Why is “buy things” in Chinese spoken as maidongxi (buy east and west) , but not mainanbei (buy south and north)?
One theory (假说) says maidongxi has 【1】 to do with the five elements (要素): jin (metal), mu (wood), shui (water), huo (fire) and tu (earth). In Chinese culture, the four 【2】 have to do with these elements. East matches wood, west matches metal, south matches fire, and north matches water. If someone carries nan (south) and bei (north) in a basket, it means to 【3】 water and fire, which is not even possible. But if one puts dong (east) and xi (west) in one’s basket, of course they can carry metal and wood.
There are also more common explanations.
One says that in the Tang Dynasty (唐代), there 【4】 two popular markets in Chang’an, the capital of China at that time. One was called the East Market, and the 【5】was called the West Market. When shopping, people usually went to the East Market 【6】, and then went to the West Market. As time went 【7】, people started to describe shopping as “buying east and west.”
The last theory is about China’s trading history. Around the 15th 【8】, China began trading with the world, and most of its foreign goods (货物) happened to come from the east (Japan) and west (Arabia). Markets 【9】 “things from the east and the west”. It was short for “east and west” 【10】.

Suddenly from the shadow of a dark building, a tall man with a sharp knife in his right hand ran out at her. “Good morning, Lady.” the man said in a low voice, “I don’t think you wish to die here!” “What do you want?” Agatha asked.
“Your earrings. Take them off!” Agatha suddenly had a bright idea. She tried to cover her necklace with the collar(衣领) of her overcoat while she used the other hand to take off both of her earrings, and then she quickly threw them on the ground.
“Take them and let me go.” she said. The robber was uncertain. He saw that the girl didn’t care for the earrings at all, only trying to protect the necklace. He realized the necklace would cost more, so he said, “Give me your necklace.”
“Oh, sir. It’s not worth much. Please let me keep it.”
“Stop talking rubbish. Quick!”

22、I was doing the work in the garden yesterday. It was a soft evening and I was making the most of it when I heard a neighbor’s voice coming from the path out of our garden.
“That’s no place to be sleeping!” he said.
I found there was a man lying on his back on the path with his eyes closed. I recognized him. I had seen him doing the drunkard’s (酒鬼) walk along that path several times.
I stopped to walk out. “Do you need some help?” I asked.
He opened his eyes and said, “Probably.” Then he told me because of arthritis (关节炎) he couldn’t walk well at the most of times. I thought I should do it when he asked to help him go home where he lived a few hundred metres away.
I tried to let him walk under his own strength with me guiding him but that was getting us nowhere. It was easier to carry him, but that would be a real insult (侮辱) to him. So, I held his left hand with my left hand and grabbed his belt with my right hand. Then we started walking slowly.
On the way he told me his name, what he had worked as, what holidays he had been, how wonderful his granddaughter was, what his wife’s name was — and what a hard time she would give him when he got home!
Thank goodness! His wife wasn’t in when we walked forty-five minutes back to his home.
If we wait until we feel good about helping before we help, then people will go unhelped and we will become the ones who end up walking on by.

23、"I never knew before, Cecil, that you were so fond of drawing," said Aunt Sophia, as she looked over the shoulder of her nephew, who was busy with his pencil. "You really have made great progress."
"I need to do so," cried Cecil, "if I am to carry off the prize for drawing, as I am determined to do this term."
"I should have thought," said the aunt, "that you had little chance against Lee. He is an artist's son, and has used the pencil from his cradle.(摇篮) "
"That will double the pleasure of beating him!" cried Cecil, "I'm working now at this four hours a day; he never draws more than two."
"You are not neglecting(忽视) your Latin for it, I hope? You have had the Latin prize every term for these three years past," said Aunt Sophia.
"Yes," replied Cecil, with a proud smile; "there is no boy in our class who can match me in that, though Russell is now working hard. But I am not content with one prize: I cannot rest till I have won the paint-box for drawing, of which Tom Lee makes so sure. It would be glorious to beat the son of an artist on his own ground!"
"Take care," said his aunt, "that you do not lose the Latin prize in trying for what you are not likely to gain.”
On the evening of the day on which the names of the prize-winners were read out, Cecil came home from school long-faced. His looks told his aunt enough to make her spare him the pain of questions; but his little sister Rosey was not so thoughtful.
"Cecil," she cried, "tell me, are you to get the two prizes?"
"No, not even one. I was so busy trying to beat Lee that I could not hold my ground against Russell." Cecil threw himself into a sofa in an angry mood.
