21、 Volunteering means spending some of your free time helping others. You may volunteer to help other people, such as the families who lost their homes after a natural disaster. And you can also volunteer to protect animals, the environment, or any other things that you care about.
●Help yourself by helping others.
Volunteering helps others, but it can also help you. If you’re upset about something, volunteering can be a great way to cope (应付) with your feelings. Lots of people find that they really enjoy volunteering. Volunteer experiences often put you in a different environment that you wouldn’t have met in your life.
●Get started
School is a good place to start if you’re looking for volunteer ideas. Ask a teacher for ideas. Some places want volunteers who are 12 or even older, depending on the job. Often kids start volunteering by working alongside their parents.
●Do things with parents or family members.
Volunteering is a great way to have fun with your family. Talk to your parents, brothers, or sisters and see what they might be interested in doing. Find something you all agree on.
●Invent your own opportunity
Kids can also come up with their own ways to raise money or provide needed services. Here are some ideas: 1. Make and sell products and give the money to the charity. 2. Collect or earn money for charities. 3. Start your own charity group.
Some schools now need kids to help others. Why? Because grown-ups hope kids will become caring people who see the value of giving of their time, talents, and things (like money, toys, or clothes). Volunteering gives kids a taste of responsibility because people are depending on them for something important.
Volunteering can also help kids learn important things about themselves-like what kinds of things they’re best at and enjoy the most. A volunteer job can even help some kids decide what they want to do when they grow up. So what are you waiting for? Make a plan to start volunteering today!

22、
Lisa has been to Antarctica (南极洲). Here is what she wrote about the trip.
Tuesday December 2 We planned to go to Rothera (罗瑟拉站) that morning. We would stay there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on the earth, sometimes you can’t fly at all. We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we’d be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather. It turned clear at 9:30 and we took off at 10:30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn’t be able to fly. |
Wednesday December 3 After waking up in Antarctica for the first time, I can understand why everybody who comes here loves the place. It is really beautiful. We are staying at Rothera Survey Base (基地) with mountains of ice all around. It’s about minus 2℃ today. It is very cold, but the regulars ( 正 式 队 员 ) here are often seen walking around in T-shirts. |
Thursday December 4 I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here. It’s a bit colder today, about minus 5℃, but it’s not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the base have to do a special training course (课程) before we are allowed to go off the base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill. |
Saturday December 6 Not a cloud in the sky and it’s warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket). The most wonderful thing about this place is how the scenery (风景) changes every day. At first I thought I was going mad (疯了). I’d step outside in the morning and think, “I’m sure that big mountain of ice wasn’t there every day.” It’s because the sea ice is always moving —slowly and thankfully. |

23、How to say hello in Japanese depends on (取决于) when you say it. This is very much like different greetings in English at different times of the day or night. In Japanese culture, it also depends on whether (是否) you are on the phone or you are close to the person you are greeting. We don’t get formal (正式) with our friends. We seldom greet them with “Good morning” or “Good evening”. A “Hi” is enough.
The most popular and most well-known translation for “Hello” is still “Konnichiwa”, but it is not exactly how to say hello in Japanese. Perhaps it is not the most suitable (适当的) word for it. In fact, the correct greeting in English for “Konnichiwa” is “Good day” or “Good noon”, and I am sure you wouldn’t like greeting people with a “Good day” at any time, and Japanese also don’t like to say “Konnichiwa” when they want to say “Hello”.
Then what should we do? Let’s do it the way the Japanese do. Use “Ohaiyo Gonzaimasu” when it’s noon and “Konbanwa” to greet somebody in the afternoon. Things are different when you are on the phone. Just say “Moshi, Moshi”, which is actually similar (相似) to saying “Hello” over the phone, because one doesn’t often use “Good morning” or “Good afternoon” or “Good evening” right after picking up the phone. One invariably uses the sweet old “Hello”.
Next time, I’ll tell you something about my life in Japan.
【1】How do Japanese people greet each other in the afternoon?
