21、 Donald Kennedy would probably be amused by an old friend's tribute(颂词)to him as “very close to being a Renaissance man.”
It's hard to argue with the facts. The 8 years he served as editor-in-chief of Science was only the final chapter in a long and very exceptional career. He spent most of it at Stanford University, including 12 years as its president, interrupted by a 2-year head of the U. S. Food and Drug Administration under former President Jimmy Carter. But the Harvard University-trained neurobiologist wore those and other honors lightly, driven by a greedy curiosity about the world and a wish to help make it a better place.
Kennedy, who died on 21 April of COVID-19 at age 88, enjoyed his role as a scientist, educator, public servant, and communicator, recalls Tom Grumbly, who was his assistant at FDA. "A brilliant, funny, very special person," says Grumbly, who leads a foundation that claims increased support for agricultural research. "He could talk on any level to people about science, without placing himself above them. And he could stand shoulder to shoulder with the best scientists in the world.”
The combination of a towering intellect and a genuine concern for the individual served Kennedy well at Science. "He was a wonderful partner at the American Association for the Advancement of Science(AAAS)," says Alan Leshner, a former longtime chief executive at AAAS, which publishes Science. "He contributed his wisdom about science and public policy to our efforts on behalf of the community.”
As editor from 2000 to 2008, Kennedy led the journal through some high-profile(备受瞩目)controversies and quickly produced editorials(社论)on all matters affecting its readers. And it wasn't his nature to step backward.
In that 2008 editorial, Kennedy offered advice to Alberts, his successor, on editing a scientific journal. But it could also stand as an epitaph(墓志铭)on his long career in the public stage.
"Be as fair as you can, sympathize with anger, confess institutional error when appropriate, and be firm," Kennedy wrote. "And when the disappointed complain to members of the AAAS Board, remember to smile!"

22、I was sitting at my desk when another grade student in my lab approached me to ask my help with his experiment. I was then a fifth year PhD student, the respected senior member of the lab. But that also meant I was the one everyone turned to for help, which cost much time I could have spent on my own research.
There were many reasons I had a hard time saying no to such pleas (恳求). I was new to the United States for graduate school. I found it difficult to make new friends and discover activities I enjoyed, and I feared that if I brushed them off, I’d lose their favor.
I didn’t realize the extra responsibilities came at a cost until my wife gave birth to our first child. I often made sacrifices to my personal life. While she lay in a hospital bed, I sat nearby hunched (伏首前倾的) over my laptop finishing up a work report. Hours later, my daughter’s first cry dawned on me: I should have been fully present during my daughter’s birth. I was clearly spending too much time working.
From then on, I decided to spend more time with my family by paring down my work tasks and carefully considering each request for help. I balanced others’ requests for help and my own tasks. I noticed many benefits: no longer working overtime, more family time, and improved work performance.
It’s hard to say “no” to those you work with. But I’ve learned that sometimes that’s the best course of action to avoid a tall workload and lead a freer and happier life.

24、 One of the easiest ways to stop the spread of disease is to simply wash your hands. Twenty seconds of handwashing with soap and water can reduce illnesses and save lives. But, many people, especially children, do not have good handwashing habits. One problem is that children do not wash their hands often enough or long enough. Children may think that it is a tiresome thing to do.
To help handle this problem, two businesswomen from India created a product to turn handwashing into a fun activity. Amanat Anand and Shubham Issar created a tool called SoaPen, aimed at teaching kids good handwashing habits and encouraging kids to wash their hands with soap appropriately and regularly.
“It's such a simple habit to do, but the fact is that people aren't doing it, and it's resulting in actual deaths-which is shocking. So, we decided to come up with a fun method,” said Issar.
As the name suggests, SoaPen is a pen made out of soap. The children draw on their hands with the soap pen and then wash the drawing off. If they don’t spend enough time washing it off, the colors remain on the children’s hands. Issar said it makes sure that children take enough time to wash their hands. This may be especially helpful in a classroom. Often a teacher does not have the time to make each child wash his hands properly.
Kids actually wash their hands for the proper amount of time because they're drawing on their hands. To obliterate the drawing, they actually wash their hands instead of just going under water and, you know, a one-second wash and off.
Good news is that the school children in Mumbai, India, will soon most likely wash their hands after handling a pet. Issar and Anand stated that SoaPen to be created everywhere will help promote good habits through handwashing in the city across the globe.
【1】Why does SoaPen come into existence?
A.To cure kids of some kinds of diseases.
B.To teach kids the importance of soap.
C.To help kids wash their hands correctly.
D.To make money from children consumers.
【2】Which of the following does Issar agree with?
A.Handwashing is anything but little.
B.SoaPen is designed for classrooms.
C.Some teachers ignore kids’ health in school.
D.Kids don't know the right way of handwashing.
【3】What does “obliterate” underlined in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Show. B.Reserve.
C.Learn D.Remove.
【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.SoaPen has become popular worldwide.
B.The inventors think Soapen has a bright future.
C.SoaPen has been applied in Mumbai schools.
