  • 22、   Vanuatu is an island nation in the South Pacific. It is one of the smallest countries in the world. But for those who are interested in adventure and sport, there is a lot to do. Vanuatu’s islands offer visitors two of the most exciting and dangerous activities in the world: volcano(火山) surfing and land diving.

    Volcano Surfing

On Tanna Island, Mount Yasur rises 300 meters into the sky. Yasur is an active volcano, and it erupts(爆发) almost every day, sometimes several times a day. For centuries, people have climbed this mountain to visit the top. Recently, people have also started climbing Yasur to surf the volcano. In some ways, volcano surfing is like surfing in the sea, but in other ways it’s very different. Volcano surfers try to escape the erupting volcano- without getting hit by flying rocks! It’s fast, fun and dangerous- the perfect extreme sport.

    Land Diving

Most people are familiar with bungee jumping, but do you know bungee jumping started on Pentecost Island in Vanuatu and is almost fifteen centuries old? The activity, first called land diving, is part of a religious ceremony. A man ties tree vines (藤) to his legs. • 23、Best Ways to Improve Online Experience

    Zhao Yuchen, Beijing

To me, the biggest headache about studying online is my poor internet connection. During one online class, I couldn't hear my English teacher's voice and I had to reconnect. It wasted lots of time. Since then, I have checked my network before class every day and asked other family members not to use the internet while I'm in class.

    Qiu Ziyin, Shenzhen

During the first day of studying online, I was excited and listened carefully. But I soon realized that my self-discipline (自律) was weak. I've set screen time for all of my electronic devices. At night, I do preview (预习) work for the next day instead of playing with my mobile phone.

    Zhang Penghui, Heilongjiang

Online learning takes strong self-discipline and willpower. There are lots of distractions (分心) while studying at home. My mom likes to offer me snacks and drinks, which sometimes distracts me from listening during my classes. A quiet room and clean desk can help us stay focused.

    Zhao Jiawen, Shanghai

It's important to know how to choose wisely when we pick online courses. For example, I had difficulty understanding certain English grammar points, so I searched for key words on our national cloud learning platform and watched several videos from teachers across China. It's good for us to get different teachers.

1Who does preview work for the next day at night?

    A.Qiu Ziyin. B.Zhao Yuchen. C.Zhao Jiawen. D.Zhang Penghui.

2Zhao Yuchen ________while having class online.

A.has asked other family members not to use the internet

    B.watches several videos from teachers

C.likes to have snacks and drinks

    D.plays with the mobile phone

    3Zhang Penghui thinks that ________.

    A.students' self-discipline is weak

B.a quiet room and clean desk can help students stay focused

C.it's good for students to get different teachers from China

D.the biggest problem about studying online is the poor internet connection

  • 24、   Have you ever run into a careless cell phone user on the street? Perhaps they were busy talking, texting or checking updates on WeChat (微信) without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new “type” of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name — phubbers (低头族).

Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people in their short film. Phubbers with different social identities(身份) lose themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die. A pretty woman takes selfie (自拍) at the scene of a car accident. A father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A series of similar events finally leads to the destruction(毁灭) of the world.

Although the ending sounds overstated(夸大), the harm phubbing can do is real. Your health is the first to face the effect and result of it. “ Bending your head to check your cell phone could be harmful to your neck,” A famous doctor said. “Also, staring at(盯着) cell phones for a long time will damage(损害) your eyesight little by little.”

But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. Many people pay more attention to their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange situation.

It can also cost you your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.

1Why does the author give the example of a cartoon in Para. 2?

A.To advertise the cartoon made by students.

B.To tell us the world will finally be destroyed by phubbers.

C.To inform people of the bad effects of phubbing.

D.To warn doctors against using cell phones while treating patients.

2Which of the following is NOT a risk(危险)a phubber may have?

A.His social skills could be affected.

B.He will cause the destruction of the world.

C.His neck and eyesight will be gradually harmed.

D.He might get separated from his friends and family.

3What may the passage talk about next?

A.Advice on how to use WeChat. B.People addicted to phubbing.

C.Results of phubbing. D.Ways to reduce the risks of phubbing.
