22、For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests like the Amazon might have reacted to the cold dry climates of the ice age, but until now, no one has reached a satisfying answer.
Rainforests like the Amazon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to slow global warming. Nowadays, the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tons of CO2 each year; equal to the total amount of CO2 giving off in the U. K. each year. But how will the Amazon react to future climate change? If it gets drier, will it still survive and continue to draw down CO2? Scientists hope that they will be able to learn in advance how the rainforest will manage in the future by understanding how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past.
On the one hand, getting into the Amazon rainforest and collecting information are very difficult. On the other hand, to study past climate, scientists need to look at fossilized pollen (花粉) kept in lake mud. Going back to the last ice age means drilling deep down into lake sediments (沉淀物), which requires specialized equipment and heavy machinery. There are very few roads and paths, or places to land helicopters and planes. Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest, but this still leaves vast areas between the rives completely unsampled. So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provide enough information to prove how the Amazon rainforest reacts to climate change.
【1】Scientists have been arguing about how the Amazon might have ________ the cold dry climates of the ice age.
A.changed in response to
B.destroyed
C.influenced
D.protected
【2】Rainforests are important for ________ CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to slow global warming.

A.the U.S.A.
B.the U.K.

A.draw down CO2
B.still protect the soil
C.will get smaller
D.will manage in the future
【5】The way to go back to last ice age is to ________.
A.get into the forest

23、
When you hear "single-use (一次性使用)", you might think of something like chopsticks (筷 子) from fast food restaurants. You use them once, throw them away and forget about them. But when we forget about them, we also forget that we're creating waste.
"Single-use" was chosen as Collins Dictionary's "Word of the Year" for 2018. The idea of single-use is not just about real objects that we can touch or see. It also includes the ways that we communicate.
On social media (社交媒体), we see picture, news and articles everywhere. We look, laugh and keep scrolling (滚屏). We never look twice. This is called single-use media. It's all about sharing the small things of our lives. For example, I know what restaurant all of my friends went to last night. However, I don't know their deepest thoughts and feelings about serious problems. I don't even know what their dinner tasted like. I look at their picture and give them a "Like". Then I "throw it away" and keep scrolling.
Social media nowadays make it very easy for us to forget what we have lost. Before we use social media and send messages on the phone, we communicated by talking. We had to remember or write down important things. Many people also communicated by writing letters, which took time and energy. They had to think carefully about each sentence. People treasured (珍惜) and kept letters for years. A letter was serious. It's a shared piece of the writer's spirit.
On social media, we treat our friends and family like cheap chopsticks. It's simple and efficient (有效率的) in use, but we don't spend time sharing little pieces of our thoughts and feelings any more.

【4】According to paragraph four, we have lost ________ after social media becomes popular.
A.the ability to talk with others
B.the possibility to send messages
C.the real communication with thoughts and feelings
【5】What can you infer from the end of the passage?
A.We should treasure our friends and family by telling them how we think and feel.
B.Friends are like chopsticks, and we should use them only when we need them.
C.There is no need to save the letters from friends because they are meaningless.

Secondly, these fuels will not last forever. One day, we will r【3】 out of these fuels. Scientists are looking for new k【4】 of energy. One is heat from the Earth. We know that the centre of the Earth is very hot. We cannot r【5】 the centre of the Earth, but in some places the heat from the Earth’s centre comes to the surface of the Earth. Perhaps you k【6】 about some of these places. One place is volcanoes (火山). It is very d【7】 to go near an active volcano, so we cannot use the energy from this. A【8】 kind of heat from the Earth is hot springs (温泉). In these places, hot water comes to the surface of the Earth. If this water is near a town, the hot water can be sent in pipes directly to people’s houses to heat them. In Iceland, this is a common w【9】 to heat houses. In Australia, scientists are looking for ways to make energy using hot rocks under the surface of the Earth. They want to pump water onto the hot rocks. When the water hits the rocks, it makes steam (蒸汽). The steam is piped to power stations where it is used to make electricity (电). The electricity can then be sent all o【10】 the country.
