二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、How are you feeling today? Often when we ask people that question, they reply ‘not bad’, or ‘could be worse’. But what would make us feel ‘perfect’? Maybe we could live better by being healthier, less stressed, more motivated—but how?

Of course there are many ways of improving our mental health, but sometimes there are small and simple solutions to helping improve our wellbeing. It’s something the TV programme Easy Ways to Live Well has been looking at. It suggested several ‘health hacks’ which the programme’s presenters tried and gave their ‘seal of approval’. And maybe they could help us too.

Firstly, to deal with putting on weight and to cut the calories, the programme found sniffing (嗅) peppermint (薄荷) stops our longing for a snack. Presenter, chef and writer Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall says “a scientific theory called ‘mutual competition’ shows that a strong smell can distract our brain from the food we’re thinking about.”

If your addiction to your smartphone is getting you down, it’s suggested that turning your phone screen grey helps you reduce screen time because a black and white screen becomes less attractive to look at. With recent studies showing our phones can make us 26% less productive and increase our stress, it seems like a no-brainer to try this ‘dim’ idea.

Fancy a swim in ice-cold water? Well, the TV programme found a daily dip in freezing water gets you used to the stress of doing it and therefore prepares you for other life stresses. And another way to ‘chill out’ is to leave your smartphone at home, immerse yourself in a forest, and breathe in the fresh air. Forest bathing is the perfect tonic for the stresses of urban life.

Other life-improving ideas included things such as singing to reduce pain and walking around more to get away from our sedentary (久坐不动) lives. But whatever way we choose to adopt, it seems any change to our lifestyle can help improve our body and mind.

A.The strong smell of peppermint is bound to cut the calories.

  • 22、As weather cools across the United States, a growing number of Americans visit farms. They harvest fruits, enjoy hay wagon rides and walk in the fields. These people are called “agri-tourists.” They improve the economy of rural areas and help farmers increase their profits.

School children are walking in a corn field maze. The corn is cut into tricky passageways that make it difficult to find a way out. The children are from Yorktown Elementary School in Bowie Maryland. They have traveled to Montpelier Farms in Prince George’s County which is also in Maryland. The farm is about 40 kilometers from The White House.

Debbie Pierson is the student’s teacher. “We go on these kind of field trips so that the children will have a hands-on experience of what it’s like to be on a farm,” Pierson said.

In Loudoun County Virginia, there are farms where grapes are grown for use in making wine. Many of the farms let people visit, and drink the wine that is made there. Bill Hatch owns the Zephaniah Farm Vineyard. He holds wine tastings in his home. “We are doubling the number of visitors to our farm every year. We have an average of 250 people on a weekend,” Hatch said.

As more people visit farms, more farmers are adding activities in which visitors can take part.

Malcolm Baldwin owns WeatherLea Farm and Vineyard in Loudoun County. Six years ago, he began letting people be married at his farm. They can also sleep at the farm overnight. Mr. Baldwin says the money he makes from these activities let him keep his small farm operating. “But without the animals, and without the vines, the wedding business wouldn’t be as profitable (有利可图的), because people like to see the vines. They like to see the animals and without which I don’t think this will be a popular place,” Baldwin said.

【1】We can infer from the first paragraph that people always go for field trips in _______.

    A. Spring B. Summer C. Autumn  D. Winter

【2】The underlined word maze in the passage is similar to _______.

    A. puzzle B. trip C. house D. activity

【3】 On Malcolm Baldwin’s farms, visitors can ________.

    A. taste the wine made in the USA

    B. raise and hunt animals

    C. do wedding business

    D. have fun as well as bring him money

  • 23、阅读理解

I wasn’t surprised when I read that actress Helen Hunt recently stated that she would never allow her young daughter to become a child star. Ms Hunt is the daughter of a Hollywood technical director, and grew up in Hollywood. Now in her late 40s, she started acting and modeling when she was eight and has probably seen a lot over those years in show business.

