21、Many musicians meet and form (组成) a band because they like to write and play their own music. They may start as a group of high school students and practice their music in someone’s house. Sometimes they may play to passers-by in the street or subway so that they can get some money for themselves or pay for their instruments (乐器).
However, there was one band that started in a different way. It was called the Monkees and was formed in 1965. It began as a TV show. The TV show had planned to find four rock musicians who could act as well as sing. But they could only find one who was good enough. They had to use actors for the other three members of the band.
Since some of these actors could not sing well enough, they had to ask for help from other musicians. So at first, the band just pretended (假装) to sing. Anyway, their performances were excellent and they got lots of fans. Each week on TV, the Monkees would pretend to play and sing songs written by other musicians. After a year or so, they became more serious about their work. They started to play and sing their own songs like a real band. Then they produced (制作) their own records and started touring and playing their own music. In the USA they became even more influential and popular than the Beatles and sold even more records.
However, the band broke up around 1970, but happily they reunited (重聚) in the 1980s. They produced a new record in 1996 to celebrate their time as a band. It was very successful. Today the Monkees are still making music for their millions of fans.

22、Every time we get on a plane, we’re asked to either turn off our phones or change them to the flight mode—it’s for “safety reasons”.
But according to The Conversation website, having to turn our phones off on a plane is “a service issue, not a safety one”.
When we speak on our phones in the air, they can cause interference to the aircraft’s radios. Pilots can hear this interference in their headphones. “It’s the same noise you’ll be familiar with, if you put your mobile too close to a speaker,” the Mirror noted. “This sound does not affect safety, but is annoying for sure.” Though speaking on a phone during a flight isn’t dangerous, it isn’t still a good idea.
When we make or receive a call on the ground, we connect (连接) to a cell tower that deals with all calls within an 80-kilometer radius (范围). As we move from place to place we are “handed on” to different cell towers.
As US scientist Sven Bilen explains, there shouldn’t be too many “handoffs (信号转移)”; people shouldn’t travel faster than cars and phone users should be close to the ground.
However, during the flight, telephone calls cannot meet any of the conditions above. And even worse, our cellphones would stop working.
But now things are beginning to change. If we still can’t speak during a flight, we can use other phone functions (功能). For example, Airbus A330 of Emirates Airline has in-flight WiFi to make passengers send and receive short messages in the air. In the future, as Bilen points out, it may be possible for air travelers to make and receive calls freely.
