六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Some people have a very poor sense of direction. Unluckily, I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time.

When I was a little girl, I never dared ask strangers the way. And so I used to walk round in circles and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.

Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive helpless or even wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong directions. If anyone ever asks me the way somewhere, I always say, “Sorry, I am a stranger here.”

Once on my way to work I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual replay. But just as I walked on only a few steps, I realized that he had asked me the way to my office building. However, I had no time to return back and look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I did not want to keep him waiting.

When I just got to my office, the secretary showed in the man who had asked me for directions. Imagine how embarrassed I was and how surprised he was when we saw each other at the first sight!

  • 22、Making friends is a skill. Like most skills, it improves with practice. If you want to meet people and make friends, you must be willing to take some actions. You must first go where there are people. You won’t make friends by staying at home alone.

Join a club or a group, talking with those who like the same things as you do is much easier, or join some activities.

Many people are nervous when talking to new people. After all meeting strangers means facing the unknown. And it’s human nature to feel a bit uncomfortable about the unknown.

Most of our fears about dealing with new people come from doubts (怀疑)about ourselves. We imagine other people are judging us, finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But don’t forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept yourself as you are and try to put the other people at ease. You’ll both feel more comfortable.

Try to act self-confidence (自信)even if you don’t feel that way when you enter a room full of strangers, such as a new classroom. Walk tall and straight, look directly at other people and smile.

If you see someone you’d like to speak to, say something. Don’t wait for the other person to start a conversation.

Just meeting someone new doesn’t mean that you’ll make friends with that person — friendships are based on mutual(相互的)liking and “give and take”. They take time and effort to develop. And there are things that keep a new friendship from growing.

【1】You can not make friends ________.

    A.if you take actions

    B.by going to people

    C.if you avoid(避免) meeting people

    D.if you won’t join a club

【2】The underlined part in paragraph 3 means ________.

    A.the person you know

    B.the person you don’t know

    C.the person you understand

    D.the person you don’t understand

【3】According to the passage, it’s quite ________ for people to get nervous when meeting someone new.

    A.good

    B.exciting

    C.interesting

    D.natural

    【4】Friendships are based on ________.

    A.liking each other

    B.meeting more people

    C.talking and smiling

    D.looking directly at other people

【5】In paragraph 5, the underlined part means ________.

A.even if you are not self-confident

    B.even if you are self-confident

C.Even if you are not comfortable

    D.even if you are comfortable

    【6】When meeting someone new, ________.

A.Try to make him feel easy

B.Judge him too this or too that

    C.Not to talk with him

D.let him talk to you first

  • 23、About ten years ago when I was an undergraduate in college in New York, I was working as a practice student at my university's Museum of Natural History. One day while I was working at the cash register in the gift shop, I saw an elderly couple come in with a little girl in a wheelchair.

As I looked closer at this girl, I saw that she was seated on her chair. I then realized she had no arms or legs, just a head, neck and the trunk of the human body. She was wearing a little white dress with the patterns of red roses and yellow dots.

As the couple wheeled her up to me I was looking down at the register. I turned my head toward the girl and gave her a wink(眨眼示意). As I took the money from her grandparents, I looked back at the girl, who was giving me the most beautiful, largest smile I have ever seen.

All of a sudden her handicap was gone and all I saw was this beautiful girl, whose smile just melted me and almost instantly gave me a completely new sense of what life is all about. I immediately felt full of hope and confidence. She took me, a poor, unhappy college student, into her world, a world of smiles, love and warmth.

That was ten years ago, but I still remember it clearly as if it happened just yesterday. I'm a successful business person now and whenever I get down and think about the troubles of the world, I think about that little girl and the remarkable lesson about life that she taught me.

1The writer  was  ________ ten years ago.

    A. a clerk working in a museum

    B. a teacher teaching in a college

    C. a worker working in a university

    D. a university student who had not yet taken a degree

2Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. The girl was poor and sad.

    B. The girl faced life bravely.

    C. The writer knew the girl very well.

    D. The writer made friends with the girl at last.

3What does the underlined word “handicap” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A. Life difficulty.   B. Physical disability.

    C. Failure in work.   D. Troublesome problem.

4How did the writer probably feel before meeting the disabled girl?

    A. She felt full of hope.   B. She felt life was beautiful.

    C. She was poor and unhappy.   D. She was filled with confidence.
