  • 21、It’s normal for students’ marks(分数) to fall. Sometimes it is because of situations(情况) outside school, such as problems at home. Sometimes it is only because the exams get harder.

When your marks start to fall, you should try talking to your teacher. He or she will be able to help you with the subjects if you find them difficult. Stop comparing(比较) yourself with other students. It does not matter if other students get higher marks than you. But you should do your best. In class, you should write the most important things in a short form and remember them. Before each exam, you should go through(复习) your notes(笔记).

Go through your short notes again just before the exam. It may take hard work and your marks may not improve quickly. But if you have confidence(信心), soon your marks will begin to climb again.

  • 22、   The quick action of Nick helped five people escape a fire on Hope Road. Nick said he usually left his house about 5:30 a.m. to do morning exercises, but that day he decided to stay at home to get his daughter ready for school. As he looked at his neighbor’s house, he realized that it was on fire. “I saw smoke and flames and ran over and started beating on the side of the house, shouting, ‘Your house is on fire! Your house is on fire!’” Nick remembered it was at about 9 a.m. that the firefighters put out the fire.

Beverly Penny and her husband, Clark, along with their younger daughters, were sleeping in the living room next to the kitchen when they heard Nick beating on the walls. She opened the bedroom door and black smoke came in. She managed to get her kids out. Her dog tried to hide under the bed, but Penny caught it by the leg and threw it out of the door. However, chickens in one of the rooms weren’t so lucky.

Firefighters got the call at about 7:05 a.m. “When we arrived with our fire trucks, there were heavy flames outside on the house.” Jerry said. He called Nick a hero, saying that without his quick responses, the result could have been much worse. “The firefighters were fast,” Nick said, “They arrived here within about three minutes.”

“They did a great job and I can’t thank them enough.” Penny said, then looked at what remained in the house and shook her head as tears rolled down in her eyes. “Everything I have is gone. Luckily nobody was hurt in the fire.” She said the fire could have been caused by an electrical problem. “We’ve been having problems with mice, so that we could have had something to do with it.” she added.

1What do you know about Nick?

A.He left house at 5:30 am that day. B.He has a son who goes to school.

C.He lives next to Beverly Penny. D.He had a day off on Thursday.

    A.At about 5:30 am. B.At about 7 am.

    C.At about 8 am. D.At about 9 am.

    4We can infer that ____   __.

A.Jerry is a firefighter B.Jerry found the fire

C.Jerry called the police D.Jerry helped Nick escape the fire

5According to Penny, which of the following might be criticized(批评) for the fire?

    A.Her dog. B.Her husband. C.Her chickens. D.Some mice.

  • 23、The Big Lottery is giving money to groups of teenagers between 14 and 19 who want to become active citizens. The teenagers who would like to help make the area you live in better, cleaner, safer and friendlier can actually get money for improving your local community(社区). We have $80,000 to give away. We are looking for young people to take part in schemes(规划)and projects near where they live.

Here are a few easy things you could do to get started.

Meeting the neighbours: Everybody needs good neighbours. Knock on people’s door and find out what they would like to improve in your area. Set a date for a meeting and then make some plans together. If you don't want to go to their houses, then you could always put a note through their doors.

Neighbourhood Watch: Neighbourhood watch schemes are very popular in the UK. If you go away on holiday and leave your house, it’s very nice to know that a neighbour is keeping an eye on it. It’s a good way to make the area you live in safer. You could set one up easily and quickly.

Lending a hand: There are often elderly people living in the neighbourhood who may not be able to do the things that you can. Offer to do their shopping once a week, look after their garden for them or maybe walk their dog.

No littering: Nobody likes picking up other people's rubbish, but a clean street can make all the difference. Take turns to go out once or twice a week and see what you can find. You never know that one day you might find something valuable.

Recycling: Nearly two-thirds of your rubbish can be recycled. Some areas have already provided places for people to recycle bottles, tins, plastic and paper. Find out if this is done in your neighbourhood. If it’s not, do something about it.

So go on...Just tell us what kind of project you want to join in. Then well send you more details. Take positive action and help make your neighbourhood a better place to live.

  • 24、We often hear stories of animals rescuing people. But now someone has managed to return the favour(恩惠).

The event took place on one snowy January morning. Thomas Smith was walking his dog, Jack, in the park. “As I was walking, I just saw Jack running onto the ice towards the ducks in the middle, and then he fell into the water and couldn’t climb out,” said Smith. He realized he had no choice but to try and save his dog. “Someone else told me the lake was only one-metre deep, but it was at least twice that. I had to break my way through the 6cm ice. Finally, I got Jack by the neck and pulled him out. I don’t think I’d ever felt so cold by the time we got back to dry land. And when we got there, everyone was asking if Jack was okay — no one was particularly worried about me!”

A neighbour, Julie Brown, saw it all happen. “The dog went onto an icy lake. All of a sudden, it started to go under. There were crowds of people around, and they were all shouting and screaming. Before I knew it, the owner (Smith) was in the water forcing his way through the ice. I can’t begin to imagine how cold it was. Everyone was very nervous, but he was as cool as a cucumber — he just crawled back out, put the dog on its lead(皮带), and went home.”

Many regard him as a hero, but Mr. Smith is quitelaid-back(安详放松的) about it. “Most dog owners are the same as me. They would do what I did without a second thought. But in the future, I’m going to make sure he’s on a lead near any icy ponds.”

Pets are members of our family. Would you do the same for them?

A.Mr. Smith met Jack in the park.

B.Mr. Smith ran after Jack on the ice.

C.Jack fell from the ice into the water.

【3】In the last paragraph, the writer asks a question to ________.

    A.suggest keeping pets for fun

B.remind people to put their dogs on the leads

C.encourage people to take good care of their pets
