24、 I woke up with drool (口水) on my pillow this morning. I wouldn't have minded except it wasn't mine. The alarm clock rang, and I reached over to turn it off. As I laid my face back down on the pillow, I felt the wet, slimy (黏滑的) drool on my pillow case. I opened my eyes and saw a smiling, panting (喘气的), furry face gazing down at me. I tried to get up, but she was too fast. My face was suddenly covered in kisses with one going straight up my nose and another right in my ear. I laughed, reached out and picked up the eight-pound love machine and held her away from my dripping (湿透的) face. It was just another morning in a life with dogs.
Why do we welcome them into our homes and our hearts? We know that we are most likely going to outlive them and have our hearts broken when they age quickly and pass away after ten to fifteen years. We know that there will be vet (兽医) bills, flea baths and enough fur to make a vacuum cleaner cry. We know that our ears will ring from the barking, that we will be picking up poop (大便) every single day and that we will never get to finish a full sandwich again.
Yet, when we are feeling down or blue, there will always be a soft head on our lap needing to be pet. When we get home after a long day's work, there will be a happy face at the door waiting for us. Our lives will be full of balls to throw, bellies to scratch, and love and loyalty that will warm our hearts and uplift our souls.
For thousands of years, dogs have been our best friends. They remain one of the greatest gifts life has ever given us. Even if they can't love us for the rest of our lives, they will always love us for all of theirs.

It is widely agreed that the overuse of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil has caused serious environmental problems.Scientists are trying to find new clean energies that do not pollute the air,the water or the ground.Solar power is one of them.
Solar power is a kind of electricity which is produced by taking energy from the sun, using solar panels. The solar panels are usually fixed on the roofs of houses and buildings. It is the family solar power system. Some countries are even beginning to build solar power plants by setting thousands of solar panels in the places where there is enough sunshine.Solar power has many advantages. The power is easy to get and will never be used up.Whenever it is sunny, there is the power. The power is clean and renewable. It helps to reduce waste and pollution, which is great for the environment. In the areas that are too far away to send electricity to or not easy to build electric power plants, solar power is especially necessary. It enables the people there to use lights,TVs,computers, washing machines, fridges and many other things.
Therefore, more and more countries, such as China, the USA,Japan and India, encourage scientists to develop practical technology to put solar power to use. However, the power is not as widely used as expected.
One of the challenges is that a solar power system needs sunshine.Countries or areas with a lot of rain, like the UK,are not suitable to develop such power systems.Secondly,a solar power plant requires a very large site to fix enough solar panels to collect sunlight and change it into electricity.Maybe an area in the desert would be one of the perfect places for such a plant to build. What’s more, solar panels are expensive at present though the energy itself doesn’t cost anything.
Today scientists are working hard to develop more practical and cheaper solar power systems.Maybe one day solar power will be one of the most important clean energies in our life.

B.The advantages of solar power.
C.The places to build the solar power plants.
D.The difficulties of putting solar power to use widely.
【4】What can we learn from the passage?
A.Solar energy itself is expensive.
B.Solar power will be used up very soon.
C.Solar power is a kind of clean and useful energy.

27、“There’s nothing to discuss,” barked my husband when told him that Rosie, our 17-year-old daughter, had asked whether she could go to Kavos, Greece, for a holiday with her friends. “Of course she can’t. She’s too young to travel without the presence of an adult. It’s completely out of the question.”
So how come found myself standing, two weeks later, at Gatwick Airport. Tearfully, I watched our eldest child disappear through the security checkpoint. In four hours’ time, she would be in Kavos. It’s 2, 500 kilometers away from England!
There comes a time when you have to let your baby go—for many parents, it’s around the age of 17. We know that there is likely to be something wilder than hanging around by the pool and building sandcastles, but the time has come to trust that they’ll look after themselves.
But still felt worried. Rosie tried to put my mind at rest. She said she and her friends would always look after one another and that it really, really was all going to be okay.
After we had waved our last goodbye at the airport, I looked back. She was, to my surprise, looking back at me, too. Teenagers want to cut free, but it’s a frightening business for them, too.
We made Rosie promise to text as soon as she had arrived in Kavos and at least once a day after that. Around 9 a. m. on the first morning, her first message came through. It was twelve hours since I had left her at Gatwick. And all I got was: “I’m here.”
I wish there were safer places than these so-called teen destinations. But like all the dangers that life can hold for them, at some stage, all you can do is warn them, warn them again, warn them once more, and then hope that some of your messages have gotten through.
My daughter got home safely. So did her friends. But Rosie is now talking about a similar journey next year. And my alarm bells have already started ringing.
