  • 24、Minds work together

"Let's brainstorm together!" You might often hear your teachers ask you to have a group discussion to solve a problem. But is brainstorming really a good way to deal with problems, especially creative ones?

Dutch company WeTransfer conducted (进行) a survey of 20,000 people from 197 countries and regions. Most of the participants have creative jobs. They are writers, musicians, photographers, and podcasters (播客博主). The survey results suggested that brainstorming is largely unhelpful for solving a creative challenge.

"It seems that while working together is important to bring an idea to life, it's not that good for shaping ideas in the first place," said Rob Alderson, WeTransfer's former editor in chief.

If we give people enough time and space to think properly (适当地), they will come up with better ideas, Alderson added. Even Alex Osborn, the father of brainstorming, sees spending time alone to think as part of his own creative process.

However, most companies fail to give their employees (员工) a chance to prepare and form their thoughts. They often have many meetings scheduled, which is a killer of creativity, according to the survey. More than 40 percent of participants see meetings as a barrier (障碍) to good thinking.

Spending time alone to think will help you come up with your own ideas and develop independent thinking. This is important when you're making decisions. Nearly 80 percent of participants in We Transfer's survey say they trust their own instincts (直觉) and research when they consider an idea.

1What was the result of the survey?

A.Brainstorming is needed to solve creative problems.

    B.Brainstorming destroys people's creativity.

C.People waste too much time brainstorming.

D.Brainstorming isn't good for solving creative challenges.

2Alex Osborn probably agrees that ________.

A.working together is important for shaping ideas.

B.spending time alone is good for shaping ideas.

C.everyone has his or her own way to shape ideas.

D.companies should hold meetings for the employees to shape ideas.

3What can we learn from paragraph 5?

A.Most employees have no right to speak out.

B.Most companies don't like their employees to think creatively.

C.Meetings are seen as a barrier to creativity.

    D.Most people don't like meetings.

4Which sentence is right according to the passage?

A.We shouldn't work together at any time.

B.We can only be creative when we are alone.

    C.We shouldn't hold meetings.

D.Thinking alone can help us be creative.

  • 25、   Do you think studying in a different country is something that sounds very exciting? Certainly, it is a new experience. However, there are also some problems you will meet. Because you may have difficulty getting used to a new culture. This is culture shock .

Actually, at least four main periods of culture-shock appear. The first period is called “the honeymoon ( 蜜月)”. In this period, you feel excited about living in a different place, and everything seems to be fun. You like everything, and everybody seems to be so nice to you. Also, the happy life in a new culture seems as if it will have no ending.

However, the second period of culture shock appears. This is the “enemy period”. You get to notice that not everything is as good as you had thought it was. You become tired of many things about the new culture. Besides, people don’t treat you as a guest anymore. Everything that seemed to be so wonderful before is now terrible.

After you deal with your enemy feelings, you come to the third period called “getting good again”. In this period, you will feel more active, and you try to develop understanding of everything you don’t understand. The whole situation becomes better; you feel well from the symptoms of the first two periods, and you adapt yourself to the new values and traditions of the new country. You get to see that even the culture is different from your own, it has something that you can learn from.

The last period of culture shock is called “nature”. In this period, you have reached a point where you actually feel good because you have learned enough to understand the new culture. The things that made you feel uncomfortable or strange are now things that you understand. Now you feel comfortable, and you have adapt yourself to the new culture.

In fact, culture shock is something you must experience when living in a foreign country. It does not seem like a very useful experience when you are going through its four periods. However, when you have got used to a new culture, you can more fully enjoy it. You learn how to communicate with other people, and learning about other cultures helps you learn more about yourself.

1When you are studying in a foreign country, what will you do?

A.Discover funny things. B.Have a chance to get rich.

C.Meet advantages and problems. D.Have the feeling of freedom.

2According to paragraph 2, which of the following is TRUE?

A.You mainly experience the good things in a new culture.

B.You feel that the night becomes shorter.

C.You think that you are on a holiday with your family.

D.You believe everything will always be OK.

3If you are in the second period, you will probably feel .

    A.bored B.worried C.relaxed D.surprised

4What is the meaning of the underlined phrase “symptoms” in the passage?

    A.Influences. B.Illness. C.Changes. D.Differences.

5After learning the passage, we will know .

A.how to search the culture shocks

B.how to stop the culture shock happening

C.how to communicate with people in a new culture

D.how to deal with the shock of living in a new culture

Do you or someone you know use a mobile phone? In today’s world, many people use a mobile phone especially businessmen and businesswomen. These people are an important part of the business world and help our economies develop. In fact in some countries even children and the elderly use mobile phones to keep in touch with family and friends. We know how useful it is to have a mobile phone, but do we know how safe these phones are? Some scientists say that mobile phones could be a risk to our health. So, money is being given to scientific re search to find out if mobile phones may be harmful in any way.

What does the future look like? Is a hands - free phone the an swer? The idea behind hands - free sets is simple and maybe they are a safer way for people to communicate. Some scientists have proved that a mobile phone 10 centimeters from your head is far safer than if the headset is right against your ear. Some reports say that hands - free sets have 95% less radiation exposure, while other reports say that hands - free sets expose you to more radiation. Governments and the mobile phone industry are researching the effects, including:

the effects of radio waves on blood pressure and the brain, such as the abilities to concentrate, remember and learn the connections between mobile phone use and brain cancer long - term effects of mobile phone use, looking at health histories of people who have used mobiles since the 1980s. They will be looking at both current mobile phones and the new generation of 4G phones. The results from these studies will help us understand more about the world beyond mobile communications.
