The buses in Curitiba (库里蒂巴), a city in south Brazil, carry two million passengers a day—that’s 85% of the city’s population. You buy your ticket before you get on the bus. The price is the same wherever you’re going. No one in the city lives more than 400 meters from a bus stop. People don’t use their cars much in the city, so there’s less pollution.

Japanese bullet trains (子弹头列车) travel at up to 320 kilometers an hour. The 520-kilometer journey between Tokyo and Osaka (大阪), the world’s busiest high-speed line, takes just three and a half hours. It would take seven hours by car. Bullet trains are used by many local people. • 23、About ten years ago when I was an undergraduate in college in New York, I was working as a practice student at my university's Museum of Natural History. One day while I was working at the cash register in the gift shop, I saw an elderly couple come in with a little girl in a wheelchair.

As I looked closer at this girl, I saw that she was seated on her chair. I then realized she had no arms or legs, just a head, neck and the trunk of the human body. She was wearing a little white dress with the patterns of red roses and yellow dots.

As the couple wheeled her up to me I was looking down at the register. I turned my head toward the girl and gave her a wink(眨眼示意). As I took the money from her grandparents, I looked back at the girl, who was giving me the most beautiful, largest smile I have ever seen.

All of a sudden her handicap was gone and all I saw was this beautiful girl, whose smile just melted me and almost instantly gave me a completely new sense of what life is all about. I immediately felt full of hope and confidence. She took me, a poor, unhappy college student, into her world, a world of smiles, love and warmth.

That was ten years ago, but I still remember it clearly as if it happened just yesterday. I'm a successful business person now and whenever I get down and think about the troubles of the world, I think about that little girl and the remarkable lesson about life that she taught me.

  • 24、   Thanksgiving Day was near. A first grade teacher gave her class a fun task——to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful.

Most of the students didn’t come from rich families, but many would still celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional customs(习俗). These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of the students’ art. And they were, for the most part.

But one student named Douglas drew a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was often sad. While other children would play with each other during break time, he would stand closely by his teacher's side. There was pain behind his sad eyes. But what was it? One could only guess.

Yes, his picture was different. He drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an empty hand.

Other children started to guess whose hand it could be. One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raise turkeys. Another suggested a police officer, because police keep people safe. And so the discussion went on.

Finally the teacher walked over to Douglas'desk, bent down and asked him whose hand it was.

The little boy looked away and said, “It’s yours, teacher.”

She recalled(回想起) the times when she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there, and times when shed said things like “Take my hand Douglas, we’ll go outside” or “Let me show you how to hold your pencil.”

Douglas was most thankful for his teacher's hand.

1The teacher started this task to____________

A.see which students were from rich families.

B.help students remember to be thankful.

C.find out which students were good at drawing.

D.show that some traditions are out of date.

2What do we know about the boy____________.

A.Nobody wanted to be his friend B.The teacher didn't let him play

C.There were problems with his eyes D.Nobody knew why he was sad

    3What did the boy draw?

A.A turkey B.A farmer C.A police officer D.An empty hand

4With his picture, the boy tried to____________

A.show that he had a talent for drawing B.show that he liked Thanksgiving

C.express his thanks for his teacher D.help the teacher set up a discussion
