  • 22、Throughout the world, clothing has many uses. It is used to provide protection from cold. It is also worn to prevent others from seeing specific parts of one’s body. However, the parts of the body that must be covered vary widely throughout the world. Some clothing is worn to provide supernatural protection.

People in all cultures use clothing and other forms of bodily decoration to communicate status, intentions and other messages. In North America, we dress differently for business and various leisure activities. North American women usually are much more knowledgeable of little difference in messages communicated by clothes than men. At times, this leads to silly mistakes of understanding of female intentions on the part of men. Of course, clothing styles also are intended to communicate messages to members of the same gender.

Long before we are near enough to talk to someone, their appearance tells their gender, age, economic class, and often even intentions. We begin to recognize the important cultural clues at an early age. The vocabulary of dress that we learn includes not only items of clothing but also hairstyles, jewelry, and other body decoration. In most cultures, however, the same style of dress communicates different messages depending on the age, gender, and physical appearance of the individual wearing it.

Putting on certain types of clothing can change your behavior and the behavior of others towards you. This can be the case with a doctor’s white lab coat, or an army uniform. Most uniforms are clearly symbolic so that they can rapidly and unmistakably communicate status. For instance, the strange hairstyle and clothing of the English “punks” are essential aspects of their uniforms.

    A. To hide their fear for the exam.

    B. To provide protection against bad weather.

    C. To make them more comfortable.

    D. To call for supernatural help.

【3】According to the passage, what can change others’ behavior towards you?

    A. Age.   B. Dress.   C. Status.   D. Gender.

【4】What can we learn from the passage?

    A. Clothing plays an important role in social activities.

    B. Words of dress are unable to communicate different messages.

    C. Dress is better than language in communicating messages.

    D. Messages communicated by clothes are the same in different cultures.

  • 23、   COURTESY PAUL BOZYMOWSKI-Three New York City police officers paid for a woman’s groceries rather than arresting her.

As temperatures approached 90 degrees in New York City last July 4th, three police officers ducked into a Whole Foods Market to get something cold to drink. What they walked into was a heated human drama.

Once inside, the cops, Lt. Louis Sojo and Officers Esanidy Cuevas and Michael Rivera, were approached by a store security guard who asked for help with a suspected shoplifter. The woman in question didn’t have the look of a career criminal. She was obviously scared, and her cheeks were wet with tears.

The cops peeked inside her bag. “All we saw was containers of food.” Cuevas told CBS New York.

    "I’m hungry," she explained quietly.

Caught red-handed, the woman no doubt expected to be sentenced to jail for the crime of being hungry while poor. But the cops had other ideas. “We’ll pay for her food,” Sojo told the surprised security guard.

There’d been no discussion among the three men. It went unsaid. Instead, they picked up the woman’s bag and accompanied her to a cash register, where each took out $10 to pay the tab. She would not be arrested today.

All the woman could do was weep in gratitude. Covering her face with a kerchief and drying her eyes, she repeated, “Thank you, thank you.”

She wasn’t the only one touched by this act of mercy. “It was a very beautiful, genuine moment,” says Paul Bozymowski, who was at the store. He was so taken by what he’d witnessed that he posted a photo on Twitter for all to see.

But attention was never what the officers sought. They were driven by a far more common emotion. As Sojo told CNN, “When you look at someone’s face and see that they need you and they’re actually hungry, it’s pretty difficult as a human being to walk away from something like this.”

1What can be learnt about the woman from the passage?

A.She had stolen in the shop several times before.

B.She was caught on the spot by three police officers.

C.She was found innocent and would not be arrested.

D.She was forced to commit the crime due to the dilemma of life.

2Paul Bozymowski posted a photo on Twitter to   .

A.appeal for sympathy for the people in need B.express his gratitude to the police officers

C.show more people the cops’ act of kindness D.record the unforgettable moment in his life

3What drove the three police officers to pay for the woman?

A.Their great devotion to work B.A deep sense of being human

C.The attraction of the public attention D.Their different attitude towards shoplifting

  • 24、In 2012, the Tower of London welcomed two new inhabitants: a pair of ravens(乌鸦) named Jubilee and Grip. Their arrival celebrated the bicentenary(二百周年) of Charles Dickens’s birth. This Grip was the third of the Tower ravens to be named after the novelist’s own pet birD. One of his predecessors(前辈) was resident during World War Two; he and his mate Mabel were the only ravens to survive a bombing attack on the Tower.

Dickens’s Grip, who had an impressive vocabulary, appears as a character in the author’s fifth novel, Barnaby Rudge. On 28 January 1841, Dickens wrote to his friend George Cattermole: “my notion is to have [Barnaby] always in company with a pet raven, who is immeasurably more knowing than himself. To this end I have been studying my bird, and think I could make a very distinctive character of him.”

Unfortunately, just a few weeks after Dickens wrote that letter, Grip died, probably as a result of having stolen and eaten paint some months earlier. The bird had developed a strange habit tearing sections off painted surfaces (including the family's carriage) and even drinking a quantity of white paint out of a tin. Dickens mourned his loss and wrote a humorous letter to his friend, the illustrator Daniel Maclise, about the raven’s death.

He related how, when Grip began to show signs of sickness, the vet was called and “administered a powerful dose of castor(蓖麻) oil”. Initially this seemed to have a positive effect and the author was thrilled to see Grip restored to his usual personality when he bit the coachman (who was used to the raven and took it in good humor). The following morning, Grip was able to eat “some warm porridge”, but his recovery was short liveD.

As Dickens wrote to Maclise, “On the clock striking twelve he appeared slightly upset, but soon recovered, walking twice or thrice along the coach-house, stopped to bark, exclaimed ‘Hello old girl’ (his favorite expression) and dieD. He behaved throughout with a decent manner, which cannot be too much admireD. .. The children seem rather glad of it. He bit their ankles. But that was play.”

【1】Which of the following is right about Dickens’s pet Grip?

    A. he liked painting a lot.

    B. he could speak English fluently.

    C. he was quite ill before his death.

    D. he and Mabel survived a bombing attack.

【2】Why did Dickens study his bird Grip?

    A. Because the bird was very strange looking.

    B. Because Dickens liked the bird immeasurably.

    C. Because Barnaby needs a companion who was always with him.

    D. Because Dickens wanted to base one character of his novel on him.

【3】What caused the death of Dickens’s Grip?

    A. His old age.

    B. His strange diet.

    C. The killing of the coachman.

    D. His bad habit of biting people.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

    A. A bird in a novel.

    B. The writer’s birD.

    C. The death of a birD.

    D. Dickens and his bird
