21、“USA? Britain? Which country is better to study in?”
We often hear such discussions. As important, Without, thousands, hot, nearer, why, much, away, Nothing, yearChina opens its door, studying abroad has become a dream for many Chinese students. They would like to know the world well.
It’s true that studying abroad can help students develop themselves. Their foreign language skills will be improved and it may be easier to find jobs.
But there are problems that should be considered. Language is the first. Students must spend a lot of time learning another language and getting used to a different culture.
Students must also learn to live without parents’ care and deal with all kinds of things they haven’t had to do before, like looking after themselves. There are reports about Chinese students abroad running into an ocean of difficulties and giving up finally. When they have to take care of themselves, it is hard for students to study well.
Finally, studying abroad brings a heavy burden(负担)to the family. For most Chinese parents, the cost of studying abroad is very high. But is it worth it?
We know that there are many famous people who have achieved success through their hard work in China.
Liu Xiang is a good example. Once an American teacher invited him there, but he refused.
He kept training hard with his Chinese teacher. He surprised the world when he won a gold medal at the Athens Olympic Games. So when you wonder which country is better to study in, think again.

Dear Tom,
How are you doing? Do you know anything about Chinese knots? Maybe you know nothing about them. It doesn't matter, I will tell you. In China, people usually make them with red silk, cloth and other materials. They look very beautiful in the shape of diamond (钻石), about 5 inches(英寸) long and 4 inches wide. In China, these knots stand for friendship, love and good luck. People can either give them as gifts to friends or hang them in the house as decorations. I'm good at making Chinese knots. If anyone in your country wants to know more about Chinese knots, let them write to me, I will try my best to introduce(介绍) our Chinese knots to anyone who is interested in Chinese culture.
【1】Chinese knots are usually made of red silk, cloth and other materials.

24、How to say hello in Japanese depends on (取决于) when you say it. This is very much like different greetings in English at different times of the day or night. In Japanese culture, it also depends on whether (是否) you are on the phone or you are close to the person you are greeting. We don’t get formal (正式) with our friends. We seldom greet them with “Good morning” or “Good evening”. A “Hi” is enough.
The most popular and most well-known translation for “Hello” is still “Konnichiwa”, but it is not exactly how to say hello in Japanese. Perhaps it is not the most suitable (适当的) word for it. In fact, the correct greeting in English for “Konnichiwa” is “Good day” or “Good noon”, and I am sure you wouldn’t like greeting people with a “Good day” at any time, and Japanese also don’t like to say “Konnichiwa” when they want to say “Hello”.
Then what should we do? Let’s do it the way the Japanese do. Use “Ohaiyo Gonzaimasu” when it’s noon and “Konbanwa” to greet somebody in the afternoon. Things are different when you are on the phone. Just say “Moshi, Moshi”, which is actually similar (相似) to saying “Hello” over the phone, because one doesn’t often use “Good morning” or “Good afternoon” or “Good evening” right after picking up the phone. One invariably uses the sweet old “Hello”.
Next time, I’ll tell you something about my life in Japan.
【1】How do Japanese people greet each other in the afternoon?
A.By saying “Konbanwa”.
B.By saying “Moshi, Moshi”.
C.By saying “Konnichiwa”.
D.By saying “Ohaiyo Gonzaimasu”.
【2】Which of the following is TRUE according to the writer?
A.Japanese people are not very friendly to each other,
B.Japanese culture is similar to American culture.
C.People don’t need to be polite to their close friends.
D.Japanese people don’t like using “Konnichiwa” as a greeting for the whole day.
【3】The underlined word “invariably” may mean “________”.
A.likely
B.maybe
C.always
D.sometimes

【5】The best title for the passage should be “________”.
A.How to say hello
B.How to greet people in Japanese

25、 Once upon a time, there were two brothers who lived in the forest. The elder brother was always unkind to his 【1】 (young) brother. He always took all the good food and good clothes.
One day, the elder brother went into the deep forest in search of firewood to sell in the market. If you spare me, I will provide you 【4】 golden apples." The elder brother agreed but was feeling disappointed with how many apples the tree gave 【5】 (he). He threatened(威胁) to cut the whole tree if it didn't provide him with more apples. But instead of 【6】 (give) more apples, the tree showered him with 【7】 /ˈhʌndrədz/ of tiny needles(针). The brother fell to the ground, crying in pain.
Soon, the younger brother became worried and went to search for his elder brother. He searched until he found him at the tree lying in pain with hundreds of needles on his body. He rushed to him and started to take each needle off with love. Once the needles were out, the elder brother apologized for treating his younger brother so 【8】 (bad).
