  • 24、阅读与回答问题

The Great Wall of China is called the "Ten thousand Ii Great Wall" in Chinese. In fact it' s more than 6000 kilometers long. It winds its way from west to east across deserts over mountains through valleys till at last it reaches the sea. It is one of the wonders of the world.

The Great Wall has a history of over twenty centuries. The first part of it was built during the Spring and Autumn Period. During the Warring States Period more walls were put up to defend the borders of the different kingdoms. It was during the Qin Dynasty that the kingdom of Qin united the different parts into one empire. To keep the enemy out of his empire Emperor Qin Shihuang had all the walls joined up. Thus the Great Wall came into being.

The Great Wall is wide enough at the top for five horses or ten men to walk side by side. Along the wall are watchtowers where soldiers used to keep watch. Fires were lit on the towers as a warning when the enemy came.

It was very difficult to build such a wall in the ancient days without any modern machines. All the work was done by hand. Thousands of men died and were buried under the wall they built. The Great Wall was made not only of stone and earth but of the flesh and blood of millions of men.

Today the Great Wall has become a place of interest not only to the Chinese but to people from all over the world. Many of them have come to know the famous Chinese saying: "He who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man."

【1】How long is the Great Wall of China?

【5】How do you understand “He who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man”?

  • 25、Musical for the new era

Some of the worlds most famous movies, like The Sound of Music(《音乐之声》)and Singin in the Rain(《雨中曲》), are musicals. These are both very old movies, though. It seemed as if musicals had gone out of fashion.

But La La Land, a new musical by US director Damien Chazelle, 32, had made the genre(类型) popular again. “Brilliantly written and directed, La La Land gives movie musicals life in the 21st century,” Peter Travers wrote for Rolling Stone.

Starring US actor Ryan Gosling, 36, and actress Emma Stone, 28, the movie was released in Chinese mainland on Feb14. Set in the colorful world of Hollywood’s film and music scene, the two characters-a jazz musician and an actress-sing and dance their way to love.

It has made history as the first film to win seven Golden Globe(金球奖) awards. It has also been nominated(提名) for a record-equaling 14 Oscars.

Other popular movies of today are often about violence(暴力),war, drugs(毒品) or politics. Thanks to Chazelles creative style, original music and wonderful location(地点), La La Land has a light feel that will put you in a good mood.

The opening scene, when hundreds of people in a traffic jam start singing , “will be studied and swooned(着迷) over for years to come,” according to Travers. “The very fact that it doesn’t have a strong political message, but is still good enough to win awards, is what makes La La Land so unusual,” Nicholas Barber, wrote for the BBC. “It is intimate(亲切的) and personal and magical.”

1What does Peter Travers think of La La Land?

    A. It is better than The Sound of Music.

    B. Its genre is out of fashion.

    C. It is not a good story.

    D. It makes musicals popular again.

2Which of the following is NOT true about La La Land?

    A. It was directed by a 32-year-old US director.

    B. It starred US actor Ryan Gosling and actress Emma Stone.

    C. It’s a love story about a jazz musician and an actress.

    D. It has won seven Golden Globe and 14 Oscars.

    3La La Land contains_______.

    A. original music   B. war scenes

    C. violent scenes   D. a strong political message

4According to Nicholas Barber, La La Land ________.

    A. is a very good movie   B. has an impressive opening scene

    C. lacks magic and personality   D. needs strong political message

  • 26、The game of telephone is a classic ice breaker and party game. It’s easy to set up and a lot of fun to play. You and your friends will try to pick a word or phrase, “pass it on” by whispering(耳语) it to someone next to you, and have fun seeing how much it changed during the game. All you will need to play is a couple of friends, a word or phrase, and a whisper.

    Get everyone in place.

Although the game of telephone is simple to play, you will need to arrange(安排) the players in a way that supports the game. Have everyone stand in either a line or a circle. Players should be spaced far enough apart that they won’t overhear the word when it isn’t their turn. Proper position is important when playing telephone.

    Start the game.

Choose a person to start the game. Make the person think of a word or give a certain word to him or her. And he or she should whisper it to the person next to them. The pronunciation of the word should sound like many others’ as the idea is to see how much it changes by the game’s end. Once the word has been told to the next person, they will whisper it to the person next to them.

    Continue whispering the word.

Players continue listening to the word and repeating what they think they heard to the person next to them. This is done until the last person in the line or circle is told the word. Every person should have heard the word or phrase by the end of the game.

See how much the word changed.

Once the last person hears the word or phrase, they will say what they think they heard out-loud. This is compared to the original word that the game started with. This is the moment when all the players get to learn just how much the word or phrase changed through their “telephone line”.

  • 27、In one way, it is the “greatest” drone ever. In another, though, it is the opposite of what a drone should be. Drone should be very lazy. They don’t have to work. Only their sister should be busy pollinating (传授花粉) and producing honey. However, for this drone, pollination is the very reason fur its existence (存在).

The drone, in fact is an invention of Ejiro Miyako. Miyako is a scientist from Japan. Many people, including Miyako have been worried about the future of food industry. Pollinating insects, especially bees, are falling in number. As a result, some plants can’t get pollinated and there will be fewer plants for us to eat. Scientists have been working hard to increase the number of bees. Unfortunately, they have had little success. Perhaps, Miyako thinks, it is time to build some robot bees instead.

Miyako’s bee, in fact, does not look much like a bee. It is based on a quad-copter. Miyako has put some brush hair on it. The hair is covered in special glue. They are able to pick up and hold grains of pollen(花粉) until they brush up against something else.

At the moment, Miyako’s robot bee still needs help from human operators. That’s because it can’t see where its target (目标) are. In the next step, Miyako will install visual recognition (视觉识别) software on his bee. After that, the robot bee will be able to see by itself.

1In the first paragraph, the underlined “drone” refers to a kind of ________.

    A. flower B. bee C. honey D. software

2Ejiro Miyako is worried that ________ in the future.

    A. we may be short of food

    B. natural bees may not produce honey

    C. his robot bee can’t see

    D. natural drones can’t pollinate plants

    3Ejiro Miyako’s invention is used to ________.

    A. produce honey B. watch natural bees work

    C. pollinate plants D. increase the number of natural bees

4Which of the following is a must for Ejiro Miyako’s invention?

    A. Pollen. B. Drones and their sisters.

    C. Brush hair. D. Visual recognition software.

5According to the article, what will Ejiro Miyako do in the next step?

    A. Produce more robot bees.

    B. Fill his garden with robot bees.

    C. Allow robots to pick up pollen.

    D. Make his robot bees work independently.