She has had a successful career. She earned four Golden Globes and four Emmys. She also attained the top honor of her profession when she won the Best Actress Academy Award for her role in the 1992 movie, As Good As It Gets. Given those accolades, Ms Hunt is successful. There is no doubt that her early experiences as a child star prepared her for what has been an outstanding adult career. Given those achievements, why would this star declare she’ll never allow her daughter, now at the age of six, to follow in her footsteps?

Everyone familiar with the entertainment scene is aware of the reasons for her attitude. Recent tabloid (小报) news headlines featuring the troubles of former child stars, among them Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and the late Gary Coleman, may answer the question. Although Ms Hunt managed to become a successful grown-up star, she apparently believes she’s an exception.

What Ms Hunt may be suggesting is that many very young stars go through unnatural childhoods on movie and TV sets. While they’re earning big incomes, they’re so pampered (纵容) by directors and praised by fans; they may get false impressions that their lives will always be that way. Then, within a few years, when faced with reality, they’re hurt and confused. After all the overwhelming affection, they find they can’t deal with the problems. That’s often when drugs and alcohol take over their lives.

Helen Hunt has some other reasons why she doesn’t want her daughter to be in the entertainment business. Many child stars can never make a successful transition to meaningful adulthood. However, as with many Hollywood movies, I believe there are both good and bad scenes about how it can be played out in real life.

【1】 According to the passage, Ms Hunt _________.

    A. started acting and modeling when she was a little girl

    B. has been acting for about 30 years

    C. is the daughter of a famous actor

    D. started singing when she was eight

【2】 The underlined word “accolades” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_________”.

    A. difficulties    B. awards

    C. salaries   D. opinions

【3】 The author thinks Helen Hunt’s success is mainly due to _________.

    A. her hard work

    B. the help of a technical director

    C. her experiences as a child star

    D. her talent and good luck

  • 24、   A 10-year-old swimmer with sky-high dreams and a name to match them has broken a record previously held by Olympian Michael Phelps.

Clark Kent Apuada, whose friends call him “Superman”, swam the 100-meter butterfly in 1: 09. 38 at the Far Western Long Course Championships in his home state of California this Sunday. That’s a second faster than the record Phelps set at the same event in 1995 with a time of 1: 10. 48 in the same category of boys under 10.

Clark, a rising fifth-grader who is Filipino-American, told HuffPost he’s been dreaming about breaking Phelps’ record ever since he started swimming competitively at age 7. “I was so motivated,” Clark said about his win. “I was so happy that I was able to beat that record.”

Phelps competed in his first Olympics at age 15. He went on to become the most decorated Olympian in history, with 28 medals overall. “Everyone in the crowd was excited when they realized what a special swim they had just seen when we announced the long-standing record had been broken,” Cindy Rowland, Pacific Swimming’s director, wrote in an email.

Clark won first place for all the swimming events he competed in at this year’s Far Western Championships. Pacific Swimming or PacSwim, a regional association that is part of USA Swimming, organizes the Far Western Long Course Championships. Cynthia Apuada, Clark's mother, said that her child seems to be “living by his name at this point”.

Asked about the champion swimmer’s unusual name, she said she’d always loved the name Clark. And her husband’s favorite superhero just happened to be Superman. So when their child was born, they decided to give him the name “Clark Kent”. The nickname “Superman” appeared naturally.

1What can be learned about Clark Kent Apuada?

A.He is in grade four now. B.He is a native American.

C.He broke Phelps’ record at age 7. D.He dreams big and is promising.

2Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “decorated” in Paragraph 4?

    A.Being popular. B.Being respected.

C.Being awarded medals. D.Being talked about most.

3How did Clark get the name “Clark Kent”?

A.Clark Kent is his family name. B.He lived by his name at that point.

C.His father named him after his superhero. D.His father knew he would be excellent.

4What can be the best title of the text?

A.A 10-Year-Old Beats Michael Phelps’ Old Swimming Record

    B.A 10-Year-Old Swimmer with Sky-high Dreams

C.Phelps and His Amazing Swimming Record

D.Clark Kent — the Greatest Athlete of All Time
