二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Facebook has been actively working on virtual reality to build a VR “Metaverse” focused on online work. It recently launched a free version of Horizon Workrooms for the public to download and use. Horizon Workrooms is a VR tool that provides teams with a virtual space across VR and the web to connect and work together. It is meant to provide an immersive (沉浸式的) experience for teams working remotely.

Users will have to purchase the company’s headsets and download the Workrooms app on their devices. Then they should follow the instructions to set up an account. Once the user registration is complete, users from the team can sign up and create a new Workrooms team. They can also invite colleagues to their existing team. Then users can experience VR-powered meetings and connect with teammates in the same virtual room.

Every meeting room in Workrooms comes with multiple functions. You can capture notes, share links and files, and chat with your team while you’re in a meeting. The web platform allows users to schedule and share meetings while being able to store data with ease.

The Workrooms will not use the work conversations or the materials used during meetings to make profit. Facebook also makes it clear that the company and even the third-party apps connected with Workrooms will not be given access to the data used in the meetings.

Virtual reality possesses the ability to transform the way we work. Its ability to allow for better cooperation while bridging the gaps between the regular office setups and the remote working culture could revamp the digital cooperation setups as we know them today.

    A.How to benefit from Workrooms.

B.How to create a Workrooms team.

C.How to get started with Workrooms.

D.How to set up a Workrooms account.

【3】What can we infer about Workrooms?

A.It has access to the data used in meetings.

B.It is built with safety and privacy in mind.

C.It offers the headsets to users free of charge.

D.It makes profit from connecting with other apps.

  • 22、Reversal—change your perspective and solve your problem

It’s often your definition of a problem that limits you in finding a suitable solution. Creative solutions require a change of perspective. 【1】

The reversal technique is a creative thinking technique that is based on the thought that to change your perspective, you sometimes need to change the order of the words in your problem definition.

How you change the order of the words doesn’t matter much, as long as the key words are reversed. 【2】Your challenge is “How do we make sure that fewer people take cars to their work?”. Swapping the key words, you could rephrase this challenge as “How do we make sure that fewer cars take people to their work?”  In this case, the first statement will make you think of alternative means of transportation, like trains or bikes, while the second statement will probably make you think of solutions like carpooling—fewer cars for the same number of people.

Not every problem statement is suitable for a reversal. Sometimes using this technique requires you to first rephrase the question altogether. 【3】For instance, the question “how might we sell more washing machines?” is not easily reversed—there is no key word to swap with “washing machines”. Yet, when you rephrase the question to “How might we sell more washing machines to young parents?” you can easily change it to “How might we sell more young parents to washing machines? 【4】 You could interpret this last sentence as “the washing machine pays the young parents to try it out”. Then, you could start communicating to potential buyers how much they will save each year when they choose your energy efficient washing machine.

As this example shows, some reversals will require a very flexible way of thinking. 【5】 However, thinking about the tiny amount of time it will “cost” you to try out a reversal, you have very little to lose and, potentially, lots to gain.

A.The second problem statement is much more logical.

B.Often it helps to add one more key word to the sentence.

C.Rephrasing your challenge is to change the problem statement.

D.A great way to do this is by “reversing” your problem statement.

E.For instance, imagine you are responsible for limiting the traffic jam in your area.

F.Admittedly, it is a very unusual challenge, but it might just stimulate a creative thought.

G.Not everyone will be able to move from an unreasonable statement to a useful solution.

  • 23、Mrs. Packletide intended to shoot a tiger. Not that the desire to kill had suddenly come to her, or that she felt she would leave India safer with one wild beast less. It was because Loona Bimberton had recently taken a plane to the forest and killed a tiger, and the newspapers showed photographs of Loona Bimberton with a tiger-skin on. In a world supposed to be moved by hunger and by love, Mrs. Packletide’s movements were largely governed by dislike of Loona Bimberton.

Circumstances proved favorable. Mrs. Packletide had offered a thousand rupees (印度卢比) for the opportunity of shooting a tiger without risk or effort, and it happened that an old tiger was frequently coming to a neighboring village at night. He was so old that he couldn’t kill animals in the wild and just satisfied his appetite to the smaller household animals. The villagers were eager to earn the thousand rupees; children were posted night and day in the jungle to watch the tiger, and the cheap goats were left about to keep him from going elsewhere. The one great fear was that he should die of old age before the day of Mrs. Packletide’s shoot.

The great night arrived. A platform had been built in a tree, on which sat Mrs. Packletide and her paid companion, Miss Mebbin. A goat with a loud bleat (咩咩叫) was tied down at the correct distance. With an accurate gun, they waited for the coming of the tiger.

“I suppose we are in some danger?” said Miss Mebbin.

She was not actually nervous about the wild beast, but she was unwilling to perform a bit more service than she had been paid for.

“It’s a very old tiger. It couldn’t spring up here even if it wanted to.” said Mrs. Packletide.

