  • 21、I have tried to write a ghost story that won’t make you unhappy with yourselves, with each other, with seasons, or with me. I hope it haunts your houses pleasantly.

    Charles Dickens

One Christmas Eve, old Scrooge and Bob were working busily in his office. It was a cold, foggy day. The fog was so thick that the houses opposite were like ghosts. It was only three o’clock in the afternoon, but it was already quite dark.

“Merry Christmas, Uncle! God bless you!” cried a happy voice. It was Scrooge's nephew.

    “Bah!" said Scrooge. "Humbug(骗人的话)! ”

“Christmas is a humbug! Surely you don’t mean that, uncle.” said his nephew.

“I do.” said Scrooge “Merry Christmas! What reason have you got to be merry? You are poor.”

“OK, then,” replied the nephew cheerfully. “What reason have you got to be sad? You are rich. Don't be angry, Uncle!” said his nephew.

“What else can I be?” answered the uncle. "I live in a world of fools! Merry Christmas! What's Christmas time to you? It's a time for paying bills without money. It's time for finding yourself a year older, but not richer. Everyone who goes around saying “Merry Christmas” should have his tongue cut out. Yes, he should!"

“Uncle! Please don't say that!” said the nephew. “I've always thought of Christmas time as a good time, a kind, and a charitable happy time. And so, Uncle Christmas has never put any gold or silver in my pocket, but I think it has done me good. And it will do me good. And I say, God bless it!”

Bob, standing in the corner of the room, applauded( 鼓掌). He realized his mistake every soon, and went quickly back to his work, but Scrooge had heard him.

“One more sound from you. Bob Cratchit," said Scrooge,” and you'll cerebrate Christmas by losing your job!”

“Don't be angry with him, Uncle. Come and have dinner with us tomorrow.”

    “No.” said Scrooge.

“I'm sorry you don't want to cerebrate Christmas. But I do. So a Merry Christmas, Uncle!”

    “Good afternoon!” said Scrooge.

“And happy New Year!” said his nephew.

  • 23、Time is not a fixed object. The idea of time in any given culture is largely a product created by beliefs, traditions, and values. In some cases, time is thought of as formless and is based on what is going on at the moment, rather than as a planned object. Others regard time as a machine: a real thing which is fixed, which can be divided into schedules (日程安排) and can be wasted.

Similarly, cultures are also likely to think of the passing of time in different ways as well. A society can be moved towards a specific (特定化的) understanding of history. Many cultures, such as British, Native American, Greek, French, Japanese, and some other Asian cultures, take the past, cultural history, and traditions as having the most importance, and use them as a guide in making present-day decisions. Some cultures see the present moment as the most important. Tradition holds little importance, and planning for the future is not the most important thing, but rather the present time is more valued, and these kinds of lifestyles are relaxed. Other societies can be future-oriented (关注未来的), and place an additional focus on planning and forward movement, and the present activities are treated as a bridge to this future goal. This is the common agreement in the United States.

How a person thinks of time can be understood in the way they work together with others. Someone with a focus on the future will hold schedules and times to be very important, as they are necessary for moving on to the next step. However, someone who lives more in the present may consider a certain meeting time as not fixed. In Italy and in many Arab countries, it is normal for people to be 30 minutes late for a meeting. It is different in the United States or Britain, for example, where lateness is accepted only up to 5 or 10 minutes.

The concept (概念) of time, and its flexibility (灵活多变), meaning, and even the nature of its existence (存在) is something which is deeply laid in the base of any culture. It is very important when entering into an agreement with someone, whether socially, or in a business setting, to realize that they may have a different idea about the importance of deadlines and schedules. No one can be right or wrong in their own way, but still people can be accidentally insulted (冒犯) as a result of a misunderstanding.

D.old countries have a long history

    【3】Which example best describes a present-oriented culture?

    A.Making a plan for tomorrow's work.

B.Planning a tour to the Forbidden City.

    C.Eating dumplings during a festival.

七、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 25、The most important day in my life was the 9th of April, 1987. That was the day I p1 my driving test.

I was very worried and drove very b2 on the way to the test centre. My driving teacher said, “If you drive l3 this during the test, you will fail. Don’t be afraid.” But that just made me more afraid!

The tester was very serious. He didn’t smile once as we got into the car. I drove quite well during the test and began to feel that I was s4 to pass. Then, the tester began a5 me questions about driving. He asked me, “What will you do if a dog runs out in front of your car?”I answered, and he sat there, unhappily, for a w6 and said,“Yes, maybe that is what you will do... but what will a good driver do?” By then, I thought I had failed the test. We drove b7 to the test centre and as I got out of the car the tester handed me a piece of paper. It had “PASSED” w8on it. I was so s9that I started to laugh but  the tester still didn ’t even smile.  I  was  too  happy to care.

Now, I have my own car and every Sunday I drive to a friend’s house or into the centre of the city. I still get a little afraid, though, when I think of my d10test and the tester’s  face.
