. His father took him to a music store and told Rashard he could pick out any instrument he wanted. There was just one requirement. Rashard would have to promise he would learn to play.

To that point, Rashard had not had much interest in music. Rashard was far more interested  in playing video games or occasionally baseball with his friends. He had never once thought about playing an instrument. It was hard for him to pick one on his birthday.

Not knowing where to start, Rashard wandered the music store. In the front of the store, he saw all the pianos. Though Rashard’s family did not live in poverty, he knew they were also not rich. He knew that a piano was too expensive, so he walked past the piano room. Next, he found a wall filled with brass instruments. There was a tuba, a saxophone, a trumpet, and something he could not tell. The salesman said it was a French horn. Rashard was not interested in any of those either, because he did not want to put his mouth on anything. He moved on to the large room filled with acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and basses. The salesman invited him to try out one of the guitars, but the only problem was that Rashard’s hands were too small to fit around the neck of the instrument!

Realizing he would not be able to play a guitar, Rashard moved into the next room of the music store. There, he found stringed instruments other than guitars. He picked up a violin, and he realized it was the perfect size for his small hands!

Rashard kept his promise to his dad. He took lessons at the very same store he bought the violin, and he continues to play it as an adult.

Though Rashard has since bought nicer violins, he always remembered the first one his  father bought for him. It was easily the most important gift Rashard ever received. As his father put it, “The gift of music is better than any video game you wanted when you were seven.”

1Which of the following words or phrases would best introduce the last sentence in paragraph2:“It was hard for him to pick one on his birthday.”?

    A.Besides B.However C.Because of this D.Even so

2Based on its use in paragraph 3, the underlined word poverty means being short of________.

    A.patience B.wisdom C.money D.talent

3Rashard’s decision to take the violin was most strongly influenced by ________ .

A.the price of the violin B.the size of the violin

C.the difficulty of playing the violin D.the sound the violin made

4Rashard saw each of the following instruments at the music store EXCEPT________ .

    A.a guitar B.a viola C.a tuba D.a piano

5It can be inferred from the passage that Rashard’s father________ .

A.played the violin B.did not like video games C.was wealthy D.valued music

    What’s your homework?

    Mary, 15

My homework for physics was recycling (回收) used batteries (电池)! Tired but happy, I realized there were lots of used batteries polluting our environment. Let’s collect them and save the Earth?

    Tom, 14

I felt so stressed (紧张的) when I cooked noodles for my parents, which was my homework. I guessed it would be difficult for my parents to eat. But to my surprise, they ate the noodles quickly and praised my cooking skills. But actually, the noodles were not quite as delicious as they said. I understood what family love really is.

    Jack, 14

The most interesting homework I’ve done is planting green beans. I planted five seeds in the pot and watered them twice a day. I expected them to grow, so I watched them every day. A week later, they all grew into beans. Learning is like planting. A good result always comes from great care.

    Cathy, 14

We went to some restaurants during winter vacation to put up posters like “No smoking please” and “don’t waste food” to help people develop good habits. This homework was interesting and helpful. I wish I could do it again.

【1】The students’ homework includes the following EXCEPT _______.

    A.planting trees

    B.putting up posters

    C.cooking for parents

    D.recycling used batteries

【2】Who felt love from parents after doing the homework?

  • 26、The first part of a new science-fiction series (系列剧)was shown on NBC last night. Star Trek is about a spacecraft(宇宙飞船)which travels faster than the speed of light. The show is developed from three ideas about the 22ndcentury. First, we’ll find other life forms great tools which will make amazing things possible.

Let’s think about these predictions. If we find life forms on other planets, will they be intelligent? I hope so. But we human beings might not be friendly – I don’t think we’ll believe in the idea o fpeace one hundred years from now. But this is science fiction, so we can beoptimistic! And Star Trek’s idea of life in the future is ‘communicators’. And we will be ablt to have conversatins with people who are on because you’ll have an electronic notebook. And if you get ill, the doctor won’t have to examine you – a machine will ‘read’ your body. The strangest manchine includes a ‘teleport’ which will take people to a different placein a second!

The ideas are interesting, and in my opinion there’s only one problem with star trek: the acting. The TV company (公司)will have to get better actors. If they do that, the show might be a success. If the acting doesn’t improve, Star Trek won’t last for more than one series. Of course, my prediction may be wrong. I can’t see into the future!

