One of the problems career people(上班族) have in the morning is dressing for the office when there will be an evening party immediately followed, with no time to return home to change. The easiest solution is to keep a full set of toiletries (洗漱用品) and make-ups stored somewhere at the office. A woman going to an evening party should dress in one of her “basic dresses” in the morning—the kind that can change into a different look with an added scarf or jewelry. In fifteen minutes, when her office day has ended, she can metamorphose(彻底变化) herself into another person with freshly cleaned teeth, combed hair, a new face, a different and dressier(漂亮的) pair of shoes, and some sparkling jewelry. • 22、Alice Lee is a high school student studying at a private school. She is doing some voluntary work at an afterschool program to help students from poor families.

On the first day of her work, she noticed that many kids were lining up for free sandwiches and fruit in the school cafeteria(餐厅). She was surprised. One of the organizers explains that many of these students don’t get enough to eat at home. So a school lunch or an afterschool meal might be the most food they would get all the day. She has also been told that some hungry kids can receive free lunches, but others are only allowed reduced price meals, and those students’ families have to pay for the part of their food.

Lee was shocked. She decided to offer help to those who are suffering from hunger. “I want other kids to understand that if you see a problem, you don’t have to wait to be an adult to fix it,” says Lee. She and a group of friends are using their programing skill to create an app called Food for Thought, which will allow parents, students, and even kindhearted strangers to donate money to a lunch account(账户) for students in need at a nearby school. To receive financial(经济的) help, a family will need only a letter of recommendation from a school headmaster, and no one else has to know.

“I want to make all the app users feel no shame in using,” says Lee. She hopes to test the app in a school this fall.

【1】What did Alice Lee see on the first day of her voluntary work?

A.Children lining up for free food.

    B.Children buying sandwiches and fruits.

    C.Children learning cooking instructions.

    D.Children doing voluntary work.

    A.All the hungry children.

    B.Kindhearted strangers.

    C.Some poor families.

    D.Primary school students.

【3】What was she doing to help the poor kids?

    A.She taught them for free.

    B.She opened a lunch account.

C.She developed an app to help them.

    D.She offered free food.

【4】What is the main idea of this passage?

A.A local school is providing free food for students.

B.A girl is helping poor kids out of hunger.

C.An app will be tested in a school this fall.

D.A group of good friends are working at a school.

  • 23、   A survey (调查) in the United Kingdom asked people about life after lockdown (封城). The market research and data analytics (分析学) company You Gov asked 4,343 people about life after the lockdown ends. The company said they were surprised by the people's answers. Only nine percent of Britons want life to return to "normal" (正常状态) after the coronavirus (冠状病毒) outbreak is over. This means 91 percent want life to be different to how it was before the pandemic (大流行病) started. Over half of people (54%) said they hoped to change the way they live their lives. Lead researcher Professor Tom MacMillan said: "This data shows there is a real want for change, and for the nation to learn from this crisis (危机)."

Most of the people in the survey said they noticed big changes because of the lockdown. Just over half (51%) have noticed cleaner air outdoors, and 27 percent have seen more wildlife in the past month. This may encourage people to use cars less when the lockdown ends. Maybe more people will work from home. Many people (42%) said they value food more, and 38 percent said they are now cooking by themselves and not buying ready-made meals. Another change could be a stronger sense of community. Over 40 percent of people said they now talk to people who live near them.