Their conversation was cut short by the appearance of the old tiger. He saw the goat, and lay on the earth for a short rest before attacking.

The gun fired very loudly, and the great yellow beast jumped to one side and then rolled over in the stillness of death. In a moment a crowd of excited villagers appeared on the scene, and their shouting carried the glad news to the village.

It was Miss Mebbin who found that the goat was dying from a bullet-wound, while no wound could be found on the tiger. Evidently the wrong animal had been hit, and the tiger had died of heart-failure, caused by the sudden loud noise of the gun. Mrs. Packletide was annoyed at the discovery; but anyway, she owned a dead tiger, and the villagers, anxious for their thousand rupees, gladly accepted the fiction that she had shot the tiger. And Miss Mebbin was a paid companion. Therefore Mrs. Packletide faced the cameras with a light heart, and her pictures appeared on the newspapers of England and America. As for Loona Bimberton, she refused to look at a newspaper for weeks, and was in a depressed emotion for quite some time.

Mrs. Packletide’s tiger-skin was inspected and admired by the neighbors, and Mrs. Packletide went to the Costume Ball in the character of Diana (狩猎女神).

“How amused everyone would be if they knew what really happened,” said Miss Mebbin a few days after the ball.

“What do you mean?” asked Mrs. Packletide quickly.

“How you shot the goat and frightened the tiger to death,” said Miss Mebbin, with her unpleasant laugh.

“No one would believe it,” said Mrs. Packletide, her face changing color rapidly.

“Loona Bimberton would,” said Miss Mebbin.

Mrs. Packletide’s face settled on greenish white. “You surely wouldn’t give me away?” she asked.

“I’ve seen a weekend cottage near Dorking,” said Miss Mebbin, “six hundred and eighty. Quite a bargain, only I don’t happen to have the money.”

Miss Mebbin possessed the pretty weekend cottage. Mrs. Packletide lost interest in animal-hunting.

“The extra expenses are so heavy,” she said to inquiring friends.

【1】Mrs. Packletide planned to shoot a tiger because she ________.

    A. would leave India safer

    B. hated the wild animal

    C. admired her good friend

    D. disliked a certain person

【2】What did Mrs. Packletide want the villagers to arrange for her?

    A. A platform in a tree.    B. A paid companion.

    C. An accurate gun.      D. A safe shooting.

【3】What was the result of Mrs. Packletide’s shooting?

    A. The old tiger was shot to death.

    B. Neither the tiger nor the goat was shot.

    C. The old tiger missed being shot.

    D. Both the goat and the tiger were shot.

【4】What is the message conveyed in the story?

    A. Life is hard for one to predict.

    B. Everything comes for a reason.

    C. It’s unwise to keep bad company.

    D. False pride costs more than expected.

  • 24、As spring advances across the Midwest, a new study looking at blooming (盛开的) flowers suggests non-native plants might live longer than native plants due to climate change.

The study — led by researchers at Indiana University and Michigan State University — has shown warming temperatures affect native and non-native flowering plants differently, which could change the look of local landscapes (风景) over time. “When a plant flowers determines whether it will be pollinated (授粉) by bees or other insects and how much time it will have to produce seeds. Our data makes me worry that we will have a very weedy (杂草丛生的) world in our future.” said the study’s lead author Jen Lau, an associate professor in Indiana University.

The researchers’ findings suggest non-native plants may be better at shifting their flowering time compared to native plants. These differences are thought to influence a plant’s success both now and in future warmer environments.

Lau and her students simulated (模拟) global warming in fields planted with 45 native and non-native plants. Some areas were warmed by infrared (红外线的) heaters, while other areas were not. Lau’s lab surveyed all plants to determine when they first flowered and how long they flowered.

When plants were grown in warmed plots simulating the climate change expected in the Midwest by the end of the century, the researchers found that non-native plants flowered more than 11 days earlier on average. In contrast, native plants didn’t change flowering times at all when warmed.

They also found earlier-flowering non-native plants had greater geographic spread, suggesting that flowering earlier may help promote successful occupation across large areas.

The findings suggest important differences in how native and non-native plants respond to climate change.

【1】What does the new study find about native plants compared with non-native?

A.They have a longer life cycle.

B.They are likely to have more flowers.

C.They are more adaptable to climate change.

D.They may be at greater risk from climate change.

【2】What do Jen Lau’s words in paragraph 2 suggest?

A.She’s quite sure that a weedy world is waiting for us.

B.Plants may lose the ability to flower in the future.

C.The timing of a plant’s flowering is key to its life cycle.

D.A plant’s flowering time almost has no effect on its pollination.

【3】What does the underlined word “shifting” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Changing.

    B.Postponing.

    C.Arranging.

    D.Predicting.

【4】What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.How global warming affected plant species

B.How the researchers tested their supposition.

C.How to keep the warmth of the planted fields.

D.How to determine the flowering times of plants.