    1】【1What is Star Trek?

    A. A TV play.   B. A popular song.

    C. A spacecraft.   D. An alien.

2】【2What does the underlined word “optimistic” mean?

    A. Lucky and happy.

    B. Hopeful and confident.

    C. Helpful and creative.

    D. Thankful and popular.

3】【3What’s the writer’s opinion about Star Trek?

    A. The life forms on other planets are stupid.

    B. Interesting ideas make a new series popular.

    C. The new series might not be successful without better actors.

4】【4Which would be the best title for the passage?

    A. Aliens on Other Planets.

    B. The Idea of Human Life.

    C. A Science Fiction.

    D. A New Series about Future.

  • 27、   We often reach a point in our life when we should be ready for change that will help us unlock our self-improvement power. However, there’s always something staring at us right under our nose but we don’t see it. The only time we think of unlocking our self-improvement power is when everything gets worst.

When do we realize that we need to change diets? When none of our shirts and jeans fit us. When do we stop eating candies and chocolates? When all of our teeth have fallen off. When do we realize that we need to stop smoking? When our lungs have gone bad. We think about changing only when the whole world is falling apart. We think and feel this way because it is not easy to change, but change becomes more painful when we ignore( ) it.

Unlocking our self-improvement power means unlocking ourselves out of the box of thought that we are just the way we are. It is such a poor excuse for people who fear change.

Jane always tells everyone that she doesn’t have the courage to be with groups of people. She heard her family tell the same things about her to other people. Over the years, that is what Jane has believed. Every time a great crowd come, she steps back and locks herself in a room. Jane not only believes in her story, but lives it!

Exercising three times a week would result in a healthier life. Reading books every day would build up knowledge. And only when we are enjoying unlocking our self-improvement power will we realize that we’re beginning to take things light and become happy.

1The writer mentions the three questions in Paragraph 2 to show that ________.

A.we learn our lessons when we experience pain

B.we are responsible for the problems we meet

C.life fails us when we get into the wrong way

D.life is a long journey full of ups and downs

2According to the passage, what is the key to solving Jane’s problem?

A.She needs to remember why she started.

B.She has to know how to get on with people.

C.She has to realize she is not what she is in her story.

D.She needs to understand the importance of confidence.

3The writer probably agrees that ________.

A.ignoring change can make us happier

B.people change when they find it easy to do that

C.welcoming change in life helps us to become better

D.enjoying self-improvement makes life more difficult

4Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Is it important to take things light?

B.Is it necessary to face challenges?

C.To hold on to the last moment or to give up?

D.To unlock ourselves out of the box or to stay in it?

  • 28、 More and more people believe that technologies are great for learning. Today, teaching tools like iPads are used in a lot of courses, 【1】 language, history and science.

Many teachers are supporters of using iPads in language learning. They say that students now have much more time for discussion in the classroom. Instead of spending valuable class time listening to texts or watching teaching videos. students can do this on their own and come to class prepared for discussion.

The teachers also say that iPads allow students to learn at their own pace. Some students might listen to a dialogue only once and understand it. so they can save time for doing other things. Other students. however. might need to listen to the same dialogue again and again to understand it. Using iPads is especially h  2 to the students who are learning a language at different paces.

The students who are using the new tool in some courses are also happy. They believe that using iPads is a more enjoyable way to learn(like listening to stories and watching movies). The class has become much more interesting and creative.

There are other advantages for students. By using iPads, they can pay more attention to the material and learn more. Teaching notes are s 3 in their iPads and are easy to find. Some students spend more time studying now. 'I can listen to my language material or watch teaching videos on the bus, instead of having to wait till I get home.' a student explained.

But many adults c  4  that technologies like iPads are doing harm to students. They worry that students might use iPads to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. Some believe that iPads may separate students from each other. If a student spends more time watching videos on an iPad. he will have f  5   chances to have face-to-face communication with others.

However, technologies are a  6_ a part of most students' day-to-day lives. As for cheating, teachers can ask students to hand in their iPads when they take exams. Education needs to make c 87 with the times as technology is playing an important part. We should look forward to a wonderful future when iPads and other technologies can add a lot to the classroom.
