22、 Many ordinary people ranging from volunteers to media workers have dedicated (奉献) themselves to fighting the novel coronavirus. They prove that ordinary people can still do their part during difficult times.
On Feb 12, Dalian (not his real name) was taking a train to Changsha, Hunan, for a business trip. While on the train, he went into a carriage (车厢) to have lunch and chose to remain in the carriage. He did not realize that the carriage was only for people heading to Wuhan.
Several hours later, when the train arrived in Wuhan, Dalian was asked to get off, as he was in the special carriage. Although he was surprised, he didn’t want to cause trouble and got off the carriage with just a single bag.
As Wuhan had been locked down because of the epidemic (疫情), Dalian couldn’t find a hotel to stay in. Feeling at a loss, he saw a notice online looking for volunteers to work in hospitals. The payment was 500 yuan a day. Dalian decided to give it a try.
He soon became a volunteer at Wuhan No. 1 Hospital. He was responsible for taking out trash, mopping (拖) the floor, disinfecting (消毒) the hospital, dealing with used protective suits and bringing meals to patients.
The young man, reportedly from northeast China, had to work 12 hours every day, changing his protective suit three times a day. While working, he couldn’t drink anything or go to the bathroom. He also had to have close contact with infected patients, which is risky.
Dalian was afraid of getting infected at first. “When I entered the wards (病房), I was kind of frozen (僵硬的) and felt like I couldn’t move,” he said. But after seeing more patients get better, his fear gradually went away.

23、There was a 365-year-old oak tree by the sea. For it, each year was just like a day, because it only slept in winter. One summer afternoon, some mayflies(蜉蝣)were flying happily around it. Then the oak tree talked to one of them, “You must be so sad. Your whole life lasts just one day.” “Not at all,” the mayfly replied. “Things around me are so bright, warm and beautiful. They make me happy.” “But only for one day,” the oak tree said. Hearing that, the mayfly said, “You may have thousands of days, but I have thousands of moments. In my opinion, we have the same time to live.” Then it flew away.
Soon, winter came, and the oak tree went to sleep. Around Christmas, it had a dream. In the dream, the oak tree was with all things it loved, both small and great. As it grew bigger and taller into the sky, it felt that its roots(根)were free. It was a wonderful feeling. The oak tree felt like it was in heaven(天堂).

24、 If you live in the United States, the law says you can't have a full-time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part time after school or on weekends, and during summer you can work 40 hours each week. Does all that mean that if you are younger than 14, you can't earn your own money? Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can earn money by doing lots of things.
Valerie, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people's yards. Lena, 13, makes money by knitting (织) dog sweaters and selling them to her neighbors, and Reisa said she had started taking art classes and showing her work to people. People have asked her to draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine, 13, writes articles for different magazines!
Earning is learning. By working to earn your own money, you are learning the skills you will need to succeed in life. These skills can include things like getting along with others, using technology and using your time. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than earning it; however, when you make your own money, you don't have to depend on someone else. The five dollars that you earn will probably make you feel a lot better in your hand than the twenty dollars you ask for.
