  • 23、   For people, it's not surprising that we can open a door, lift a heavy box and control ourselves while walking in the snow. But can a robot do this? Well, Google's new robot, Atlas, can not only do these things, but it can also stand up if it falls down. Although the robot may be slow and clumsy, it was created mainly to work in dangerous places for humans.

Now, robots are much smarter than you might imagine. On March 9 this year, AlphaGo, an artificial intelligence (AI, 人工智能) program made by Google's DeepMind, challenged top professional Go player Lee Sedol from South Korea. And AlphaGo beat Lee at last.

AI is when computers or computer software is able to have intelligent behavior, such as thinking or acting like a human. In our daily lives, we already use AI in many ways, like Apple's Siri and search engines like Baidu and Google.

Some people may worry whether computers are now smart enough to beat us at everything. But experts say that is not the case. Real life problems can be more difficult than the Go game. For example, humans can watch a person throw down a cup of coffee and know that the result will be a mess on the floor. A computer program would have to know the size of the cup, the height of the cup from the floor and many other things to find out the result. But we never know what will happen in the future.

1The underlined word “clumsy” in the first paragraph means ________.

    A. 敏捷的 B. 结实的 C. 笨拙的 D. 呆傻的

2Atlas was created mainly to ________.

    A. help the disabled people B. show the development of technology

    C. help people do simple jobs D. work in dangerous places for humans

3In Paragraph 2, the writer mentioned the game between AlphaGo and Lee Sedol to ________.

    A. explain how smart robots are B. introduce the development of robots

    C. show the game was very exciting D. tell us how robots beat humans in the game

4The underlined word “that” in Paragraph 4 refers to “________”.

    A. AI is already used in many ways B. AI can think and act like a human

    C. AlphaGo beat Lee Sedol in the Go game D. Computers can beat humans at everything

    5From the passage, we can infer(推断) ________.

    A. humans will have to follow robots' orders

    B. it's difficult for robots to take human's place

    C. robots will be just as common as mobile phones

    D. people will depend on their robots to do all the things

  • 24、Many musicians meet and form (组成) a band because they like to write and play their own music. They may start as a group of high school students and practice their music in someone’s house. Sometimes they may play to passers-by in the street or subway so that they can get some money for themselves or pay for their instruments (乐器).

However, there was one band that started in a different way. It was called the Monkees and was formed in 1965. It began as a TV show. The TV show had planned to find four rock musicians who could act as well as sing. But they could only find one who was good enough. They had to use actors for the other three members of the band.

Since some of these actors could not sing well enough, they had to ask for help from other musicians. So at first, the band just pretended (假装) to sing. Anyway, their performances were excellent and they got lots of fans. Each week on TV, the Monkees would pretend to play and sing songs written by other musicians. After a year or so, they became more serious about their work. They started to play and sing their own songs like a real band. Then they produced (制作) their own records and started touring and playing their own music. In the USA they became even more influential and popular than the Beatles and sold even more records.

However, the band broke up around 1970, but happily they reunited (重聚) in the 1980s. They produced a new record in 1996 to celebrate their time as a band. It was very successful. Today the Monkees are still making music for their millions of fans.
