21、Here is an astonishing and significant fact: Mental work alone can’t make us tired. It sounds absurd. But a years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲劳). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins(毒素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?
Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional(情绪的) attitudes. One of England’s most outstanding scientists, J.A. Hadfield, says, “The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares, “One hundred percent of the fatigue of sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired Joy Satisfaction No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated---those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.
【1】What surprised the scientists a few years ago?
A. Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer’s blood.
B. The brain could work for many hours without fatigue.
C. Albert Einstein didn’t feel worn after a day’s work.
D. A mental worker’s blood was filled with fatigue toxins.
【2】 According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired?
A. Challenging mental work. B. Endless tasks.
C. Physical labor. D. Unpleasant emotions.
【3】 Which of the following is properly used to describe the author’s attitude to the scientists’ idea?
A. He hesitates to accept them. B. He doubts them.
C. He argues against them. D. He agrees with them.
【4】 It is implied in the passage that in order to stay energetic, sitting workers need to ___________.
A. enjoy their work B. have some good food.
C. exercise regularly D. discover fatigue toxins
22、Criminals who try to pass off fake art as the real deal should be careful now. A new identification method could make recognizing fakes much easier. The technique allows scientists to tag paintings and other artworks with tiny pieces of DNA, which act like a signature. If an artwork missed the tag, people would immediately know it was an illegal copy.
DNA is normally found inside the cells of all living things. However, researchers at the State University of New York at Albany, who developed the tagging technique, have created DNA in a lab, whose code is just as unique as that of DNA found in nature.
The scientists would apply the engineered DNA to a small tag and place it on an artwork. Over time, the DNA in the tag would bond with the art at a molecular(分子的) level. That way, even if the tag is removed, the DNA remains. Possible buyers and sellers can use a scanner to read a DNA tag or, if the tag is missing, swab(擦拭) the artwork to test for DNA inside. Then they check the molecular marker against a database of artists to make sure the work is real.
Some famous artists have already agreed to try this high-tech way to sign their art. That’s because fakes are huge problems in the art world. It’s said that as many as two out of every five artworks sold these days are fakes. Some seem so convincing that experts are needed to prove whether they’re real or not.
Although a painting may be perfectly copied, it would be nearly impossible to copy a DNA tag. Applying the tag doesn’t harm the work itself. Even better, they each cost only about $150—an inexpensive price for a technology that could save museums, art galleries, and private collectors billions.
【1】What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. How the DNA tag works. B. How the DNA tag is made.
C. What a database is used for. D. What can be done if the DNA tag is lost.
【2】Which of the following is NOT the advantage of the DNA tag?
A. It is affordable. B. It can hardly be copied.

23、I left England for Sydney in September. It was a career move for my husband, and our 20-year-old daughter was feeling adventurous and decided to come, too. However, just before leaving England, my 79-year-old mother suffered a stroke(中风).Being strong and independent, she continued to live at home with the help of social services. But she couldn’t look after the garden. 1 thought how wonderful it would be if then, was an organisation offering volunteer help. Friends asked me what I planned to do in Australia, and I told them I would he looking for a volunteer position witch a gardening charitable organisation. Imagine my surprise when I found just the organisation I had been looking for——Easy Care Gardening (ECG)!
There are several reason Why I volunteer for ECG. Firstly, as a newcomer to Australia I meet many great people who, like me, volunteer some of their time. We cover a large age range, but all love gardens and helping others.
Secondly, through working with ECG I have been lucky enough to explore Sydney’s North Shore that I might not have had the chance to visit otherwise.
Finally, there are all those wonderful people we call clients (客户) ”,but are more like friends when we visit them often and tend their gardens. What great people I have met, and the stories they have to tell—the family histories, where they come from and the reasons for immigrating to Australia! I find it a privilege to have access to private gardens which, in many cases, have been the joy of their owners for many years. Each one is individual and reflects the character, needs and the history of each family. Indeed, the gardens reflect the multicultural and historical background of Sydney.
